The console of the organ is from the Oriental Theatre in Boston (Opus 2131, made in 1930). The rest of the organ, including the 16 ranks, were originally installed in the Capitol Theatre, in St. Paul MN, in 1926. Later, it was installed in the KSTP Television Studios, before being moved to the Phipps Center in 1983.

Oskar Boehme Trumpet Concerto
This is the Concerto for virtuoso trumpet by Oskar Boehme (Opus 18), here performed by Melvin Keith Olson on his Mount Vernon Vincent Bach Stradivarius model Bb cornet (c.1962), supported with a vibrant and equally virtuosic accompaniment by Steinway Artist Layton Skip James. This was recorded at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wisconsin..
When Franz Herbst transposed the work from e minor to f minor for modern instruments, a cut was made in the double-tonguing segment at the end of the first movement. We removed this cut to make our performance faithful to the original version. The three movements are the dramatic Allegro moderato, the very emotional Andante religioso, and the final Rondo, Allegro scherzando.

Walsenburg's Wonderful Wuerlitzer
George Birrer, Huerfano youth and Arts Foundation, welcomed a packed house of music afficionados to the re-introduction of Walsenburg's Wonderful Wurlitzer Pipe Organ to the FOX Theatre in Walsenburg, CO. Purchased in 1923 for the then-Start Theatre, the instrument served for a time as a church organ before being restored to its former glory by volunteers from the Pikes Peak Area Theatre Organ Society. Organist Bob Flinn of Colorado City entertained the audience of over 400 with popular show tunes and demonstrated a few of the organ's special musical qualities. The community can look forward to many more years of entertainment from this dear old friend.

What If We Didn't Have States? (feat. Parag Khanna)
States: they're a fact of American geography we take largely for granted. But what’s the value of all those jagged borders? Some experts believe that chopping up our country in a different way would make a lot more sense. So, what if we didn't have states?
So, if we started over today, would we keep the somewhat wacky outlines of our states intact, or would we move to perhaps a more logical system that throws state lines out the window? “America From Scratch” host Toussaint Morrison explores some surprising alternatives with professor David Bateman of Cornell University and Parag Khanna, senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore.

** At 1:02 we say the constitution “included” a process for creating new states. This isn’t completely accurate. The constitution authorized Congress to create such a process—which it later did by federal statute, the Northwest Ordinance of 1789 and others.

A BioBlitz, also written without capitals as bioblitz, is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study over a continuous time period (e.g., usually 24 hours). There is a public component to many BioBlitzes, with the goal of getting the public interested in biodiversity. To encourage more public participation, these BioBlitzes are often held in urban parks or nature reserves close to cities.
