Constructed more than two centuries before Angkor Wat, Phnom Bakheng was in its day the principal temple of the Angkor region, historians believe. It was the architectural centerpiece of a new capital, Yasodharapura, that Yasovarman built when he moved the court from the capital Hariharalaya in the Roluos area located to the southeast. Phnom Bakheng is a temple mountain in honor of the Hindu god Shiva and one of the oldest temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Thanks to its location on a 60-meter high hill, Phnom Bakheng became a very popular tourist spot for its magnificent sunset views over Angkor Wat.
History of Phnom Bakheng
During his reign, King Jasovarman I (889 – 910 CE) moved the capital of his empire from Roluos to the location which is now known as Angkor. Here, he created an enormous city of 16 square kilometers; bigger than Angkor Thom, which was built later. In the center of this city, King Jasovarman built his State Temple on top of a natural hill, known as Phnom Bakheng hill.
Structure and Symbolism
Phnom Bakheng is a pyramid shaped temple consisting of 7 levels, symbolizing the sacred Mount Meru and the 7 Hindu heavens. 108 towers were arranged on the ground and upper levels of the temple, symbolizing the 4 lunar phases of each 27 days long. Unfortunately, most of these towers collapsed. The temple was devoted to the god Shiva and served as a tomb for king Jasovarman I.
Getting There & Around
Phnom Bakheng is located 400 meter south of Angkor Thom. If you’re approaching from Angkor Wat, then Phnom Bakheng hill is to the left side, set back from the road. It’s worth stopping. A sandy path winds up the hill to the foot of the temple. From here, steep and narrow stairs lead you to the top terrace. The view is breathtaking and if you visit at sunset it’s a soothing way to end the day.
Elephant rides (US$ 15) to the foot of the temple are available during sunset as well. However, it’s a good idea to read about elephant tourism and perhaps avoid this particular ‘attraction’. Asian elephants are endangered and are subject to various forms of abuse in order to provide tourist rides.
When to Visit
Given that Phnom Bakheng’s main attraction is its sunset view over Angkor Wat, plan your visit for the late afternoon. Arrive early (4pm) if you want a good spot on the south-east corner. Especially in high season the temple can get crowded. Note that you’ll need a good zoom lens to make a close-up picture of Angkor Wat, which is 1.3km away. Alternatively, there’s a fantastic sunset view over West Baray on the opposite side (north-west corner).
After enjoying the sunset, be careful climbing down Phnom Bakheng temple’s steep steps. A small flashlight will come in handy.

Phnom Bakheng is a hill in the Angkor Archiological Park which has a temple on it and affords a good view of Angkor Wat from the top (in the distance). There are two ways of getting up this hill- by elephant or by walking. The elephants rides also go to Bayon Temple (in Angkor Thom complex) instead of the hill if desired ($20USD).

We have a lot of footage from our first full day in Siem Reap - November 9, 2014 - so we decided to split it up into two videos. This first video feature sunrise at Angkor Wat and sunset at Phnom Bakheng.

We arrived in Siem Reap the night of November 8, 2014. We applied for visas on arrival, which cost USD $30 each. It was a very quick, easy process. Be sure to bring one passport photo to submit as part of your visa application! If you forget to bring one, we heard you can have one taken at the airport for $2.50. By the way, we used US dollars throughout our entire trip. Be sure to take lots of bills in smaller denominations!
We woke up at 4:00 am the next day and took a tuk tuk from our guesthouse to buy our 3-day Angkor Wat passes then on to the entrance of the main Angkor Wat temple. A 3-day pass cost $40. The great thing about the pass is its flexibility. It's valid for seven days, and you can choose which three days during that seven-day period you'd like to use your pass.
We watched the sun rise from the south side of the temple. We didn't realize until after the sunrise that most tourists were crowded on the north side. We had a stunning sunrise view from the south side, so we don't think it's necessary or desirable to crowd in on the north side.
The sunset at Phnom Bakheng was beautiful. But if you're averse to big crowds, then you may want to give the sunset here a skip.

Another temple is Preah Khan. It was constructed in 12th century for King Jayavarman VII. In this area are numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins. Phnom Bakheng is dedicated to Shiva and was built at the 9th century from King Yasovarman. At the end of this slideshow you can see some photographs of the Royal Empire Hotel, my accommodation for two nights with breakfast and much sun at the pool in the afternoon.

Phnom Bakheng tourist destination Visit Cambodia
Phnom Bakheng is the highest temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park, offering the best panoramic views of the whole area which is popular among tourists for a different reason.
Phnom Bakheng is located 1,30 meters (4,265 feet) north of Angkor Wat and 400 meters (1,312 feet) south of Angkor Thom.
Entering and leaving Phnom Bakheng by climbing a long step path with some steps on the east side of the monument (height 67 meters, 220 feet) or anther way by elephant only 20$ from the ground to the top of the hill.
Before you enter there you will see a few children and his father was selling Handmake paint such as Angkor wat, apsara, buddha, elephant, head of ta phrom status, else.
For the price is depend on how the size of picture is it.
If you prefer small size the price is only 15 or 20$ for each , The bigger size is about 80$ each one.
The population of tourist come to visit sunset everyday is increasing rapidly. A long the way to enter the top we can see a large tree covering the road and hear the bird sound which can be reduced your stressful and make you peaceful either.
It is possible to see: the five towers of Angkor Wat in the west, Phnom Krom to the southwest near the Grand Lake, Phnom Bok in the northeast, Phnom Kulen in the east, and the West Baray and this is the reason why many foreigner love to enjoy climbing there.
people who would like to visit there is required to arrive at the spot approximately 3 pm and half because the hill was stocked people about 300 because that temple was extremly damaged.
Those guys are waiting go to the top of temple to see the sunset which is reflected to angkor wat as golden temple.

World monuments funds began working at angkor in 1989.Since the early 1990s,WMF’s activities have allowed dozens of cambodia employees to learn alongside international specialists, who have helps WMF develop and implement appropriate conservation programs.Today, Phnom bakheng structural repair and conservation project is carried out by World Monument Fund’s skilled cambodian staff, with oversight from more experienced cambodia professional and in collaboration with foreign experts. It enables the employment of more than 100 full times worker, most of whom live in the village within angkor archaeological park, highlighting the deep and lasting connection between the community and its heritage .

Siem Reap, the entire city is a cultural heritage of Cambodia.
Angkor ruins, best exemplified by Angkor Wat, represent the brilliant culture of the Khmer from a thousand years ago. However, the ruins of Angkor today are damaged from wartime and robbery that the glorious appearance from the past can no longer be found at the sight. This production covers the ongoing restoration project to reproduce the glory of Angkor ruins from the long past.
The reproduction of the City of Gods
A thousand years ago, the kings of Khmer of Cambodia served gods and also wanted to become divine themselves. For the sake of gods they serve, and to become close to those gods, the Khmer kings built temples. From Jayavarman VII's Bayon temple to Suriyavarman II's Angkor Wat, all of the constructions are magnificent. However, people's greed and selfishness damaged the ruins and erased the glory of the past, and today, nations from around the world stepped up to revive the ruins of Angkor.
An injection for stones, a cure solution for stones?
The Khmers used the building method of laying one stone upon another, without the use of glue or anchor. The collapsed stones from war and robbery damages shattered in pieces, wore out, and lost structures as they were bearing through the long period passed. Seeking the best use of the remaining stones for restoration through a lot of research, professional restorers came up with a solution: 'inject a shot on the stone!'
Angkor is a hydraulic city
A city floating on the water, Angkor. This means that water essentially controls the fate of Angkor ruins. Decreased precipitation and increased number of tourists threaten the safety of Angkor ruins. The direction professionals took to protect the ruins is to follow how ancestors set up the whole system to function. What was the project the Khmers from a thousand years ago established that enabled the city to keep the structural safety of the city?

In the past, Angkor ruins' biggest threats used to be robbery and war; however, in recent years, are the tourists.
Old temples have a risk of damage just from a lot of people walking around the sight, and tourists?constant touch wears out the ruins. If these patterns continue for many years, the ruins might eventually lose its shape completely. Professionals are working hard to protect the Angkor ruins, and we question what we need to do to help the same goal.
