A playground for residents, Phnom Kulen or Kulen Mountain is a beautiful day out. The key attraction is the waterfalls at the topmost of Kulen Mountain and it’s also a great picnic spot; well set up in Cambodian style with hammocks and housings to keep you shaded from the sun.
The foundation of the antique Khmer realm, it is said that it was at Phnom Kulen that King Jayavarman II announced Cambodia’s independence from Java.

About Kullen Mountain :
Phnom Kulen has major symbolic importance for Cambodia as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, There is a sanctuary in the area, Phnom Kulen National Park, straddling the districts of Svay Leu and Va Rin. Its purpose is recreational and scientific in order to preserve the natural scenic features of Phnom Kulen mountain, like some famous waterfalls. Phnom Kulen is considered a holy mountain in Cambodia, of special religious significance to Hindus and Buddhists who come to the mountain in pilgrimage. The park is located about 48 km to the north of the provincial town of Siem Reap.
The attraction we visited in Kulen mountain includes:
1. Kulen Waterfalls
2. Preah Ang Thom
This is the main temple site at Kulen Mountain, Preah Ang Thom houses a large statue of Buddha. It was built in the 16th century and is eight metres high. Preah Ang Thom is the sacred and worshipping god for Kulen Mountain.
3. Srah Damrei
Srah Damrei, or Elephant Pond, is an area filled with stone-carved animals. This ancient Khmer sculpture is also accompanied by a couple of lions and remnants of some other animals. This is a very rewarding sight and worth trekking off the beaten path.

Welcome to Siem Reap! Wondering what to do in this region beyond Angkor? Well, in this vlog, we venture off the grid 1.5 hours outside of Siem Reap to a remote jungle where we find a sacred mountain and hidden waterfall.
First we visit Phnom Kulen, which is a National Park area located about 48 km to the north of the provincial town of Siem Reap. Phnom Kulen is considered a holy mountain in Cambodia, of special religious significance to Hindus and Buddhists who come to the mountain in pilgrimage. It is where the Khmer empire was established in the 9th Century and also served as the quarry for Angkor Wat.
The site has two waterfalls and a temple. The Buddhist temple has a reclining Buddha with views of the jungle. The waterfall is where locals gather for picnics and festivities. We went into the waterfall, which was refreshing after experiencing the 90 degree humidity.
The area was also one of the last strongholds for the Khmer Rouge in 1979 and even still has landmines.

Phnom Kulen National Park, Waterfall & Reclining Buddha. Siem Reap, Cambodia 2019 #8
Whilst deciding what to do in Siem Reap apart from Angkor Wat, we decided to take an organised tour to Phnom Kulen National Park to visit the waterfalls and explore the national park and the biggest reclining Buddha in Cambodia.
Phnom Kulen Waterfalls are approximately an hours drive from Siem Reap, and our guide initially took us to see the 1000 Lingas, with sophisticated Shiva Linga carvings covering its floor.
Then we headed up to see the Big Buddha in the main village complex on Kulen Mountain.
Finally we headed to the Kulen falls, which although not the rainy season, still proved to be be a worthwhile visit.

Camping One-night on Kulen Mountain near the magnificent cliff with my great friends. It was one of the best-experienced that I have ever camped my life on the top of Kulen Mount. We had such awesome day-activities such as; riding motorcycles through the villages in the countryside, exploring the heart of Siem Reap, swimming at the stunning waterfalls, Cooking food (BBQ), jumping into the pond at waterfalls and finally, finishing our trip on the fire came on Berng Chas (ប៉ឺងចាស់ឳ) in Kulen Mountain National Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia. This trip was one of my first night out in the wilderness trips with them since after I moved to the UK in 2016.
The most important is, I have got to hang out with these awesome friends and this documentary is something that always brings me such joy and the mind refreshing and a great time when I'm home. It always reminds me how much fun, silly things we did together that last a lifetime.
After Kulen mountain Camping I am travelling North of Cambodia near Thai border head to Preah Vihear Temple, Preah Vihear Province. I am hoping to set up my travel bed ( hammock) near Previhear Temple, near Thailand. For the next adventure, I will be isolated from the world and testing my patience by taking great risks set my journeys pursuing my plan by travelling around Cambodia within a month period before returning back to the UK the land I called a new home.
My next adventures will be:
I will be travelling through many of the provinces neighbouring Cambodia such as Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. I hope to settle my adventure to the coastline and the beach.
These are the following provinces I main to reach out;
First Night. Caping next to The world heritage temple called Preah Vihear in Previhear province, Steung Treng near the biggest waterfalls in Southeast Asia, the circular of the waterfalls stretched to 4km long, Ratanakiri Boung Yeak Loum lake, Mondulkiri, Bousra Waterfalls, Kampong Cham city, Svay Rieng province, Battambang, Sihanouk Ville, Koh Kong and Pursat.

Phnom Kulen National Park: is an isolated chain of small mountain plateaux of moderate height lying south of the Dângrêk Mountains. The range stretches for about 40 km in a direction and is located some 48 km north of Siem Reap.
Its highest point is 487 m and its height is quite regular, averaging 400 m all along the range.
Kbal Spean National Park: The carving of vestiges began with the reign of King Suryavarman I and ended with the reign of King Udayadityavarman II; these two kings ruled between the 11th and 12th centuries.The 1,000 lingas, but not other sculptures, are attributed to a minister of Suryavarman I during the 11th century, and these were carved by hermits who lived in the area. Inscriptions at the site testify to the fact that most of the sculpting was done during the reign of Udayadityavarman II. It is also mentioned that King Udayadityavarman II consecrated a golden ling here in 1059 AD.It is believed that the Siem Reap River flowing into Angkor is blessed by the sacred lingas over which it flows.

this video was taken when my last time visiting Siem Reap with my girlfriend. We drove a motorbike up there and it is a nice experience.
Phnom Kulen is located about 48 km north of Siem Reap town.and it takes you about 1.5 to 2 hours drive. It is free Entrance for local tourist and it costs USD 20 for foreigner for entrance fee.

From the center of Siem Reap to the Kulen National Park is almost 2 hours by car, (I do not recommend getting a tuk tuk) .. and you have to buy the ticket at the park office in the city (ask for your driver).

Phnom Kulen Waterfall - A Locals Playground in Siem Reap!
When you come to Siem Reap there is one thing you are guaranteed to see – other tourists! While that is to be expected in a magnificent place such as the Angkor Wat, there are a few places in the province where locals Cambodians go to hang out, if you know where to look.
The Phnom Kulen National Park is located on the Kulen Mountain, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours away from Siem Reap by scooter. Its main attraction is the large waterfall that serves as the playground to dozens of locals every day, seeking refuge from the unforgiving Cambodian sun. The locals here are super friendly and very excited to see other foreigners, so don’t hesitate to get into a water fight with them!
The mountain is also a very sacred site as it is considered the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. The most sacred is the Kbal Spean, or the Thousand Lingas, which are Hindhu-themed carvings made into the stones of a river bed. There are also dozens of temples scattered around the huge national park, the most famous (and accessible from the entrance) of which is the Preah Ang Thom pagoda housing a giant reclining Buddha. In short, you won’t run out of interesting things to check out at Phnom Kulen and it makes for a perfect day trip from Siem Reap if you’re a bit bored of all the Angkor Wat ruins.
Along the way to Phnom Kulen you can also stop by at Banteay Srei, an Angkor-style temple ruin with much less tourists compared to Angkor Wat, but still included in your Angkor Temple Pass.

Note that there are actually two sections of the Kbal Spean on the mountain, one accessible through the national park (linked above) and another one further away. We initially tried to visit the other one but were turned away by locals, not sure if it was closed or simply a misunderstanding as they were trying to guide us to Phnom Kulen.
Road tips:
• Make sure you get to the entrance of Phnom Kulen National Park before 11am, as I’ve heard the road is one way only and after 11am the it’s only for traffic coming down the mountain!

It's a really fun and exciting day to travel by motorbikes with Khmer Tourist Family on Phnom Kulen National Park in Siem Reap Province. We went to Dam Rei Krab temple. I flew drone at this temple and continued to Aram Rong Chen temple. The last location is Thmor Kral where there's pagoda and many people living there. I can't believe, we can visit many place on Kulen mountain.
I'm using Canon G7X Mark II, GoPro Hero 5, and DJI Phantom 3 Cameras for this video.
