The temple is famous for its golden Buddha image named Phra Buddha Chinnarat, considered by many to be the most beautiful Buddha image in Thailand. It is one of the most highly revered images in the country, which makes the temple an important pilgrimage site for Thai Buddhists.
The temple was founded in 1357 by King Phaya Lithai, King of the Sukhothai Kingdom. The King ordered the casting of three large Buddha images to be enshrined in the newly built temple. Some of the most famous artisans of his time were invited to do the job.
While the first two images came out perfect on the firs try, the last image took three castings. When it was completed, it turned out to be the most beautiful of the three and was named Phra Buddha Chinnarat.
The temple are locate in the center of Phitsanulok and named Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat

This beautiful Buddha statue with a flaming arch is famous throughout Thailand. The original Buddha is found in Wat Yai in Phitsanulok, Thailand. The Buddha is known as Phra Buddha Chinnarat. Many Thai people consider the Phra Buddha Chinnarat to be the most beautiful example of the Buddha in all of Thailand.
The Buddha is sitting in the Bhumisparsha mudra also known as the earth touching mudra or the calling the earth to witness, or the victory over (Subduing) Mara position. He sits with folded legs (right on top of the left). The left hand is held in his lap with the palm facing upward. The right hand extends over the right thigh, near the knee, with the fingers pointing towards the ground, palm inward.

Auf dem Weg nach Chiang Mai haben wir in Phisanulok einen Zwischenstop gemacht, um uns diese Anlage anzusehen. Für mich eine Enttäuschung, fand ich doch nur einen Jahrmarkt vor. Vor lauter Verkaufsständen sah man nichts vom Wat.
Große Party für einen Jahrestag. Bin nicht ganz schlau geworden, welchen Jahrestag für was gefeiert wurde.
Anstrengend war die Besteigung des Chedi. Bei einer stuhlhohen Setzstufe der Treppe merkt man das am aderen Tag in den Beinen.
Laut Wiki soll im Wat der Buddha das schönste Gesicht aller Buddhastatuen haben.

Phitsanulok (Thai: พิษณุโลก, pronounced [pʰít.sa.nú.lôːk]) is an important and historic city in lower northern Thailand and is the capital of Phitsanulok Province, which stretches all the way to the Laotian border. Phitsanulok is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, founded over 600 years ago. It is probably best known as the birthplace of King Naresuan, who freed the country from Burmese domination in the late 16th century, and his brother and successor King Ekathosarot (Sanphet III). As the cross-road between the northern and central regions of the country, it has long been important both for political and strategic reasons, and was fought over many times in centuries past. Phitsanulok was the capital of Thailand for 25 years during the reign of King Boromma Trailokanat of Ayutthaya. Located on the banks of the Nan River, the city was originally a small Khmer outpost known as Song Kwae, before the Khwae Noi River changed its course in the 11th century AD. Phitsanulok was also a provincial center of the Angkorian Empire during the Angkorian period. Phitsanulok is home to Naresuan University and Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University, as well as to a major Royal Thai Army base.
