Hanoi Old Quarter Best Attractions
!phô cổ Hà Nội
The Old Quarter (Vietnamese: Phố cổ Hà Nội) is the name commonly given to that part of Hanoi that has been in existence since imperial times and which used to be located outside the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. This quarter used to be a residential, manufacturing, and commercial center, where each street was specialized in one specific type of manufacturing or commerce. Nowadays, the quarter is an attraction for people interested in the history of Hanoi.
Another common name referring to approximately the same area is the 36 streets (Vietnamese: Hà Nội 36 phố phường), after the 36 streets that used to make up the urban area of the city. These 36 streets are not all located inside the Old Quarter proper, though.
The official extent of the Hanoi Old Quarter has been fixed by a 1995 decision from the Vietnamese Ministry of Construction[1]: in the north it is limited by Hàng Đậu street, in the west by Phùng Hưng street, in the south by Hàng Bông street, Hàng Gai street, Cầu Gỗ street, and Hàng Thùng street, and in the east by Trần Quang Khải street and Trần Nhật Duật street. Several of the streets that were part of the historic urban area of Hanoi lie outside this region, which was determined for being most dense in historical streets and for having maintained its historical character best.
The official Old Quarter is part of the Hoàn Kiếm District. Its total area is about 100 ha and it counts 76 streets distributed over 10 wards.
The residential and commercial area that is now the Old Quarter came to be during the Lý and Trần dynasties and was then located east of the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long and along the Red River. During the Lê dynasty, scholar Nguyễn Trãi already mentioned some of the areas each specialized in one particular trade. It was then surrounded by a defensive wall with several gates.
During the Lê dynasty, the area included several lakes and wetlands, the largest of which was Thái Cực lake. These lakes, as well as the Tô Lịch River were connected with Hoàn Kiếm lake and the Red River. Near the end of the 19th century these lakes and rivers became isolated from each other.
During the Lý and Trần dynasties, many people from the surrounding plains migrated to the city and settled in what is now the Old Quarter, creating the densest urban area of the city. The Lê dynasty period saw an additional influx of Chinese immigrants who arrived to trade, creating several Chinese neighbourhoods..
When the French ruled over Vietnam, they partially rebuilt the area. This period saw many French and Indians settling there to conduct business. Two small markets were demolished to make place for Đồng Xuân Market. Furthermore a tramway was constructed through the quarter.
36 guild streetsEdit
Hàng Bè street
The most famous trait of the Old Quarter are its areas dedicated to one specific trade or guild. Craftsmen from villages around the city used to gather in one area of their guild to sell their wares to merchants. The crafts or guilds of each area gave the names to the streets of the quarter, so that most streets acquired names starting with hàng(wares), such as Hàng Tre street (bamboo wares street) and Hàng Đồng street (copper wares street).
Several of the streets are still specialized in the trade that gave them their names. Others still specialize in one specific trade, but a different one from their traditional specialty — such as Hàng Buồm street (sails street) which has become dominated by Vietnamese cakes and candy.
The area is still the commercial heart of Hanoi
This guide of the best things to do in Hanoi Old Quarter is ideal for travellers looking to experience the rare sense of timelessness that seems to sum up this area of the city – you can still see glimpses of previous generations despite the modernisation that is going on relentlessly. This prominent district is relatively pedestrian-friendly compared to other cities in Vietnam - on weekends and evenings, the streets are closed off to motorised vehicles to make way for bia hoi bars and food stalls selling a variety of Vietnamese food. For a feel of rich old Vietnamese customs, you can also stroll along ancient commercial streets surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake, which are named after their original businesses dating back about 1,000 years. Located on the northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi Old Quarter’s most popular attractions comprise mostly quaint Buddhist shrines, street markets, and traditional Vietnamese arts.

VIETNAM’S LARGEST MARKET - Ben Thanh Market Ho Chi Minh City - Cheap Shopping in Vietnam
We visited Vietnam’s largest market, the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City! This is where you can find the best cheap shopping in Vietnam. Think fake bags, cheap clothing, Vietnamese food, and incredible souvenirs all located within the Bến Thành Market. We show you the day market and the night market in Vietnam so you can make the best decision of which to visit.
The Ben Thanh Market in Saigon is the one of the largest and oldest Vietnam Markets. With over 3,000 vendors, Bến Thành is one of the best things to do in Saigon. You can find some of the best cheap shopping in Vietnam here all for incredible prices. The quality of the goods in this market are great and haggling is a must while you’re here! If you want to relax and avoid the bargaining, you can stay to the fixed pricing sections along the outer walls of Ben Thanh.
As far as a fake market in Vietnam is concerned, I would say you can find the highest quality knockoff goods here for the best prices. There are many markets in Saigon, but Ben Thanh is the biggest and most centrally located out of all. It is also the market that is most geared towards tourists so make sure you bring your best bargaining skills.
Vietnams largest market, also referred to as Cho Ben Thanh, is located in district 1 Ho Chi Minh city. You can find everything you need in district 1 including food, drinks, Vietnamese culture and more. After visiting Ben Thanh Market, you might want to hang around district 1 Saigon and wait for the Ben Thanh night market to kick off around 8pm.
Cho Ben Thanh is easily the top night market in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. We enjoyed the night market in Saigon a little bit better than the day market because there was space to move around. However, both markets sell very similar items. If you’re looking for things to do in Saigon, we highly recommend both the Ben Thanh Market and the Ben Thanh Night Market.

About Cao Bang:
Cao Bang Province located in the northern part of the country has borders with Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, and Lang Son provinces within Vietnam. It also has a common international border (322 kilometres (200 mi) long) with the Guangxi province of the People’s Republic of China. The main town is also named Cao Bang.
Around 272km from Hanoi, Cao Bang is a mountainous province in far-north Vietnam, near Vietnamese-Chinese border. Cao Bang is mostly covered by the jungle and that was the reason why Uncle Ho chose it as the base for the country revolutionary in 1950s. It is a mysterious land of spectacular sceneries and historical significance.Cao Bang has a number of scenic attractions like Ban Gioc waterfalls, Nguon Ngao cave, Lenin stream, Thang Hen Lake and many others.
Cao Bang is said to record the dawn of Vietnam. There is a legend that is narrated to the first rulers of Vietnam, dated to 2838-2698 BC which corresponds to the Phùng Nguyên culture traced to a small settlement in Bac Bo (North Vietnam). According to this legend, De Minh, the great grand son of the Chinese emperor Shen Nung, married an Immortal in Honan Province. Their youngest son, Lộc Tục, was appointed to rule over Xich Quay which included, apart from territory in China, North Vietnam. Lộc Tục's son then married the daughter of King De Lai, Princess Âu Cơ. They had 100 sons, and, as per the prevailing societal custom of the Vietnamese which was matriarchal, the 100 sons were under the care of Âu Cơ, while her husband lived with his own mother. Suddenly one day Âu Cơ's husband announced to her that he belonged to the race of dragons and she to the race of the Immortals and that henceforth they could not live together. He thereafter moved south with his 50 sons; his wife moved to the hills in China with the
other 50, thus ushering a shift in the social culture of Vietnam, from matriarchal to patriarchal. This separation is said to have been the first divorce in Vietnam. It is conjectured that the hundred sons who were thus “scattered across the south of China were the Pai Yueh (Hundred Vietnamese)”. The sons of Lạc Long Quân who inherited the kingdom took the title of Hùng Vương (Brave King) and founded the Hồng Bàng Dynasty, which lasted from 2879 BC to 258 BC. The name of the kingdom was changed to Văn Lang, a tribal totem. The kingdom went through a series of changes with turbulent history, having changed hands a number of times and Âu Việt came to existence with Cao Bang as its capital. This legend is linked to present day Cao Bang, which is at the border with China.

As Air Pollution Worsens In Vietnam - Electric Vehicles Begin To Gain A Foothold
As #Air_Pollution Worsens In Vietnam, #Electric_Vehicles Begin To Gain A Foothold
Motorbikes swamp the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, taking advantage of the dangerous porosity among cars, buses and curbs to weather ever-more-obvious traffic jams. Almost all run on gas. They make noise. And they pollute.
This year people in the 9-million-population major financial center Ho Chi Minh City as well as the capital Hanoi are griping about air quality as it tests hazardous levels, especially late in the year. Some of it comes from coal burning for industry, per this research report. But a lot comes too from the exhaust of idling vehicles, the report says. Motorcycles are a prime source.
Now the Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup is trying to beat the problem by offering its first run of e-bikes. Its investor relations office says that 30,000 bikes have already been sold. Its subsidiary VinFast is manufacturing the vehicles at its 335-hectare plant in Hai Phong in northern Vietnam on an initial $1.5 billion investment. Sales started in November 2018. The factory has a capacity of 250,000 units per year with sights on an eventual 1 million units per year.
Sales are happening, but uptake is slow because unit prices are hard to afford and recharge stations few and far between.
“We do have electric scooters now, but it’s not as efficient as the old ones and they have to make charging stations,” says Do Van Chanh, 20, a university student in Ho Chi Minh City. “You cannot drive for a long distance with that kind of battery. And it’s quite expensive, to be honest.”
Slow pickup among consumers
During a Tuesday lunch hour in November, Mike Lynch sat in a coffee shop on Nguyen Hue Street in the touristy downtown tract of Ho Chi Minh City watching motor bikes pass to see if he could pick out something electric. He couldn’t.
More people would buy VinFast bikes if they had outdoor electrical outlets for battery recharging, Lynch says. Ho Chi Minh City lacks the battery swap systems of Taiwan, for example, where riders find a swap-spot every two to five kilometers. “It hasn’t taken off yet,” says Lynch, who follows Vingroup’s stock for his work. “I think people want to go green if they can,” he says, but “most people don’t have an outlet.”
VinFast’s bikes are designed to run for 80 kilometers at 30 kph per charge.
The company is now putting in place what the investor relations office calls “ a complete charging-exchange battery station equivalent to petrol vehicles.

Nearly everyone you talk to notices the air pollution building up in Ho Chi Minh City and the capital Hanoi. On what locals described as a typical day in November, the city received a World Air Quality Project score of 149, meaning “moderately polluted” and that children, the elderly and people with certain diseases should avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
“A few years ago we had only 7-8 million people and every year we have a new generation from other provinces who head to the cities,” says Phuong Hong, 39, a Ho Chi Minh City travel sector worker. “More air pollution from vehicles is for sure.”
But it’s hard to afford an e-bike on wages of as little as $171 per month, Vietnamese citizens and country analysts explain. A VinFast e-bike sells for VND39.9 million ($1,719). A lot of Vietnamese report they prefer to save money by repairing a bike over 20 to 30 years instead of getting even a new gas-powered machine that would burn cleaner.

SUMMARY
=======
Vietnam (UK: , US: ( listen); Vietnamese: Việt Nam pronounced [vîət nāːm] ( listen)), officially the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (Vietnamese: Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula. With an estimated 94.6 million inhabitants as of 2016, it is the world's 15th-most-populous country, and the ninth-most-populous Asian country. Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia across the South China Sea to the east and southeast. Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, with Ho Chi Minh City as the most populous city.
The northern part of Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 939. An independent Vietnamese state was formed in 939, following a Vietnamese victory in the battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese imperial dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonised by the French in the mid-19th century. Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War. On 2 September 1945, President Hồ Chí Minh declared Vietnam's independence from France under the new name of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In 1954, the Vietnamese declared victory in the battle of Điện Biên Phủ which took place between March and May 1954 and culminated in a major French defeat. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North Vietnam (officially the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) and South Vietnam (officially the Republic of Vietnam). Conflict between the two sides intensified in what is known as the Vietnam War with heavy intervention by the United States on the side of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1973. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Vietnam was then unified under a communist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) initiated a series of economic and political reforms that began Vietnam's path toward integration into the world economy. By 2010, it had established diplomatic relations with 178 countries. Since 2000, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world, and in 2011, it had the highest Global Growth Generators Index among 11 major economies. Its successful economic reforms resulted in its joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2007. Vietnam is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
