Siena, a city in central Italy’s Tuscany region, is distinguished by its medieval brick buildings. The fan-shaped central square, Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. The city’s 17 historic “contrade” (districts) extend outward from the piazza.
Siena is a city in Tuscany, Italy. Siena is the capital of the province of Siena. The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Siena is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year.
Siena is located in the central part of Tuscany, in the middle of a vast hilly landscape between the Arbia river valley (south), the Merse valley (south-west), the Elsa valley (north), the Chianti hills (north-east), the Montagnola Senese (west) and the Crete Senesi (south-east). The city lies at 322 m above sea level. The nearest international airports to Siena are Peretola Airport in Florence and Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa. There are two to three buses daily (Sena line) between Siena and Bologna Airport as well. Siena can be reached by train from both Pisa and Florence, changing at Empoli. Siena railway station is located at the bottom of a long hill outside the city walls. A series of escalators connects the train station with the old city on top of hill.

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, Italy.
It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometres outside the town.
San Gimignano has managed to conserve fourteen towers of varying height which have become its international symbol.
There are many churches in the town: the two main ones are the Collegiata, formerly a cathedral, and Sant'Agostino, housing a wide representation of artworks from some of the main Italian renaissance artists.
The heart of the town contains the four squares, the Piazza della Cisterna, the Piazza Duomo where the Collegiata is located, the Piazza Pecori and the Piazza delle Erbe. The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south.

This Piazza, entered from Via San Giovanni, is the main square of San Gimignano. It is triangular in shape and is surrounded by medieval houses of different dates, among them some fine examples of Romanesque and Gothic palazzos. At the centre of the piazza stands a well which was the main source of water for the town's residents. The structure dates from 1346. Although much of it has been renewed in the late 20th century, parts of the paving date from the 13th century.

The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south. Both Romanesque and Gothic windows sometimes have a bifurcate form, with two openings divided by a stone mullion under a single arch.

The chiesa di Sant'Agostino (Church of St Augustine) is the second largest church in San Gimignano, Italy, after the Collegiata. It is owned by the Order of Saint Augustine.
Sant'Agostino is an imposing 13th century building. The interior is a large hall dominated by the seventeen-panel fresco cycle on The Life of St Augustine around the high altar, painted by Benozzo Gozzoli between 1463 and 1467.
The altarpiece is the Coronation of the Virgin by Piero del Pollaiuolo (1483). There are a number of other frescoes in the church. The Cappella di San Bartolo houses the remains of the eponymous saint (1228–1300), a lay Franciscan who died of leprosy. The magnificent altar in the chapel is by Benedetto da Maiano.

SAN GIMIGNANO
Il borgo di San Gimignano ha origini molto antiche, anche se il vero sviluppo si ha verso la fine dell'Alto Medioevo, quando si passò alla formazione del nucleo più antico dell'attuale centro storico.
Uno degli elementi che caratterizza sicuramente questa splendida cittadina sono le torri, oggi ne rimangono solamente 13, ma si dice che in passato se ne potevano ammirare ben 72, queste costruzioni erano simbolo della potenza delle famiglie benestanti che risiedevano la.
In tempi più recenti la città è divenuta patrimonio mondiale dell'umanità da parte dell'UNESCO.
Lungo tutta la cinta muraria è possibile percorrere la passeggiata che circoscrive il borgo, da cui è possibile ammirare dei bellissimi panorami della Valdelsa, ed accedere da una delle numerose entrate al paese.
In piazza Sant'Agostino troviamo l'omonima chiesa a lui dedicata, in stile romanico con alcuni elementi gotici, la costruzione risale al 1298.
Sulla piazza si affaccia anche la Chiesa di S.Pietro in Forliano, una delle più antiche di San Gimignano, risalente al XII secolo.
Continuando verso Porta S.Jacopo incontriamo la chiesa di S. Girolamo, fondata nel 1337.
Poco più giù, a ridosso della porta, troviamo la chiesa romanica di S.Jacopo dei Templari, che la tradizione vuole sia stata edificata dai cavalieri al ritorno dalla I crociata.
Uscendo dalla porta di S. Jacopo e scendendo una ripida discesa arriviamo alla porta delle Fonti.
Questo era l'antico accesso alle fonti pubbliche, dove anticamente si attingeva l'acqua e si lavavano i panni; la costruzione risale al Trecento, a nascondere l'antica fonte in pietra longobarda del IX secolo.
Risalendo verso il centro, in prossimità del grande edificio di San Domenico incontriamo la chiesa di San Lorenzo in Ponte, in stile romanico, risalente al 1240.
Percorrendo gli stretti vicoli del paese troviamo la Casa di Santa Fina, giovanissima beata a cui i sangimignanesi dedicano una festa il 12 marzo.
Risalendo le caratteristiche vie del paese arriviamo in Piazza della Cisterna, antica sede di botteghe e taverne, che deve il suo nome al pozzo ottagonale posto al centro della piazza. L'atmosfera magica che vi si respira sembra davvero rapire e portare i visitatori indietro nel tempo.
Poco distante troviamo Piazza del duomo, su cui si affacciano numerose torri, il duomo, anch'esso in stile romanico, la cui prima edificazione risale intorno all'anno 1000 di fianco è situato il museo di arte sacra, che si collega al palazzo comunale edificato sui resti di un antico edificio nel 1298, è possibile accedere alla torre, la più alta di tutto il borgo, da cui è possibile godere di uno splendido paesaggio.
Salendo dalla via che costeggia il duomo arriviamo alla Rocca di Montestaffoli, di forma pentagonale, si dice che ospitasse in origine un castello e successivamente un convento. Dall'unica torretta rimasta è possibile godersi uno splendido panorama a 360° della Valdelsa.
- Per i percorsi del gusto ci vogliamo soffermare su due prodotti caratteristici di questo splendido borgo.
Il primo è un vino bianco prodotto in una zona molto ristretta della toscana, la Vernaccia, controllato e garantito dal marchio DOCG, è stato il primo vino italiano a ricevere il marchio DOC.
Questo vino ha una sapore asciutto e fresco, di buon corpo, con un caratteristico gusto amarognolo, ha un odore fine e penetrante. È caratterizzato da un colore giallo paglierino tenue, tendente al dorato con l'invecchiamento.
Il secondo prodotto invece è lo zafferano, una spezia impiegata come aromatizzante e colorante per alimenti, ottenuta dagli stimmi dei fori di una piccola pianta bulbosa, dai fiori violacei, nota anch'essa come Zafferano.
San Gimignano offre le giuste condizioni per la coltivazione e per la crescita spontanea di varie qualità.
Salita sulla Torre del Mangia a Siena fra le rondini
Direttamente da Piazza del Campo a Siena, per la gioia mia e dei miei followers, posto per voi il bellissimo panorama a 360° che si scorge dalla Torre del Mangia!
A partire dal Duomo con il suo Facciatone, è facile riconoscere la Basilica di San Domenico, sotto nella piazza Fonte Gaia, Palazzo Sansedoni, la Collegiata di Santa Maria in Provenzano, la Basilica di San Francesco, la Chiesa di San Martino, la Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Servi, Piazza del Mercato e in lontananza il Monte Amiata.
La particolarità di questa visita è stata la presenza incontrastata delle rondini, che con il loro delizioso volteggiare, ci hanno accompagnato fin sulla sommità.
La Torre di Palazzo Pubblico, prende il nome dal campanaro Giovanni di Balduccio, noto in città per essere un grande scialacquatore di denaro che gli valse l'appellativo di Mangiaguadagni o più semplicemente Mangia.
Secondo le cronache medievali, le sue fondamenta sarebbero state gettate nell'autunno del 1325, anche se le fonti documentarie attestano che i primi pagamenti furono elargiti a partire dal 1338.
Alla sommità si accede senza ascensore salendo circa 400 gradini, entrando da Palazzo Pubblico.
La Torre ha una pianta quadrata di sette metri di lato e quasi due di spessore e si innalza fin quasi 87 metri sulla quota del Campo (102 metri fino al parafulmine).
La parte terminale è costituita da una doppia corona merlata, denominata rocca, realizzata in travertino e pietra scura a ricordo dei colori del Comune di Siena, il bianco e il nero. Alla costruzione della Torre hanno partecipato numerosi tecnici succedutesi negli anni. In particolare ricordiamo lo scultore e architetto senese Agostino di GiIovanni e i fratelli perugini Minuccio e Francesco di Rinaldo, che dal 1341 al 345 ricevono frequenti pagamenti da parte del Comune per portare a termine i lavori.
La Torre è probabilmente completata già il 18 dicembre 1344, sebbene si siano documentati lavori fino al 1349, anno in cui venne installata una grande campana, il cui suono doveva essere avvertito nell'intera città. Dal 1360 il Comune decise di porvi un orologio sostituendo la battitura manuale, con quella meccanica. Il soprannome Mangia, attribuito al primo campanaro è trasferito d'ufficio all'automa in legno che con un martello in mano verso la fine del Trecento è issato in cima alla torre per battere le ore. Nel 1425 viene realizzato un nuovo automa in ottone, sostituito poi nel 1766 da uno in travertino (opera dello scultore fiorentino Angiolo BIni) rimosso dalla Torre nel 1780 ed oggi esposto nel Cortile del Podestà.
Dal 1666 troneggia sulla rocca una grande campana dal peso di 6764 Kg. Questa campana è denominata dai senesi Sunto dal nome della Beata Vergine Maria Assunta a cui è dedicata, o anche per la mole viene detta Campanone.
La sua inconfondibile sonorità grave e roca è dovuta ad una fenditura apertasi sul bordo inferiore nel 1831 e, ancora oggi, con i suoi rintocchi accompagna tutti i momenti più importanti della vita cittadina, soprattutto quelli legati al Palio di Siena.

Piazza Duomo
This piazza is to the north of Piazza della Cistern and is connected by a passage adjacent to an open loggia. To the west, at the top of the square, stands the Collegiate Church, reached by a broad flight of steps. The name of the square would seem to imply that this church was at one time a cathedral, but although it was perhaps planned, this was not the case. Other important buildings on the square include the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Podesta, the house of the mayor. The Palazzo Podesta is distinguished by its huge arched loggia.

At the centre of the piazza stands a well which was the main source of water for the town's residents. The structure dates from 1346. Although much of it has been renewed in the late 20th century, parts of the paving date from the 13th century.
Piazza Duomo
This piazza is to the north of Piazza della Cistern and is connected by a passage adjacent to an open loggia. To the west, at the top of the square, stands the Collegiate Church, reached by a broad flight of steps. The name of the square would seem to imply that this church was at one time a cathedral, but although it was perhaps planned, this was not the case. Other important buildings on the square include the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Podesta, the house of the mayor. The Palazzo Podesta is distinguished by its huge arched loggia.

La Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption ou Santa Maria Assunta en italien, appelée couramment Duomo di Siena est la cathédrale de Sienne, en Toscane (Italie). Elle domine une ville déjà perchée et concentrée entre ses remparts. Elle mêle les styles roman toscan et gothique.
Elle est connue pour son pavement intérieur entièrement constitué de marqueteries de marbre figuratives,
L'origine de la cathédrale est incertaine. Selon la tradition, une première église dédiée à saint Boniface aurait été construite sur le sommet de la colline où se trouvait l'agglomération romaine Castelvecchio. Au IXe siècle, l'église prend le nom de Sainte-Marie. En 1058, le synode qui élit Nicolas II se tient à cet endroit. Durant le XIIIe siècle, la Biccherna, l'office financier de la Commune de Sienne, consigne plusieurs actes financiers qui témoignent de l'avancement de la construction. Plusieurs artistes sont sollicités pour divers ouvrages, dont Nicola Pisano pour la chaire.
La coupole est terminée en 1264. La lanterne construite en 1664 est surmontée d'une sphère en cuivre doré portant une croix datant de 1385.
Vers 1280, Giovanni Pisano est chargé de revoir la façade. Les travaux s'échelonnent jusqu'au XIVe siècle durant lesquels la façade subit plusieurs remaniements. La cathédrale compte alors 3 nefs et 5 travées, ainsi que le campanile. Cependant, le 23 août 1339, l'édifice étant jugé trop petit, il est décidé de lancer le projet très ambitieux de nouveau dôme, soit un agrandissement perpendiculaire au mur latéral du côté sud-est. Les travaux menés rondement par Giovanni d'Agostino sont interrompus en 1348 en raison de la peste. Cependant, des déficiences apparaissent dans la fondation et dès 1350, il est recommandé d'abandonner le projet, ce qui est fait en 1355. On trouve trace de ce gigantisme non abouti dans le facciatone, un des murs, en arcade, élément porteur laissé sans objet et absorbé depuis par le Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo. L'accès à son sommet permet d'avoir une vue totale sur Sienne et la place du Campo.
La façade de marbres blanc, vert foncé (Serpentine de Figline di Prato) et rouge, et les trois portails à décors sculptés très fins sur les colonnes et les architraves.
Le campanile en marbre vert foncé et blanc à base hexagonale romane et à lanterne polygonale, des architectes Agnolo di Ventura et Agostino di Giovanni.
Le parvis accessible par un escalier à volée de marches qui donnera son nom à l'hôpital qui lui fait face Santa Maria della Scala.
Les trois mosaïques dorées récentes des pinacles, la Presentazione di Maria al Tempio (Présentation de Marie au temple), L'Incoronazione della Vergine (Couronnement de la Vierge) et La Natività di Gesù (Nativité de Jésus), exécutées à Venise en 1878 sur les cartons d'Alessandro Franchi1.
Au sommet des escaliers menant à l'entrée, se trouve deux colonnes ornées de la louve de Sienne.
L'intérieur de la cathédrale est célèbre par son utilisation du marbre vert foncé (Serpentine de Figline di Prato) et blanc et par son pavement. Il contient également nombre d’œuvres importantes.
La nef de 89,40 m de long est caractérisée par des piliers formées de bandes alternées de marbre blanc et vert foncé (Serpentine de Figline di Prato) , soutenant des arches en plein cintre.
Entre les colonnes au-dessus des cintres, 171 bustes en stuc représentent les papes.
Le chœur et son maître-autel de Baldassarre Peruzzi (1506) qui comportait la Maestà de Duccio de 1308 (à présent au musée de l'Œuvre de la cathédrale).
La statue de saint Jean-Baptiste et la pierre tombale de l'évêque Giovanni Pecci de Donatello.

Le pavement de 3 000 m2 avec ses 37 marqueteries de marbre, représente des scènes biblique et les sibylles, comme la sibylle hellespontique de Neroccio di Landi.
Le vitrail circulaire du chœur date de 1288 et représente les Évangélistes, les saints patrons de Sienne, la Mort, l'Assomption et le Couronnement de la Vierge, sur les dessins de Duccio di Buoninsegna.
Le vitrail de la façade, également circulaire, est de la main de Pastorino de' Pastorini sur des dessins Perin del Vaga. Il date de 1549 et représente la Cène.
La chaire de Nicola Pisano et ses disciples, à colonnes de porphyre et marbre vert (quatre reposent sur des lions stylophores), à arcs trilobés et sept panneaux racontant des épisodes de la vie du Christ. Elle a été créée entre 1265 et 1268. De plan octogonal, le balcon est soutenu par neuf colonnes. À la base, le piédestal de la colonne centrale est orné des sept figures des Arts libéraux et de la Philosophie. Les arches qui soutiennent le balcon représentent les vertus chrétiennes, les Évangélistes et les Prophètes. Le dôme a été construit entre 1215 et 1270.
