Verona's smaller square is surrounded by appealing palaces built by the city's prominent family, and also quite expensive cafés and restaurants. It is dominated by a statue of Dante Alighieri, which is also the reason why this picturesque square is sometimes referred to as Piazza Dante.

Piazza dei Signori, also known as Piazza Dante, is a square located in the historic center of Verona, near Piazza delle Erbe. The square was created in the Middle Ages by the development of the palaces La Scala, and assumed from the outset functions, administrative and political representation. The square is framed by some monumental buildings linked by arcades and loggias. For about a year Piazza Dante is crossed every Wednesday night by hundreds of young people and college students who have chosen it as a place to meet and socialize. Among guitars, flamenco dancing and battles of capoeira has quickly established itself as the new social phenomenon of Verona, involving more and more people and also attracting numerous tourists that populate the city in the summer. In the middle of the seventeenth century was given by the mayor of Verona, the construction of a fountain, which was built later by Peter German. Already at the end of the century it was decided that it was insufficient to decorate a square so monumental, so it was demolished. At the center of the square was erected a new monument in 1865: it was decided to place you a statue of Dante, who for a time had been housed in its own building overlooking the square, and which was the sixth centenary of the birth. The statue was made by Ugo Zannoni Carrara marble: supported by a pedestal, has a height of three meters. It was inaugurated on May 14, 1865. The bronze model is preserved in the collections of the Gallery of Modern Art Achille Forti. On the square are many buildings of great historical and artistic importance. The Palazzo della Ragione was built in the late twelfth century and the facade was modified to some extent in the nineteenth century. On the right you can move through an arc to the Old Market. To the side of the building you can see Cansignorio, semi-hidden, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Antica, a small church loved by the Scala family. On site there is also the tomb of Can Grande della Scala. A wrought iron gate, ornamental friezes shows in the symbol of the scale, and the Scaliger tombs are the remains of Mastino II della Scala and Cansignorio della Scala. The palace of the Podesta is located near the church of Santa Maria Antica; built by the Della Scala family, brings the typical Ghibelline battlements. The Venetians, in 1404, opened a new portal and added on top of the lion of St. Mark. The loggia of the Council, traditionally known as loggia by Fra 'Giocondo is located next to the palace of the Podesta and was commissioned by the City of Verona, for meetings of the Council of country. At the end of its construction has been postponed to 1476.

From Piazza delle Erbe, an archway - known as Arco della Costa” because of the whale rib (costola) that hangs from it - will take you into the splendid, austere Piazza dei Signori, surrounded on all sides by porticos and closed by archways, almost as if it were a courtyard.
The fulcrum of public life under the Della Scala family during the centuries the city was under Venetian rule, the square boasts a number of statues, starting from the nineteenth-century monument to Dante Alighieri, built in memory of the hospitality offered to the great poet by Cangrande Della Scala.
On the right is the Palazzo del Comune, or City Hall, the facade of which faces Piazza delle Erbe. On this side, you can recognize the Romanesque construction from the end of the 12th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. Inside is the large Old Market courtyard, surrounded by porticoes supported by pillars, with the usual red and white stripes created by alternating stone with brick. The beautifully elegant external stairway, a jewel of Late Gothic architecture, dates to the 15th century...

Inside Verona. Piazza dei Signori.
