PIAZZA DEL POPOLO-Ancient Entrance to Rome
The Piazza del Popolo was historically the main entrance to ancient Rome. Public executions were held here until 1826. The piazza features a large obelisk (with hieroglyphics) that was imported from Egypt; the Chigi Chapel which was created by Raphael; the Santa Maria del Popolo which was built over the tomb of Nero; two large fountains, the Fontana del Nettuno and Fontana della dea di Roma; and two beautiful twin churches, the Santa Maria dei Miracoli and the Santa Maria in Montesanto.

Here are several videos recorded recently at a presentation in Rome, Italy for the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4.
We get to see 7 Aventadors lined up together, one in white and another in the model's identifying orange livery, alongside several other classic Lamborghinis.
The Aventador moves around a little but mostly revs its supple V12 engine in the drizzle of a April day in Rome

Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo - Rome
The Piazza di Spagna (Square of Spain) is one of Rome’s most renowned squares. The name comes from the Palazzo di Spagna, the seat of the Spanish Embassy for the Vatican located on this square since the 17th century.
The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti in Italian) were built at the beginning of the eighteenth century connecting Piazza di Spagna and the Church of Trinità dei Monti. It is one of the most famous parts of Rome
Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome. The name means People's Square, but historically it derives from the poplars (populus in Latin, pioppo in Italian) after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name.

Piazza del Popolo and Pincian Hill in Rome, Italy
This large square is known as Piazza del Popolo, which literally means People's Square. The name Piazza del Popolo historically was named after Santa Maria del Popolo, the church located in the northeast corner of the piazza. The church was named after the poplar tree.
The neoclassical layout of the piazza was designed by architect Giuseppe Valadier between 1811 and 1822. The design forming two semicircles was reminiscent of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's plan for St. Peter's Square.
At the center of the piazza is an Egyptian obelisk of Sety I. The obelisk, the 2nd oldest in Rome, was brought to the city in 10 B.C. by 10 BC by order of Augustus. It was originally set up in the Circus Maximus before being brought to this location in 1589.
For a great view of Piazza del Popolo, head to the east and climb up as high as you can towards Villa Borghese. When you reach the top you will be rewarded with stunning views of the piazza below.

PIAZZA DEL POPOLO ROME ITALY

Rome, Italy - Piazza del Popolo, the Gateway to Rome! Food, Street Performances
Piazza del Popolo - the true gateway to the ancient city! Street food, street performances and vibrant night life!
The arch in Piazza del Popolo served as the Northern Gate for the old city and Popolo served as the gateway to my Rome trip, too, as I stayed just off the square in a refurbished luxury guest house - GCF Luxury Suites (great, great service, great location, and a great breakfast included! Did I mention the great service by the staff?)
Three main roads sprout off from the Piazza del Popolo, the main strip being Via del Curso, which takes you straight down to Piazza Venezia and to the Colosseum beyond that. The shopping district also begins there and you can walk to just about any of Rome's more popular tourist points pretty quickly.
It took a while to decide which video would be first from my Italy travels of 2020, but when I thought about it, I had to start with the Piazza del Popolo, just because my trip started here and the apartment just off the square would serve as my home base. The food was great, the street performances were superb and life around the square was vibrant!
Many great places to eat - street food and restaurants - in the area. Perfect location to serve as a home base to explore Rome!
It was a bonus that I arrived the day before Three Kings Day, so the Christmas festivities were actually still in full swing!
Enjoy this brief tour of the piazza and the surrounding area. Rome itself is such a vibrant city and Piazza del Popolo embraces that vibe!
Ah yeah!
