Italy: Turin's antifascists turn out against Forconi
Around 350 people of the antifascist movement, communist party and National Association of Italian Partisans came together to counter-protest against the Forconi movement in Turin, Friday. In preparation for possible unrest, the Turin Town Hall is protected by 20 military police equipped with tear gas masks, batons and shields
The Forconi movement was founded in 2011 in the wake of the financial crisis. Its base is with small business men effected by the economic downturn. It has been picked up support among right-wing movements and football hooligans, leading antifascist organisations to dub the Forconi movement as a fascist group. However, the group define themselves to be apolitical.
For five days the movement of the Forconi has been rising throughout Italy, protesting against the European Union and the austerity plans of the Italian government.
