Picketts Mill Battlefield State Park, Dallas, GA
This is one of the best preserved battlefields around. With the exception of some of the fields which are now grown with trees, this looks very much like it did on May 27, 1864 when the Union army on their march to Atlanta tried to outflank the Confederates. More than 10,000 Confederated under General Patrick Cleburne defeated more than 14,000 Federal forces under General Howard. This battle proved General Cleburne's leadership and tactical expertise. The Federals attack began at 5:00 p.m. and continued into the night. I can't image what that was like as this forest battlefield was dark even during the day. The steep ravines, heavy woods, thickets and creeks would have made fighting very difficult. I highly recommend you visit this park, but you should read and understand what happened before you arrive. The trail maps are good, but the descriptions of such a dense and confuse battle are hard to simplify. You can also try to get a guide which would really help. Call in advance too as the park is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The historian James Wooten is really helpful and knows his stuff. In 15 minutes with him I learned more about the regiments and armies that fought there than I had learned reading.
The Battle of Pickett's Mill
Pickett’s Mill is one of the best preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. Visitors can travel roads used by Federal and Confederate troops, see earthworks constructed by these men, and walk through the same ravine where hundreds died. An authentic 1800s pioneer cabin is furnished and open for tours during certain events.

Pickett's Mill Battlefield
The Battle of Pickett's Mill was fought on May 27, 1864, in Paulding County, Georgia, during the American Civil War between Union and Confederate forces. Union Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman attempted an attack on the right flank of Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. After the Union defeat at New Hope Church, Sherman ordered Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard to attack Johnston's seemingly exposed right flank. The Confederates were ready for the attack, which did not unfold as planned because supporting troops never appeared. The Confederates repulsed the attack causing high casualties.

Hitchcock Dallas Georgia 1904 to 1916 Oral History
On Sunday afternoon November 25, 1990, some Hitchcock Family Descendants drove from Marietta, Georgia, to Dallas, Georgia, so Grandmother, Myrtis Hitchcock Flournoy (nick named Nannan) age 86 in 1990, could share an oral history of the Hitchcock Family and her life from 1904 to 1916 when she lived with her family in Dallas, Georgia. Matt Flournoy recorded her oral history on an old VHS video tape. The old VHS tape was stored away unseen for over 23 years. Recently (one day ago) Matt copied it to a digital DVD in order to make this Mini Movie.

Myrtis was born on September 30, 1904, in her parents' home in Dallas,Georgia in Paulding County.Their home had no street address in 1904. It was known as Hitchcock Hill. Dr. Hitchcock, a relative of hers and one of only two doctors in Dallas, Georgia, at the time, delivered her.
Myrtis' parents were Matt and Dockey Hitchcock. Matt and Dockey had nine children.
Myrtis was one of them.
Matt and Dockey Hitchcock operated Hitchcock Dry Goods Store in Downtown Dallas ,Georgia, before 1916.

Battle of Resaca
The Battle of Resaca, Georgia was part of the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. The battle was waged in both Gordon and Whitfield counties from May 13--15, 1864. It ended inconclusively with the Confederate Army retreating. The engagement was fought between the Military Division of the Mississippi (led by Major General William T. Sherman) on the side of the Union and the Army of Tennessee (General Joseph E. Johnston) for the Confederates.
