Taunggyi in central Myanmar has a lively market with hill tribes and is the gateway to the famous Inle lake. Close to Taunggyi are the amazing Pindaya caves with more then 8000 Buddha statues.

Pindaya Cave:8000 images of Buddha
Pindaya is a town in the Shan State of Burma. It is located in the west of the state in Pindaya Township in Taunggyi District. Mainly famous for its limestone caves called Pindaya Caves where thousands of Buddha images have been consecrated for worship over the centuries, it is also one of the towns that host an itinerant market every fifth day.
The Pindaya Caves, located next to the town of Pindaya, Shan State, Burma (Myanmar) are a Buddhist pilgrimage site and a tourist attraction located on a limestone ridge in the Myelat region. There are three caves on the ridge which runs north-south, but only the southern cave can be entered and explored. It is not known whether the other two penetrate for any extended distance into the hillside.
Interior:The southernmost Pindaya cave can be entered and extends for about 490 feet along a well-worn path. It is known for its interior which contains over 8,000 images of Buddha. Some of the older statues and images in the cave have inscriptions dating to the late 18th century, or early Konbaung period, and the earliest one dates from 1773. There may be some images without inscriptions that are older, but based on the style elements, Than Tun believes that none of them is older than the early 18th century and even suggests 1750 as the earliest possible date. Although most statues are of late 18th and early 19th century, many other statues and images have been placed there on an on-going basis by different donors throughout the cave's history up until the present time, from lay people to the ruling authorities. The collection as a whole forms an impressive display of Buddhist iconography and art from early Konbaung era to the modern period. No other place in Burma displays such a range of style, not only in the images, but also in the ornamental thrones and reredos which surround the images.
Within the cave, there are about seventy unique images of the Bhisakkaguru tradition dating to the late 18th century. They are unique in that the styling of hair, eyes, nose, ears, robe are different from most other images from Burma. The salient feature of this type of image is the holding of a seed in the upturned right palm. Than Tun reports that such images are found nowhere else in Burma, and based on Buddhist iconography, that these images are from the Mahayana tradition, and the conjecture is that the Pindaya cave at one time served the Mahayana Bhisakkaguru cult.
Legends:There are many legends surrounding the Pindaya cave. One is that a blocked-off path at the end of the cave leads to the ancient city of Bagan. There is also the legend of the seven princesses bathing in a lake and how they were captured by a giant spider and trapped in the cave to be rescued by Prince Kummabhaya of Yawnghwe. Sculptures of the spider and the prince aiming with his bow and arrow have been added in recent times at the entrance of the covered stairway to the caves.Wikipedia

In der großen Höhle von Pindaya hätten sich der Sage nach 7 Feen ausgeruht, als plötzlich eine Riesenspinne den Eingang mit ihrem Netz verschloss. Ein Prinz soll ihre Hilferufe wahrgenommen, die Spinne mit einem Pfeil getötet und „pingu-ya (daher der jetzige Stadtname Pindaya) ausgerufen und als Dank die hübscheste Fee erhalten haben. In der Höhle befinden sich ca. 8.000 Buddhastatuen aus verschiedenen Materialien, die von Brautpaaren gestiftet wurden.

Visiting Myanmar you will be overwelmed by the amount of Buddha's, but the top of all is this Cave in which are more than 7500 Buddha's, and their number grows every day.
This place is a place of worship for the people.

Inle Lake Day Trip to Pindaya Caves
Today is day 4 for us in Inle Lake and we take a day trip to the Pindaya Caves. It is about 64KM from our hotel in Nyaungshwe and the drive takes around 1.5 hours. We book a taxi to take us there which cost 50,000 Kyat.
The cave is set in a limestone hill and there are actually 3 caves in the area but only 1 is open to the public. The cave is around 150 meters long and contains around 8,000 - 9,000 Buddha images and statues. While some of the older statues and images date back to the 1700’s, the number of images is actually still growing today because people are still donating and adding more.
The cave is huge and incredibly impressive. Every small corner of the cave is filled with Buddha images up to the ceiling. We also happen to be here during the time of a festival in a nearby town so it is completely packed with local people who are in town to celebrate.
After our visit to the caves, we make our way back to Nyaungshwe as we have another overnight bus to catch tonight to Bagan. The bus journey begins at 8PM and we arrive in Bagan around 3 in the morning.
We get a cab to our hotel and while we cannot get checked in right away, the hotel sets us up with some pillows in the lobby and we get some much needed sleep until around 9AM when we can get checked in to our room.
We are very excited to be here and explore Bagan over the next few days!

Almost a wonder of the world, this is an incredible cave Pagoda, a must see on your list when you go to Myanmar. Set on a high mountain , this natural limestone cave houses over 9000 golden Buddhas some miniature and some gigantic and overwhelmingly larger than life. and its quite a trail of mazes up and down through stalagmites and stalactites,i have never seen something quite like this in the world .
