PINEHURST GOLF CLUB 1938 AMERICAN GOLF RESORT NORTH CAROLINA 41324
This circa 1938 black-and-white Pictoreel sports film takes its viewer to Pinehurst, North Carolina — the cradle of American golf. The film shows several luxurious homes and street scenes as the narrator explains how golf is the life blood of the city, so much so that many businesses close during the course of the day so that owners may take time to head to the links. Even “gentlemen of the cloth … mingle with their flocks” as at mark 01:50 two clergymen walk to the greens toting their clubs. Mark 02:00 takes the viewer to nearby Taylortown, a rural community that’s almost exclusively inhabited by caddies and their families. The famed Pinehurst Country Club is shown at mark 02:45 as the narrator explains how the resort is home to the North and South Open (one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the United States from 1902 to 1951). Beginning at mark 03:08 the film shows several professional and amateur golfers taking swings at the 1938 North and South Open including Johnny Revolta, George Dunlap, Ed Dudley, and Jimmy Thompson, before following them to the greens. Byron Nelson slams one down the fairway at mark 04:03, as does Thompson and other golfers. Legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones is shown photographing the event at mark 05:08 as Horton Smith heads to the 18th hole at mark 05:20 and Vic Ghezzi is shown sinking the final putt to take the title. Several professional “feminine champions” at Pinehurst are also shown starting at mark 05:50 including Estelle Lawson Page, Dorothy Kirby, Virginia Hemphill, and Helen Guilfoyle, before showing some golf tips from the pros, including a few illustrated by Horton Smith. (Smith had won the 1937 North and South Open, and was the winner of the first and third Masters Tournaments).
Pinehurst Resort is a historic golf resort in the United States, located in Pinehurst, North Carolina. It has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments. Pinehurst was founded by Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts. He purchased 5,500 acres for approximately $1.25 per acre in 1895, and opened the Holly Inn New Year's Eve of that year. The first golf course was laid out in 1897/98, and the first championship held at Pinehurst was the United North and South Amateur Championship of 1901. Pinehurst's best known course, Pinehurst No. 2, was completed in 1907 to designs by Donald Ross, who became associated with Pinehurst for nearly half a century. After Pinehurst No. 2 was opened in 1907, Donald Ross said that the course was, The fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.
From 1902 to 1951, Pinehurst was the home of the North and South Open, which was one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the United States at that time. Pinehurst is still home to the annual North and South Amateur Golf Championships, a series of tournaments which includes a Men's Championship inaugurated in 1901 and the Women's Championship that began two years later. The first PGA Tour major staged at Pinehurst was the PGA Championship in 1936, won by Denny Shute. In 1951, the resort hosted the Ryder Cup, and in 1991 and 1992 it was the venue for The Tour Championship.

Pinehurst No. 2 Flyover Series: Hole 4
The longest par 4 on the course will play shorter because of the downhill tee shot, which has been restored to the original angle that Donald Ross intended. This hole, which played as a par 5 in both previous U.S. Opens, features a dogleg-left tee shot with the fairway canting from left to right. The large green is receptive to a long approach shot, and it is unusual for Pinehurst in that its predominant slope is from right to left.

.
Tournament update from US KIDS Golf website:
Day 1: The lowest score of the day came from the Girls 10 age group. Anina Ku of Basking Ridge, N.J., fired an astonishing 9-under-par 63 to take a commanding lead after one round of play. While her lead is large, it is not insurmountable. Grace Chen of Sunnyvale, Calif., shot a 4-under-par 68 to keep Ku on her heels. Monet Chun of Canada also went low in the first round, recording a 3-under-par 69. Three are tied for fourth, as Brooke Seay of San Diego, Catherine Lau of South Africa and Son Wooju of South Africa shot 2-under-par 70 to remain in the mix.
Day 2: Anina Ku of Basking Ridge, N.J., created more distance between herself and the field in the second round. She followed up her first-round 9-under-par 63 with a 3-under-par 69, getting her to 12-under-par 132 for the tournament. She holds a seven-stroke lead over Monet Chun of Canada, who put up a 2-under-par 70 to get to 5-under-par for the weekend. Samantha Marie Bruce of the Philippines follows at 2-under-par 142, while Grace Chen of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Brooke Seay of San Diego are in a tie for fourth position at 1-under-par 139.
Day 3: Anina Ku of Basking Ridge, N.J., held onto her substantial second-round lead to claim her spot atop the leaderboard in the Girls 10 division at 12-under-par 204. She posted a steady even-par 72, which was all she needed to hold her lead of seven shots. Ku's strongest challenge came from Monet Chun of Canada, who whiddled the deficit to four strokes after nine holes. But Ku was able to post a back-nine 35, erasing any doubt that she would take home the title. Chun claims second place for herself at 6-under-par for the tournament. Samantha Marie Bruce of the Philippines followed closely behind with a final-round 69 to get her to 5-under-par for the tournament. Catherine Lau of South Africa and Isabella Fierro of Mexico tied for fourth at 1-under-par 215.
Pinehurst No. 2 Goes Native, With NC State's Help
Over the last three years, Pinehurst No. 2 has undergone a transformation, with native plants and grasses taking over the space outside the fairways. NC State crop scientists helped course officials take the more natural direction, and the world will see their work this summer, as Pinehurst No. 2 hosts the men's and women's U.S. Open Championships.
