한미일 해군 북 slbm 대응 첫대잠수함 훈련
South Korea, the U.S. and Japan are conducting an anti-submarine drill in waters south of Jeju Island,... amid growing speculation North Korea is preparing for its sixth nuclear test.
South Korea's defense ministry says the drill, proposed at trilateral defense talks in December, is being conducted to prepare against possible launches from North Korean submarines.
South Korea is dispatching a 45-hundred-ton destroyer, the U.S. is deploying the USS McCampbell, armed with the Aegis ballistic missile defense system, and Japan is sending a helicopter destroyer.

Joint Chiefs of Staff say S. Korean navy's destroyer Munmu the Great on its way to help ...
합참, 피랍 구조 문무대왕함, 탄자니아 해역 지나고 있고 더 구체적 사항은 보안상 공개 못해
It was reported over the weekend that three South Korean nationals were among those kidnapped by pirates last month near Ghana.
Where those three are now is unknown.
Now, the foreign ministry in Seoul says that a South Korean naval destroyer is on its way to Ghana and will get there in about two weeks.
Park Jiwon has the latest.
It's been around a week now,... since three South Korean nationals were abducted by pirates in the waters off the coast of Ghana on March 26. Details of the incident are yet to be confirmed, such as any demand or request made by the hijackers or even the whereabouts of the hostages
South Korea's defense ministry said the warship Munmu the Great has been dispatched to the area, and it is expected to arrive near the coast of west Africa on April 16.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said to reporters Monday afternoon that the warship is currently passing the waters off the coast of Tanzania,... yet it addedfor security reasons, it cannot publicly release any further information about the destroyer's detailed route or any possible plan of action upon arrival.
The South Korean navy's destroyer is carrying some 30 naval warfare special forces troops,... as well as Lynx multi-role helicopters armed with 12.7-milimeter machine guns.
Meanwhile,.. Seouls' foreign ministry said the government is gathering necessary information,.. through diverse contacts,... including the U.S., Ghana and Nigerian governments, as well as neighboring countries,... to secure the safe return of the Korean nationals.
The foreign ministry said earlier on Monday that it is believed that about nine armed pirates used a speed boat to race toward the Marine 7-1-1,... a fishing boat with three South Korean nationals,... as well as some 40 crew members from Ghana, on board.
In a similar case,... back in 2011, South Korean navy's Cheonghae Unit successfully carried out an operation to rescue the South Korean crew of a cargo vessel hijacked by Somali pirates.

S. Korean Navy kicks off Dokdo defense drill
軍, 15∼16일 정례 독도방어훈련…함정 7척 투입
South Korea's Navy kicked off a special defense drill in Dokdo.
Japan responds sensitively to the exercise as it sends a stern message to Tokyo which continues its misguided claims to the islets that's historically and geographically Korean territory.
Kim Hyun-bin has the full story.
According to a Navy official, the drills that began Thursday are an effort to defend Dokdo from possible aggression by outside forces.
That's an apparent reference to Japan, which claims, wrongfully, that it holds sovereignty over the islets.
The warships involved in the two-day exercise include a 32-hundred-ton Gwanggaeto the Great-class destroyer and six other naval ships.
The coast guard as well as F-15k fighter jets and P-3 surveillance planes are also taking part.
On the islets themselves, marine units are conducting a landing drill.
The Navy official says the drills are a regular event held twice a year since 1986 based on the scenario of countering external threats.
This is the first drill held since South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office in mid-May.
Every year Japan has strongly opposed the exercise, and in March, its foreign minister Fumio Kishida lashed out against the drills calling them regrettable and unacceptable.
South Korea's navy says its forces have every right to conduct a defensive drill on its own land.
Sejong the Great DDG-991 - This Is The Pillar Of The Korean Navy
The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers is the United States Navy's first class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multifunction passive electronically scanned array radar.
Recognizing the superiority of Arleigh Burke class, some of America's allies both inside and outside NATO such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, Spain, and Norway have bought designs to produce Aegis versions. in particular, include the following classes of ships: the Japanese Kongo and Atago class, the Korean Sejong the Great-class, the Álvaro de Bazán-class of Spanish Navy, the Fridtjof Nansen-class of the Royal Norwegian Navy, the Hobart-class of the Royal Australian Navy.
We will explore these classes of destroyers in the next videos. In this video we will talk about the ship leading her class, the ROKS Sejong the Great - DDG-991. Two South Korean nationals seized by Houthi rebels
후티 반군, 예멘 해역서 한국인 2명 억류
Houthi rebels in Yemen have seized three boats carrying two South Korean nationals and 14 others in the Red Sea.
According to Seoul's foreign ministry on Tuesday,... the seizure took place in waters west of Yemen's Kamaran Island at around 3:50 AM, Korea time on Monday.
The ministry confirmed that the crewmen are in safe conditions.
Two of the three boats seized were South Korean, while the other was Saudi Arabian.
Houthi rebels claim the boats, which were traveling from Saudi Arabia to Somalia, violated their territorial waters.
A senior Houthi official told Reuters that if the seized ships are confirmed to belong to South Korea... they will be released after completing legal procedures.
Seoul has deployed its anti-piracy Cheonghae Unit, which operates off the coast of Somalia, to support the rescue efforts,... and has asked for cooperation from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

Experts investigate whether professor′s discovery is world′s oldest metal type
Five years ago, new pieces of movable metal type were discovered by a professor here in Korea,... who claimed they were the world′s oldest,... dating back hundreds of years before the previous discovery.
Now,.... experts here in Korea are going to launch a final investigation to lay any remaining questions to rest.
Here′s our Sohn Jung-in with more.
The world′s oldest movable metal type is from Korea, but it may be different from what was previously known.
Nam Kwon-hee, a professor of bibliography at Kyungpook National University, discovered new pieces of movable metal type in 2010, but since then, it has been at the center of an investigation into its authenticity.
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage recently said they had concluded that the type and the book printed from it, called Jeungdogaja, is authentic.
The institute says it was presumed to have been printed during the Koryo Dynasty between 1033 and 1155,... which is hundreds of years earlier than what was previously known to be the oldest metal-type print, Jikji, as confirmed by UNESCO.
A separate investigative team at the Cultural Heritage Administration said they will launch their own investigation, with the aim of designating the relics as national cultural property.
If approved, Jeungdogaja would be the world′s oldest movable metal type, a highly significant cultural achievement.
But it certainly won′t be easy.
For one thing, the members of the Cultural Heritage Administration have set terms that end in April, so the investigation is likely to be postponed until the new members take over.
And questions still remain, as the team that verified the type as authentic... includes Professor Nam, the man who discovered the pieces.
Sohn Jung-in, Arirang News.
