Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute
When you think of spying on foreign countries, tracking top secret satellites or listening for life in outer space you probably think of someplace outside Washington, D.C. But all of those things were happening in North Carolina.
Total Solar Eclipse from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute
A time lapse of the August 21st, 2017 total solar eclipse as seen from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) near Rosman, North Carolina. This is five minutes sped up 8x, centered on totality. Though clouds intervened, we had brief views of the diamond ring through high clouds leading up to totality. Shot with an Ion Air Pro 2, piggybacked on a Coronado PST. The last time totality passed over the PARI site was July 20th, 1506 and the next time won't be until October 17th, 2153.

Telescopes, Meteorites and Crystals Oh My..
My day at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. PARI is a non-profit astronomical observatory located in the Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina. PARI operates multiple radio telescopes and optical telescopes for research and teaching purposes. It has a planetarium and an exhibit gallery that houses an array of gems and minerals, most of them from North Carolina. The exhibit gallery also displays a world-class collection of meteorites, including actual pieces of Mars and the Moon, plus retired NASA Space Shuttle artifacts, some of which have actually flown in space. It also has a national archive of historic astronomical photographs featuring images recorded as far back as the 1800s.
PARI is located at the site of the former Rosman Satellite Tracking Station, which was established by NASA in 1962. The site was part of the worldwide Spacecraft Tracking and Data Acquisition Network and an integral communications link for the manned space programs Project Gemini and Project Apollo. The facility was transferred to the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Dept. of Defense in 1981 and, as the Rosman Research Station, was used as an signals intelligence gathering facility. The site was closed by the NSA in 1995 and turned over to the United States Forest Service.
After several years of inactivity, the government proposed to dismantle the facility. Recognizing the utility of the site, a small group of interested scientists and businessmen formed a not-for-profit foundation, which acquired the site in January 1999. Capital investment continues, allowing updates of the equipment for astronomical observation purposes. The observatory maintains a staff of professional astronomers, engineers, and other scientists.
