Located between Waynesville and Brevard on US Hwy 276, you'll find this amazing area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina.
I took US Hwy 276 south out of Waynesville headed towards Brevard. It's a smooth winding drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and continues down four miles to the Cradle of Forestry Home of the Biltmore Forest School. Not far past the school is the next road you come to on the left which Google map says its National Forestry Road not Avery Creek Road but it's actually Forestry Road 477. Turn left of FR 477, it's a well maintained gravel road and you will see the Forestry sign Roadside Camping Only. Though the road is narrow it is a well maintained gravel road. The first roadside camp is about two miles in at the top and the other seven road side camps are spread out the next two miles. If you keep going on FR 477 you'll come to a Horse Stables to turn around or continue past the Horse Stables and another five roadside camps are on the left. FR 477 comes back to US Hwy 276 turn left and you'll see the Pisgah Ranger Station/Visitors Center. There were 10 marked roadside camps with fire rings on this well maintained gravel road. Quiet and no one around and with day time temps in the upper 70's and night temp in the lower 60's makes it perfect camping weather.
RV'S or Travel Trailers Not Advised but their is Davidson River Campground as you head towards Brevard.

Ken Tanaka is back. This time camping and fly fishing in Pisgah National Forest on the Davidson River in North Carolina. Camping with kids can be awesome but also difficult. Here are some great camping tips. I was taking my 4 year old out camping for the first time and this is a fantastic place to bring a little one. So many activities around that area. Fly Fishing, Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education, Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, Pisgah Ranger Station, Looking Glass Rock, Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. It's also close to Brevard and Asheville as well.
Parking for the campsite is at the Wildlife Education Center and the campsite is only a 5-10min walk along the Davidson River.

Pisgah - Avery Creek 2015
Park at the NF Visitors Center, head west on 276. Turn right and head north on Avery Creek Rd. Pass the horse stables. Turn right and enter the Buckhorn Gap Trail. Turn left onto Clawhammer Rd. Turn left onto the Black Mountain Trail and summit Rich Mountain. Turn left onto Avery Creek Trail. Turn left onto Avery Creek Rd. Turn left onto 276. Return to the NF Visitors Center.
Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, Blue Ridge Parkway, Rainbow Falls Near Asheville, North Carolina
Clips from our recent weekend trip to Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls, Rainbow Falls, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. All of these are near Asheville, North Carolina.
Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls are located within the Pisgah National Forest. There is a short hike to Sliding Rock where you can slide down a natural rock water fall into an 8 foot pool of water that ranges between 50 - 60 degrees most of the year.
Looking Glass Falls, also located in the Pisgah National Forest, is a short hike right of the main road. Visitors can get in the small pool of water underneath the falls.
Rainbow Falls is located in the Gorges State Park in southern North Carolina. The hike to Rainbow Falls is a strenuous 1.5 mile hike to the waterfall that is over 100 feet tall. Just past Rainbow Falls with an additional .25 mile hike to Turtleback Falls (not in the video). Turtleback Falls is a 20 foot waterfall where visitors can slide down a rock formation into a pool of water.
Also, in the video are clips from a drive in the Blue Ridge Parkway. Views from the Blue Ridge Parkway overlook the Pisgah National Forest.
All of these parks and waterfalls are located within an hours drive of beautiful Asheville, North Carolina.

Visiting The Blowing Rock ✖ North Carolina
First stop of North Carolina had to be in Blowing Rock, at the actual Blowing Rock! Although this area isn't large by any means, anyone that isn't accustomed to the mountains or just loves the mountains of the midwest will love this cosy little spot. It's quaint and cute and it isn't free.... but at only 7$ a ticket it was definitely worth it to us!
What a rush of fresh air and the perfect area to start our journey.
It was pretty sunny--as you can tell by my sensitive eyes squinting the entire time so bring those shades!

Visitors can see the animals and plants indigenous to various sections of North Carolina, including noisy coyotes, various amphibians, and even the adorable river otters at Brandon's Otter Falls. The WNC nature Center not only features animals, but even an underground exhibit that highlights the geological functions and elements of North Carolina. Five Peaks Hike
Five Peaks Hike is a 9.1 mile loop trail (with 2 spurs) located in Hanging Rock State Park near Danbury, North Carolina. The trail is primarily used for hiking, trail running, nature trips, birding, and is accessible year-round. Dogs are able to use this trail but must be kept on a leash. Hiking counter-clockwise, peaks are: 1) Moore's Knob, 2) House Rock, 3) Cook's Wall, 4) Wolf Rock, and 5) Hanging Rock.

All hikers MUST park at the visitor's center. TO GET TO TRAILHEAD: walk back to the intersection where you entered the parking lot and continue straight across on Campground Road. You will cross a bridge and continue toward the family campground area. Just before reaching the turn-around loop at the end of the road the trailhead will be on your right and is clearly marked.

Cashiers, North Carolina has its own Sliding Rock, just like Brevard!
Cashiers, North Carolina has its own Sliding Rock, just like Brevard. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide, created by the Chattooga River gliding over a 10-foot high rock face with a few large potholes. Cashiers Sliding Rock is a great place to bring the kids to play in the pool at the bottom of the sliding rock or take the exciting slide into the pool. Dad can bring his fishing pole and fish for some wild brown trout further downstream. This is forest service property, and no lifeguards are provided. If you pay attention and evaluate the area upon arrival, it should be a very safe experience. Directions: From the intersection of U.S.64 and 107 in Cashiers, North Carolina (the Crossroads), travel south on 107 for 1.7 miles to Whiteside Cove Road and turn right. Travel 2.7 miles where you will cross a small bridge and see a small parking area just past this bridge and to the right. There are a couple of trails that lead from two parking areas. You'll hear the rushing water once you get out of your car.

It's safe to say that Phil and I are the nerdiest mountain bikers on YouTube, so whenever we're in each others' neighborhoods we make it a point to link up. I was in Asheville for the day, and had 6 hours to get to a trail, ride it, and get back to town. Phil was up for it, and met me out there!

Welcome to riding with Seth. Today, we’ll venture into the forest for a morning ride in North Carolina. I was up there for some reasons I can’t discuss right now, and had just Saturday morning to do some riding. Just a few hours in one of the best riding destinations on the East Coast. That’s kind of like torture, but I decided to make it count.
Some of you might recognize this Raleigh Tokul.
Phil and I talked a bit while climbing, but I was wondering how I’d fare against him on the descent. After all, Phil is a professional downhill racer, but on a relatively low end hardtail he was at a disadvantage. All I needed to do was follow his line, right?
So Phill smoked me on the downhill, but that wasn’t surprising. As I’ve preached before, the bike does not make the rider. We started climbing a different route, but this time I’d lead us down.
Any of you guys use the new GoPro app that makes you log in just to use it. End Rant.
In looking at the footage, the trail was obviously to the left.
Maybe I have trouble seeing things from a hiker’s perspective, but sitting in the middle of a steep and narrow section of multi use trail seems like a bad idea. Still we weren’t even close to hitting these hikers. The battle continues.
So much for taking it easy on my shoulder.
Anyway, that’s it for this very short morning ride. I’ll be back up to the Asheville metro area a few more times this winter. Hopefully next time it won’t be so rushed. Sliding Rock in Asheville NC
So Much Fun! If you ever get a chance, check out this natural rock formation in the Pisgah Natural Forest. Sliding Rock is a waterfall in Western North Carolina, located near Brevard, so named because visitors can slide all the way down the waterfall into the plunge pool below. Admission is $2 and well worth it, as you can slide as many times as you want. I only did it once, because the water was about 50 degrees that day.

Asheville is one our favorite stops! The area not only boasts so much beauty, but a wide variety of family friendly activities! Janelle enjoyed a kid free day exploring The Biltmore estate and gardens. We hiked through the Smokies, explored Cataloochee and Maggie Valley, and enjoyed lots of good eats! We were in the area in Early March and it was still quite cold, snowed a few days and the Blueridge Parkway was not open completely yet.
