Palm Canyon is a tropical oasis, containing more than 450 palms (58 species) within its 2 acres. A true hidden spot in Balboa Park, the winding paths take the visitor into a shady, lush canyon. The original group of Mexican fan palms - so prominent in the canyon - date back to 1912. In 2001, the California Conservation Corps restored the historic trail that connected Palm Canyon to the Old Cactus Garden. The garden also features a picturesque wooden footbridge leading from the Alcazar Gardens parking lot to across the street from the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. San Diego Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) urban cultural park in San Diego, California, United States named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The trees here were planted by the famous American gardener Kate Sessions. Placed in reserve in 1835, it is one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to public recreational usage. Besides open areas and natural vegetation, it contains a variety of cultural attractions including museums, theaters, gardens, shops and restaurants as well as the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[2][3] The park is managed and maintained by the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department.
Many of the park's attractions are along El Prado, a long, wide promenade running through the center of the park. Most of the buildings lining this street are in the Spanish Revival style, a richly ornamented eclectic mixture of Spanish and Latin American architecture.[2] Along this boulevard are many of the park's museums and cultural attractions, including the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Art Institute the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, the Natural History Museum, the San Diego Historical Society, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the Reflection Pond, the latticed Botanical Building (which is always free), the Bea Evenson Fountain, and Timken Museum of Art.
Adjacent to the promenade is the world famous San Diego Air & Space Museum.

National Anthem - GoPro - 4,518 Pipe Spreckels Organ - 100th Anniversary Balboa Park
Today on the 100th Anniversary of Balboa Park the Artist Played the National Anthem on the Spreckels Organ.
Very Incredible Performance, Thank You!
Initially, Bertram Goodhue's plans for Balboa Park for the Panama-California Exposition included a music pavilion that would be located north of Plaza de Panama. After Brazil decided not to participate with a building in the exposition, the pavilion was built at their site instead. Spreckels chose Harrison Albright to design the organ pavilion. Albright was a self-taught Los Angeles architect, who previously designed the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. The semi-circular pavilion was built by the F. Wurster Construction Company in an ornate Italian-Renaissance design. The organ was built by Austin Organs, Inc. as their Opus #453. It has 73 ranks totaling 4,518 pipes and faces north to protect the pipes from the sunlight. The audience therefore faces south. Commercial airplane landings at San Diego's Lindbergh Field occasionally compete with the organ's sound.
During the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition the stage size was doubled and a fountain added. The fountain can be lit at night and is modeled after one in Chapultepec Park in Mexico City. In 1981 the pavilion was restored and in 2002 the organ was expanded from 3,400 to 4,518 pipes.
SAN DIEGO 7 BRIDGE HIKE + ABANDON BRIDGE 2019
On this day (August 2019), I hiked the famous seven bridge hike in San Diego, California. Although technically, there are more than seven bridges. The Seven Bridge Walk is around 6.5 miles or more, depending on the path you take. It is a reasonably trafficked loop trail and is available for all skill levels. The trail is mainly used for hiking, walking, and nature trips. The best months to hike this adventure walk would be from April until September, but it’s San Diego and any month is fine in my opinion.
Frist, Park Boulevard Bridge start on the east side of Park Boulevard near Village Place and find the entrance to a bridge by one of Balboa Park’s sweetest-smelling features: the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden. Make your way across and toward the park’s Bea Evenson Fountain.
Second, Cabrillo Bridge was built in 1914 ahead of the Panama-California Exposition and was the state’s first multiple-arched cantilever bridge. Back then, a pond flowed below it.
Third, First Avenue Bridge was assembled in a Midwestern fabrication plant, dismantled, and shipped to San Diego in 1931 before being retrofitted for earthquakes in 2010. This bridge is the only steel-arch bridge in San Diego.
Forth, Quince Street Bridge is a 236-foot-long bridge crossing 60 feet above Maple Canyon. The wooden-trestle affair was constructed in 1905 for pedestrian access to the Fourth Avenue Trolley Station.
Fifth, Spruce Street Suspension Bridge is an iconic swaying suspension bridge built in 1912 that crosses Kate Sessions Canyon. A popular location for social media.
Sixth, Vermont Street Bridge was built in 1995 to replace a wooden-trestle bridge dating back to 1916.
Lastly, Georgia Street Bridge is a concrete bridge connecting Hillcrest and North Park that was built in 1914 which is landmarked. The bridge was currently ongoing major restoration and was reopened to pedestrian traffic in 2018.
