Plaza de Santa Ana is a plaza located in central Madrid, Spain, nearby Puerta del Sol and Calle de Huertas, in the Barrio de las Letras. It features monuments to Spanish Golden Age writer Pedro Calderón de la Barca and the Granadian poet Federico García Lorca and numerous restaurants, cafes and tapas bars, with its terraces covering most of the sides surfaces.
Teatro Español, the oldest theater in Madrid, is located on the plaza's east side. It was built in seventeenth century and then had the name Corral del Príncipe. On the west side of the plaza, a luxury hotel (now ME Madrid Reina Victoria) was built in the early nineteenth century. The hotel achieved fame for being the favorite among the most popular bullfighters. For example, the regular guest Manolete always reserved room number 220 in superstition. The plaza is a popular meeting point in Madrid.
The name derives from a monastery with the name Santa Ana that occupied the current location in the seventeenth century. The origins of the modern plaza go back to Joseph I, who in 1810, with urban sanitation of Madrid in mind, demolished the old Carmelite monastery and the adjoining houses. The plaza began to take its current appearance, which was almost completed in 1880 when buildings that obstructed the view of the Teatro Español was demolished.

The area around tthe Huertas street is one of the livelier and more interesting neighbourhood in Madrid. A lot of famous Spanish writers lived there during the 17th century, the peak of teh Spanis literature. The house of the play writer Lope de Vega has survived and it is now a museum. A 17th century nun convent can also be found in this neighbourhood. Around Huertas street there are some interesting baroque and neoclassical palaces and buildings.
There a lot of bars and restaurants in the Huertas neighbourhood, which can be crowded during the nights, specially at weekends. Near the Huertas street the Plaza Santa Ana (St Anne´s Square) is located , full of bars and terraces.

PLAZA DE SANTA ANA (MADRID)
La Plaza de Santa Ana (también conocida antiguamente por Plaza del Príncipe Alfonso) es una plaza urbana ubicada en el centro de Madrid. Esta plaza, que ha cambiado en diversas ocasiones a lo largo de su historia, se encuentra en el denominado Barrio de las Letras.
Debe su origen a José I quien en 1810, dado su afán por el saneamiento urbano de Madrid, en cargó a Silvestre Pérez el diseño de una nueva plaza, demoliendo el antiguo convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas y las casas anexas. El solar resultante se ajardinó y comenzó a tomar su fisonomía actual.2 En 1880 se demolieron algunas casas que impedían ver el Teatro del Príncipe, construido en 1745, actual Teatro Español, quedando completamente dispuesta la configuración actual.
Hay en ella gran número de restaurantes, cafeterías y bares de tapas, que cubren con sus terrazas la mayor parte de su superficie. La Cervecería Alemana, establecimiento de 1904, frecuentada por funcionarios de la embajada americana, por toreros como Dominguín, escritores como Ernest Hemingway y por los primeros hippies que tuvo Madrid, allá por los años 1970, es uno de sus establecimientos más señeros.
La cafetería La Suiza, casi centenaria es también famosa, y destaca por su leche merengada. El colmado Villa Rosa, de los años 1930, conserva una gran decoración de azulejos andaluces. Las paredes de su exterior también están decoradas por cuadros de azulejos.
En uno de sus laterales se edificó, a principios del siglo XIX, un lujoso hotel (el actual ME Reina Victoria) que alcanzó fama por ser el lugar preferido de los más populares toreros. Manolete, por ejemplo, reservaba siempre, por superstición, la habitación número 220 del hotel.
En su esquina con la calle del Príncipe se encuentra el Teatro Español, existente ya en el siglo XVII con el nombre de Corral del Príncipe y anexo a otro corral más antiguo, el de la Pacheca.4
Tiene estatuas dedicadas al dramaturgo del Siglo de Oro Calderón de la Barca y al poeta granadino Federico García Lorca.
