The city of Ávila is located in the centre of Spain, founded in the 11th century to protect the Spanish territories from the Moors, this City of Saints and Stones has maintained its medieval austerity, and is the birthplace of Santa Teresa de Jesús and burial place of the Grand Inquisitor, Torquemada. This purity of form can still be seen in Catedral de Ávila, the first Gothic cathedral in Spain, and fortifications that, with their 87 semi-circular towers and nine gates, is the most complete found in Spain.
Ávila was included in the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1985 as a legacy for future generations. The Old Town of Ávila, which includes the walled town of Ávila and four extra-muros Romanesque churches: San Segundo, San Andrés, San Vicente, and San Pedro. In 2007, another three Romanesque churches; San Nicolás, Santa María de la Cabeza and San Martín, and three convents from the 15th and 16th centuries; La Encarnación, San José and the Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás, were added to the inscribed property in UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Following the Reconquest of Toledo in 1085 by Alfonso VI, a policy of repopulation was undertaken to shore up the Kingdom of Castile, which was still vulnerable. The rise of Segovia, Ávila, and Salamanca during the Middle Ages stemmed from this strategic plan. Ávila alone has kept its surrounding walls, which in part date back to 1090, while the greater part appear to have been rebuilt during the 12th century. The intra-muros town and the walls that surround it, as well as the other component parts, show the magnificence of the medieval city, reflected in the Romanesque style of the churches, and expressing the Golden Age of Ávila in the architecture of convents and monasteries.
Santa Teresa de Jesús, also called Saint Teresa of Ávila, original name Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, was born on March 28, 1515, in Ávila and died on October 4, 1582, in Alba de Tormes. Santa Teresa de Jesús was canonized in 1622, being one of the great mystics and religious women of the Roman Catholic Church, and author of spiritual classics. She was the originator of the Carmelite Reform and elevated to doctor of the church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI, the first woman to be so honoured.

Avila, Walk on the City Walls - Spain 4K Travel Channel
The city walls of Avila in Castile-Leon is the landmark of the city. The completely preserved wall is 2500 m long, 12 m high and has 2,500 merlons, 88 towers, and 9 city gates. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, it served as a protection from attackers, as well as control of the movement of goods and defense against epidemics.
The city of Avila had its best time in the 16th century when the textile industry flourished. At that time, one built many Renaissance palaces that characterize the cityscape. Today the cultural and historical heritage of the city is unique. The cultural and town historical inheritance determines its uniqueness today.
In 1884, the city walls of Avila were registered as National Monument. Since 1985, they belong to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites.
Due to its altitude of over 1100 m of height Avila is a popular tourist destination in the midsummer, but the Christmas week is the most important tourist season.
Two important personalities put their stamp on Avila. Isabella the Catholic (Isabella I of Castile), who conceived the Inquisition here, and Teresa of Avila, who reformed the order of the Carmelites and founded numerous monasteries.
A walk on the city wall is a must for any visitor of Avila. There are 3 entrances. Two in the east and one in the west. We first choose one of the two in the east. It allows us to explore a part of the southern wall.
The entrance is right next to Calle Don Geronimo. At the square inside the wall, you find the building with the Ministerio De Economia Y Hacienda, that also houses the Cadastral Office (Gerencia Territorial del Catastro de Avila).
On the other side of the wall, you have a nice view of the monastery Parroquia de San Pedro Apostol and the square in front of it, Plaza de Santa Teresa de Jesus.
Once you reach the southern part of the wall, the eye is drawn to the Iglesia de Santiago.
We turn around and walk a little further along the east wall towards the cathedral. But soon the way ends.

Walled City of Avila, Spain
Avila is famous for its medieval walls. Construction began in 1090AD and continued for about three centuries. At completion, the walls were about 2.5 kilometers long, 10 feet thick and more than 36 feet thick and average almost 40 feet high. There are 88 towers along the walls; nine gates provide access. Some segments atop the wall are open to visitors.
Avila also claims to have more Romanesque and Gothic churches per capita than any other city in Spain.
Avila is to the west of Madrid, and is easily accessible via train, making for a nice day trip if you're based in Madrid.
Old Town of Avila with its Extra-Muros Churches is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travel Guide Spain /// Ávila
Ávila's old city, surrounded by imposing city walls comprising eight monumental gates, 88 watchtowers and more than 2500 turrets, is one of the best-preserved medieval bastions in all Spain. In winter, when an icy wind whistles in off the plains, the old city huddles behind the high stone walls as if seeking protection from the harsh Castilian climate. At night, when the walls are illuminated to magical effect, you'll wonder if you've stumbled into a fairy tale. Within the walls, Ávila can appear caught in a time warp. It's a deeply religious city that, for centuries, has drawn pilgrims to the cult of Santa Teresa de Ávila, with many churches, convents and high-walled palaces. As such, Ávila is the essence of Castilla, the epitome of old Spain.

Avila by Tuk-Tuk - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Seeing a Tuk-Tuk in Avila surprises us. While looking for a mean of transportation to the viewpoint of Cuatro Postes, we speak to the driver Julio and arrange an appointment. Later we discover an information display at the Puerta del Alcazar, in front of Residencia Tellamar in the San Segundo street. Here you can choose the departure time and enter your name. This ensures that you can get a Tuk-Tuk at a certain time.
As we visit the viewpoint Cuatro Postes several times and are not always ready to walk with our film equipment, we are glad using this service. So we can enjoy Avila in the sunshine and in the dark.
At the viewpoint, at the southern city wall, we get a free concert. The orchestra is practicing for the upcoming Semana Santa.
Usually, the Tuk-Tuk tour leads to all important sights of Avila but individual arrangements are possible anytime. Our driver Julio is friendly, punctual and open to meet our wishes. He also gave us the hint of the second viewpoint, north of the Cuatro Postes. We like to take this opportunity and again thank him for his good service.
Unfortunately, the film shots during the ride are quite shaky. This is not due to the Tuk-Tuk but to the cobblestone streets usual in Spain.
There is also a regular bus service to the Cuatro Postes. The bus stop is at Plaza San Vicente in front of the Basilica de San Vicente.
But a tour with the Tuk-Tuk in Avila is more fun!
