The Point Arena Lighthouse is set in one of the most spectacular yet peaceful surroundings on the northern California coast, the Point Arena tower is the only Pacific West coast lighthouse of significant height (115 feet) that you can climb to the top!
Point Arena Lighthouse is in Mendocino County, California, United States, two miles (3 km) north of Point Arena, California. It is located approximately 130 miles (210 km) north of San Francisco in the Fort Point Group of lighthouses
The lighthouse at this site was constructed in 1870. The brick-and-mortar tower included ornate iron balcony supports and a large Keeper residence with enough space to house several families. In April 1906, a devastating earthquake struck the Light Station. The Keeper's residence and Lighthouse were damaged so severely that they had to be demolished.
The new Lighthouse began operation in 1908, nearly 18 months after the quake. It stands 115 feet (35 m) tall, and featured a 1st Order Fresnel Lens, over six feet in diameter and weighing more than six tons. The lens was made up of 666 hand-ground glass prisms all focused toward three sets of double bullseyes. It was these bullseyes that gave the Point Arena Lighthouse its unique light signature of two flashes every six seconds.

The rocky coastline along the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands in Mendocino County embodies wild natural beauty: 1,700-acres of dramatic seascapes and memorable coastal hikes. Look for the cool, historic lighthouse as well as unique wildlife sightings, such as the endangered Point Arena Mountain Beaver and the California Red-Legged Frog. Come to this California Coastal National Monument between November and April, and you’ll also find excellent whale-watching: humpback, blue, and gray whales make their annual commutes between Alaska and Mexico.

Point Arena Mendocino Hike
Still cannot believe we live near this much beauty! The Mendocino coast with the sandstone rock formations and the foggy skies and turbulent seas trigger so much love for the coast.
The hubs and the bosslady were camping just in from Point Arena and enjoyed the lovely hike along the coast in the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands. Most of the hike included views of the historic lighthouse and of course the ocean.
Walking from the lighthouse down to where we could see the Point Arena pier was breathtaking! Fellow hikers told us of 3 arched rock formations that formed a tunnel. Hearing about this and knowing the tide was coming in, we picked up our pace and headed for the ravine to view this incredible site. Spectacular!!

Dash Point Pier Crabbing
This is me crabbing at Dash Point Pier in Washington using a crab ring. This is what I prefer to use over the square crab pot. I like to use salmon heads from the fish I caught in prior seasons of fishing. A lot of people use chicken legs and different fish or squid. I switch to these baits if I run out of salmon heads. I usually leave my ring sitting for about 10-15 minutes before I pull it up. This season has been horrible for Dungeness crab due to heavy fishing of them prior to the season opening. All I caught on this trip was Red Rock crab. In the Puget Sound you can keep either sex of Red Rock crab as long as they're a minimum width of 5. You measure them at the widest part of the shell just in front of the rear most point or tips. Dungeness crab need to be male only and 6 1/4.
