Point Buchon Trail on the California Central Coast
A 6.6 mile trail off the Central Coast in Los Osos, California. This trail was a moderate level hike with excellent views. Be prepared for another long stretch after you reach the rest area away from the ocean. This trail is on PG&E property so you need to sign in and out at the front.

Oats Peak (Loose) Trail - Montana de Oro State Park, Los Osos, California
The Oats Peak Loose Descent is the less-traveled, and steeper option down from the top of the Oats Peak Trail. If you climb the entirety of the Oats Peak Trail from Spooner's Cove/Islay Creek Campground, you'll see the bottom of this trail tie in at the Valencia Peak Trail (no bikes) junction, just above the split for Beebe. To reach the beginning of this trail, hike up (or ride if you can!) to the left from the T at the end of the Oats Peak Trail climb. You'll typically encounter far fewer riders coming up this trail than you will the more gradual Oats Peak option.
The top of this trail offers some of the best views in the park!
PRO TIP: Park backed in with a view of Spooner's Cove near the trailhead, and have a couple of cold beers stashed in your car for after the ride. Sit on the hatch/tailgate/bumper and soak up some views! This ride can also start and end from Islay Creek Campground, so book a night or two there if you're visiting to get the most of Montana de Oro's killer trail network. Shout out to the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers for putting in the man hours to build and maintain this rad little trail system!

4K Buchon Point Trail, Central California Coast
Located in San Luis Obispo County, Point Buchon is accessed via Montaña de Oro State Park south of Morro Bay. Buchon Point actually belongs to PG&E which run Diablo Canyon Power Plant, the only nuclear power plant still running in the state of California. PG&E opens the trail to a viewpoint where you can see the power plant in the distance. Parking was free as was entrance, you just have to sign in with the person manning the little entrance building at the trailhead as they keep track of everyone going in and out. The hike is about 6.5 miles in and out with moderate amount of uphill.
Filmed December 2017, Mavic Pro and GH5.
Exploring MDO State Park and Point Buchon Trail Guide Overview
This is a quick overview of Darlene's and my latest trail guide, Exploring Montana de Oro State Park and Point Buchon.
We are now retired and love to explore the outdoors. We felt Montana de Oro deserved its own trail guide as many of the trails have changed in past years.
None of the trail guides currently available other than this one have the correct information in them.
We hope you enjoy this guide. It will be available in April 2016 at your local bookstore. The color E-Book for Kindle, IPad and IPhone is available now on Amazon.
Awesome Rockfish off of Bluff trail, Los Osos.
Caught this Rockfish off a cliff using squid and 2 oz pyramid sinker. Casting near rock formations and avoiding big boulders to catch this guy. The weather was great this weekend and the surf wasn't to choppy. These fish are amazingly tasty.
Point Buchon State Marine Reserve
A wild stretch of coast between Montana de Oro State Park and the Diablo canyon power plant, controlled by PG and E, a wonderful place to walk and see nature in the raw and now protected.

I realized after I uploaded the video that it says Pro instead of Oro because it kept spell-checking
Montaña de Oro is a state park in California, United States. The park is located six miles southwest of Morro Bay and 2 miles south of Los Osos. The name Mountain of Gold comes from the golden wildflowers found in the park.

Rattlesnake Flats Trail
A great trail located in the Montana de Oro State Park near Los Osos, CA. Unfortunately, a portion of the trail was damaged in a recent fire.
Quarry Trail Morro Bay 12 29 13
From the Sea Pines Golf resort to the Quarry Trail, to Turri Road, and through Baywood Park for breakfast, then the Sweet Springs Nature Reserve and back to the resort. Much happier with the gopro mounted on the handlebar instead of my head.
Point Buchon Pinnacles
I had not made any dives in this area of the Pt Buchon Marine Protected area since before it was closed to fishing back on September 21st, 2007. It was always a very productive area, very full of life, and I imagined not much had changed.
It was about the same as I remembered it. Lots of big lingcod, vermilion rockfish and sheephead. Huge schools of blue rockfish, and every square inch of real estate covered in encrusting invertebrates. This is one of the few spots on the Central Coast of California where I have found the California hydrocoral in abundance.
Valencia Peak Montaña De Oro
Hey guys in today’s Central Coast adventure I bring you along for hike in Montaña De Oro. Valencia Peak rises over 1,347 feet from the coast. The ocean view from the top is truly remarkable, I hope you enjoy!

Montana De Oro State Park, Valencia Trial
Hiking at Montana De Oro State Park Valencia Trial.
This trial is the most challenging in this park. When you get to the top, it's spectacular. Excuse me for typing Valencia wrong on my video.
COON CREEK TRAIL
Coon Creek Trail is located in Montaña de Oro State Park at the south end of the park. Round trip is 5.02 miles. Most of the trail is shaded, and in the spring flowering native plants are abundant. In my opinion it is the most beautiful trail in the park.
The photo of the Cypress Tress on the old homestead site, at the end of the trail, was taken by Mike Baird in 2010.
The music is from Apple Inc and is available for use through iMovie.

The New Bluff Trail - Montaña de Oro State Park
The Bluff Trail in Montaña de Oro State Park, Calif. has been widened and reconfigured to make it readily and safely accessible to all visitors. The new trail may be wider than the old trail, but the sights and thunderous sounds of the relentless surf are the same.
OTB4MTB | Backside of Hazard to Manzanita | Montana de Oro, CA
The first descent of the day did not disappoint. We hit up an old favorite of mine - the trails of Montana de Oro State Park - in Los Osos California. This time I was determined to do what I call the full pull. For many locals this consists of Up Hazard Peak, down the backside to Manzanita (the DH of that is this video) and onward to East Boundary to Islay Creek Rd. and then on to the Oats Peak out and back trail head. I'm not a fan of that route. East Boundary ends quick and then is Islay Creek Rd back out. My preferred way is to do the kite, loop back from Manzanita, return to the top of Hazard by climbing up the trail of the backside and the descending back to the parking lot via the Hazard Peak trail. That Hazard Peak DH is so much fun. 3.1 miles of an average 6% grade. Ripping speeds, and huge smiles.
There should be more clips from the day to follow.
