AUSCHWITZ II, the German Nazi extermination camp (Poland), a complete tour
SUBSCRIBE: - A full tour and documentary of Auschwitz II the extermination camp including all of the important sites and places within the camp with a description of each as I walk around this huge and very sad place.
The victories of Operation Barbarossa in the summer and fall of 1941 against Hitler's new enemy, the Soviet Union, led to dramatic changes in Nazi anti-Jewish ideology and the profile of prisoners brought to Auschwitz. Construction on Auschwitz II-Birkenau began in October 1941 to ease congestion at the main camp. Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, head of the Schutzstaffel (SS), intended the camp to house 50,000 prisoners of war, who would be interned as forced laborers. Plans called for the expansion of the camp first to house 150,000 and eventually as many as 200,000 inmates. An initial contingent of 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war arrived at Auschwitz I in October 1941, but by March 1942 only 945 were still alive, and these were transferred to Birkenau, where most of them died from disease or starvation by May. By this time Hitler had decided to annihilate the Jewish people, so Birkenau was repurposed as a combination labor camp/extermination camp. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum estimates that 1.3 million people, 1.1 million of them Jewish, were sent to the camp during its existence.

Planning a trip to Krakow? Save up to $45 on your first AirBnb booking:
●
The Socialist Realist suburb of Nowa Huta is an interesting place to check out if you're visiting Krakow.
This unique neighborhood in Krakow is one of only two entirely pre-planned socialist realist cities in the world.
Wandering around Nowa Huta you'll find wide, tree-lined streets, lakes, parks, old churches, and plenty of communist architecture showcasing the deliberate social engineering done here.
Right now more than 200,000 people live in Nowa Huta and it's one of the most populous areas of Krakow.
To get to Nowa Huta take the Tram 4 from the Krakow Old Town. Get off at Plac Centralny, the Central Square in Nowa Huta.
It takes a few hours to explore all of the different things to do in Nowa Huta. It's definitely worth checking out, especially if you're interested in architecture and communist history.

Warsaw, Poland - Walking on Krakowskie Przedmieście (Kraków suburb - Krakauer Vorstadt)
Krakowskie Przedmieście (literally Kraków suburb) is one of the best known and most prestigious streets of Poland's capital Warsaw, surrounded by historical palaces, churches and manor-houses.
Krakowskie Przedmieście Royal Avenue constitutes the northernmost part of Warsaw's Royal Route, and links the Old Town and Royal Castle (at Castle Square) with some of the most notable institutions in Warsaw, including – proceeding southward – the Presidential Palace, Warsaw University, and the Polish Academy of Sciences headquartered in the Staszic Palace. The immediate southward extension of Krakowskie Przedmieście along the Royal Route is ulica Nowy Świat (New World Street).
