Old Polk County Courthouse & Museum, Bartow. The Old Polk County Courthouse, constructed in 1908-1909, is the third and last courthouse constructed on this location and now houses the very extensive collections of the Polk County Historical Museum and Historical and Genealogical Library.

Driving through Bartow, Florida on US 17
Bartow is the county seat of Polk County, Florida, United States. Founded in 1851 as Fort Blount, the city was renamed in honor of Francis S. Bartow, the first brigade commander to die in combat during the American Civil War. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Census, the city had a population of 15,340 and an estimated population of 16,959 in 2009. It is part of the Lakeland−Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 584,383 in 2009. As of 2016, the mayor of Bartow is Trish Pfeiffer.
Located near the source of the Peace River, Bartow is approximately 39 miles (63 km) east of the Tampa Bay Area and 50 miles (80 km) southwest of the Greater Orlando area. The city is near the center of Lightning Alley and has frequent afternoon thunderstorms in the summer, but typically has sunny and mild winters. Government, mining, and agriculture are the major sectors of the area's economy. The primary roads in the Bartow area are U.S. Route 17, U.S. Route 98 and State Road 60, which provide access to locations throughout Central Florida.
The official city nickname is the City of Oaks and Azaleas. Three districts within the city are on the National Register of Historical Places. Other historic landmarks include the Old Polk County Courthouse built in 1909 and Bartow High School, formerly Summerlin Institute, the oldest high school in the county. The current school within the school, Summerlin Academy, is named in honor of the former school name. Although Bartow has been eclipsed in population, importance and name recognition by other cities in the county, particularly Lakeland and Winter Haven, the city has retained its small city heritage and its distinctive Southern culture. Driving around Fort Meade, Florida
Fort Meade is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,691 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 5,761. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for George Meade, at the time an Army lieutenant serving in Florida following the Second Seminole War. Fort Meade is home to Fort Meade Middle-Senior High School, several historic buildings, Streamsong resort and Patterson Park. The area is popular with kayakers and canoers.
Concrete Intersection - SR 60 & US 98, Bartow, FL
The SR 60 & US 98 intersection was experiencing maintenance issues as the in place asphalt pavement was not able to withstand the traffic of 30K trucks per day. FDOT decided to replace the intersection with concrete which will increase its longevity and decrease maintenance costs. The intersection was also widened to reduce congestion.

Episode #9 is about the early settlers of Kathleen, FL. It has linkage to Heritage Trails #8 in that Socrum Cemetery is the resting place of many of the early members of Bethel Church, next to which, it sits.

The state of Florida and especially Polk County has strong military ties in the present and the past. According to a Veterans Day Census Survey, more than 1.5 million veterans reside in the sunshine state, each proud of their service, and willing to tell you about it. The Polk County History Center has developed an exhibition to collaborate with the State’s Victory Florida goal marking the 70 year anniversary of V-Day, or Victory Day, which marked the end of World War II in 1945. One proud Floridian, Dave Groves, tells us about his contribution to the World War II. Located at 100 East Main Street in Bartow, the history center is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The “Victory Florida” exhibition will run through September.
