Hey guys, today we are going to look at a fantastic ancient structure called Vatadage in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. This entire place was completely in ruins and was covered with dirt until 1903 when archeologists began excavating this site and found this structure. This circular structure you see, is considered the pinnacle of Sri Lankan architecture and is estimated to be at least 800 years old. It has some of the most beautiful carvings in all of Sri Lanka. But it is not just the beauty of the site that has attracted experts and tourists, it has an ancient secret hidden inside. All archeologists and historians confirm that something special is buried underneath this structure. Some claim this is the tooth of Lord Buddha. Some say it is his begging bowl and others say it is a single strand of hair from the head of Buddha. Whatever it was, it must have been something very important. Why was this structure deliberately buried under a mound of dirt? When the excavation work began in 1903, archeologists noted that it had been intentionally covered by a mound of dirt to make sure no one would find out what was buried underneath. So, whatever is buried underneath this structure, must have some significant value. But what is it?
Perhaps the clue lies in the statues of Buddha. Inside the structure, there are four statues of Buddha situated exactly at the four cardinal direction points. The hands of Buddha show something important. Around the world, almost all ancient Buddhas hands are empty, but in this site, there is something strange. Look at his hands. Do you see this? What is this? Perhaps the sculptors made a mistake while sculpting this particular statue, but no.. this is a different statue and again ..look at his hands. This is found on all the four Buddha statues. This is definitely a scroll containing some kind of text. We can clearly see that it is a cylindrical roll of cloth or paper which had some type of writing.
This is actually a spectacular find: Ancient Buddha Statues holding a scroll. Most people think Buddhism is a simple religion which only focuses on meditation to enlighten the mind. However, ancient Buddhism contains many mystical secrets and focused on advanced technological devices.
What could this scroll have and why is it being held by Lord Buddha himself? Remember, ancient civilizations used symbolism and pictorial representations as clues, this is why all ancient builders carved figures, instead of texts. We still do it today, to a certain extent. In important situations, we resort to putting up pictures rather than words so anyone can understand what's going on. So in order to find out what would have been written in this scroll, the best clues would be found in the structure itself. Let us examine the architecture of the structure. In Sri Lanka, there are usually Stupas, these huge bell like structures. However, the Vatadage has a very unique design. From the outside , it has a circular design, but the top view of the structure reveals something fantastic. It looks like a complex technical diagram to the naked eye, but it is remarkably similar to mount Meru. Now, what is mount Meru? According to Buddhism and Hinduism, mount Meru contains the key to open all physical and spiritual universes. It has as a turtle shaped base with a complex pyramid like structure on top. If you look at the floor plan of Vatadage, it looks identical to a turtle and archaeologists confirm a structure similar to Meru once existed on top of this base.
Is it possible that the scroll Buddha is holding contains some information about Mount Meru? More importantly, is this scroll buried underneath the structure? Where can we find out more information about the Buddhist scrolls which talk about Mount Meru? Such ancient texts were secretly transported to Mogao caves of China , where Buddhist monks stored the scrolls in various caves. In 1907, an explorer by the name of Aurel Stein managed to open a sealed chamber in Mogao caves which contained 50,000 manuscripts in various languages.
Among them is a 2nd century Buddhist diagram of this cosmic mountain called Mount Meru – This is considered the oldest and original form of Mount Meru, but it doesn't look like a mountain, what we see is a device which seems to connect earth and heaven. The actual manuscripts are seldom revealed on the internet, I am only able to get a low quality picture. It looks like a pointed device coming out on top of a circular vessel at the bottom. Recently, the diagram caught the attention of a scientist who works for Northrop-Grumman . Northrop-Grumman is a company which develops advanced weapons for the US military.

Polonnaruwa පොළොන්නරුව Sri Lanka
L'histoire de Polonnaruwa - Kingdom of Polonnaruwa

After the fall of Anuradhapura, the northern part of the island became a province of Chola. The Cholas then founded a new capital now called Polonnaruwa southeast of Anuradhapura
In 1070, the Sinhalese king Vijaya Bahu I managed to liberate Anuradhapura from the reign of Chola, but the Tamil community remains obviously established in its traditional areas, especially in the north.
Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura by the will of King Vijayabahu who reunited the country in 1070. Nevertheless, even though Vijayabahu made Polonnaruwa the capital of Sri Lanka, the true hero of Polonnaruwa is his grandson Parakramabahu to whom we owe the golden age of Polonnaruwa.

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka
Video with images of ancient monuments in Polonnaruwa a former capital of the Sinhalese kingdom in the northeast plain of central Sri Lanka.
South of the ancient city wall is a water reservoir with a group of monuments from the twelfth century. One of these monuments is an image of a human person with a beard and moustache. This person has a full face, big forehead and round belly. The garment around his waist is tied in a knot. The object in his hands is presumably a book. This realistic image of a human person differs from other images which in general represent an idealized or stylized Buddha figure. It is not exactly clear who this image must represent. Some say that the image is an Indian guru or sage. Others think that it is king Parakramabahu who reigned the kingdom in the middle of the twelfth century.
Within the ancient city wall near his royal palace is an audience hall where king Parakramabahu managed all public administration and legislation. Here he presided meetings with his ministers and prominent citizens. Here were also public lectures and ceremonies. The audience hall consists of terraces with reliefs of sculpted elephants and lions which are all represented in different positions. The reliefs of the upper terrace depict round bellied dwarfs or ganna as a symbol of prosperity. At the top of the staircase which leads to the entrance are two giant lions. Stone columns on top of the audience hall used to carry a wooden roof. Each column has an inscription with the name of a minister who used to sit in a chair near the pillar.
North of the palace complex is a quadrangular fenced terrace with other monuments. The Vatadage built by king Parakramabahu is a round image house on a platform. The platform wall is decorated with reliefs of animals, flowers and dwarfs. Four staircases with a guardstone on both sides and a moon stone at the foot lead to an entrance where Buddha sits with his back against a central dagoba. Opposite the Vatadage are two temples for the tooth relic of Buddha. The Atadage was built by Parakramabahu's predecessor king Vijayabahu. Only some pillars and a statue of Buddha remain. The Hatadage was built by Prakaramabahu's successor king Nissanka Malla. A wall with a staircase remains, as well as a guard stone and three Buddha statues. The adjacent Latha Mandapaya was built by king Nissanka Malla. It is a square pavilion with a latticed stone fence. In the middle of the platform is a small dagoba encircled by stone pillars shaped like lotus stalks. Next to these temples is the Gal Pota which was presumably made by king Nissanka Malla. The sides of this large stone book show reliefs of elephants that sprinkle the goddess of prosperity with water. The nearby Satmahal Prasada is a red brick image house in the shape of a stepped pyramid with six diminishing stories. At the outside are niches with remains of divine images. Close to the fenced terrace is a Hindu temple from the thirteenth century. This Shiva Devale temple has Tamil inscriptions and a styled lingam. The temple shows the return of Indian influences in the latter days of the Polonnaruwa kingdom.
North of the ancient city wall is another group of monuments. One of these monuments is the Rankot Vihara a dagoba which was built by king Nissanka Malla. The dagoba has a dome of earth fill covered by a brick mantle and plaster coating. At the foot is an image house and altars. The Gal Vihara is a rock temple from the middle of the twelfth century with three giant Buddha images which were all cut from one long slab of granite rock. They were part of a monastery built by king Parakramabahu. At the left is a seated Buddha in meditation. On the background are rock sculptures of a gate and buildings. Then comes a simple portico which leads to an image house in the rock. Next is a standing Buddha with his hands crossed in front of his breast. Presumably this is Buddha after reaching enlightenment or a pupil that mourns for the death of his teacher. At the right is an image of a reclining Buddha. His head rests on a pillow with the symbol of a sun wheel. It is the image of a dying Buddha who enters nirvana.

Polonnaruwa Vatadage (circular house of relic) Dalada Maluwa (hall of relic) is an ancient structure in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Parakramabahu I to hold the Relic of the tooth of the Buddha or during the reign of Nissanka Malla of Polonnaruwa to hold the alms bowl used by the Buddha.

Theories vary among archaeologists and historians regarding who built the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, and when. One such theory suggests that it was built by Parakramabahu I during his reign in the 12th century. The Culavamsa, an ancient chronicle, mentions that he built a circular stone shrine to hold the tooth relic of the Buddha. Archaeologist Harry Charles Purvis Bell believed that this shrine is the Polonnaruwa Vatadage. This is contradicted by several ancient sources of the island, including Rajavaliya and Poojavaliya, which mention that it was built by Nissanka Malla. However, according to the studies of Arthur Maurice Hocart, Nissanka Malla only renovated an already existing building and made some additions such as the entrance and outer porch. Wilhelm Geiger, who translated the ancient Mahavamsa, and historian H. W. Codrington both agree with this theory. A nearby stone inscription set by Nissanka Malla lists the Vatadage among his constructions. In this, he claims that it was built by one of his generals under his own direction.
A unique feature of architecture of ancient Sri Lanka, vatadages were built for the protection of small stupas that had an important relic enshrined in them or were built on hallowed ground. If the Polonnaruwa Vatadage is the shrine built by Parakramabahu I, the relic of the tooth of the Buddha would have been enshrined within it. Another possibility is that the alms bowl used by the Buddha may have been enshrined here. Both these relics were important objects in ancient Sri Lankan culture, and would have made the Polonnaruwa Vatadage one of the most significant and venerated buildings in the country.
The Kingdom of Polonnaruwa ended in 1215 with an invasion from South India. The Polonnaruwa Vatadage appears to have been abandoned with the fall of the kingdom, and there is no mention of it in the chronicles in later periods. It was not until 1903 that the Department of Archaeology began excavation work at the site under Bell, who noted that it was only a mound of earth at the time.
