The Story - Kumbakarna Lina (A story from Epic Ramayana)
“Kumbakarna Lina” is a part of the epic Ramayana. Rama (an avatar - incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu), is the exiled Prince of Ayodya whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon King Rahwana of Alengka. This story talks about the war between Rama, the personification of good and Rahwana, who is evil. Kumbakarna is Rahwana's brother, a powerful demon, yet a noble warrior who obeys his King unquestioningly and dies waging war against Rama, even though he knows his King is in the wrong to have abducted another man's wife.
The act opens with Rahwana getting more and more desperate to marry Queen Sita, who he has kidnapped and imprisoned in Taman Asoka, Alengka, as Sita continues to rebuff him and evade his advances. Hanoman, the monkey messenger of Rama has created havoc and set Alengka ablaze. Rama in the meantime, helped by his army of monkeys successfully built a bridge to Alengka, crossed over and declared war. Prahasta, Rahwana’s war minister has been killed and his armies have fearfully withdrawn from battle. There is a lull in the battle while Rama and the monkey army are now unopposed. Now a paranoid Rahwana has his brother, Kumbhakarna, awakened from deep slumber and demands that he assume leadership of the Alengka forces.
Kumbakarna initially disagrees with Rahwana who wants to get Queen Sita to be wife forcibly, but finally has no choice but to obey his King. Thus upholding the pride of his country and his King and safeguarding his people, a reluctant Kumbakarna goes to war.
The battle with King Rama is resumed with Kumbhakarna leading the Alengka forces. The swarming monkeys cannot contain the powerful Kumbhakarna and what ensues is a long battle where Rama and Laksmana are compelled to make use of their fearsome weapons in the face of Kumbhakarna's formidable strength. Kumbhakarna receives many mortal wounds, but continues to wage war, and ultimately falls to the ground, severely injured yet alive.
Kumbhakarna’s, brother Wibisana who had chosen to forsake his evil brother Rahwana, is an ally of Rama, discovers him in this helpless state and is filled with compassion and sadness, Wibisana then begs Rama for forgiveness on behalf of Kumbhakarna and appeals that Kumbhakarna be allowed to die the death of a true warrior and be saved from a slow, painful death and send his soul to heaven.-------- -
Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet Play in Pengosekan)
Wayang is a generic word, referring to all the traditional forms of theatre in Indonesia. The more precise term Wayang Kulit indicates the shadow puppet theatre that has so far been very popular in Central Java and many other South-East Asia regions. It is believed that Wayang was brought to South-East Asia from India around the 1st Century CE, when Hinduism penetrated the whole region. The first record of a Wayang performance is an inscription dated 930 CE that says si Galigi mawayang, an itinerant performer who performed on the story of Bhima's sacrifice from the epic Mahabharata during a special royal occasion.
Wayang Kulit is a unique form of theatre employing puppets, light and shadows. The puppets are crafted from water buffalo hide and mounted on sticks, made of water buffalo horn, wood or bamboo. When held up and moved behind a large stretch of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as light source, shadows are cast on the screen. The plays are invariably based on romantic tales, adaptations of the classic Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Some of the plays may be improvised to include local flavors. It is up to the conductor, or dalang, or master puppeteer, to decide.
The Dalang is the director and the narrator of the entire performance. He sits behind the screen and narrates the story. A traditional orchestra plays in the background adding value to the plot through melody and rhythm, while he modulates his voice to create suspense during the drama. Invariably, the play ends with the triumph of Good over Evil.

Pemut presents a fusion of dance styles including Middle Eastern, Salsa, Balinese, and Javanese. The music was composed by Joko Sutrisno in 2007. Bubaran Udan Mas is a very short piece played in what is called “loud style.” Its customary use at the end of a program is intended to leave the audience with the joyous sound of gamelan ringing in their ears. Performed by the St. Olaf Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, Sumunar Gamelan Music and Dance Ensembles, and St. Olaf Veselica International Dance Ensemble at the Inaugural Kyai Kumbul Concert on May 12, 2019 at Wagner-Bundgaard Studio One, Center for Art and Dance.

Gamelan Lesson by Music Temple
Gamelan is traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments are metallophones played by mallets as well as a set of hand played drums called Kendhang which register the beat. Other instruments include xylophones, bamboo flutes, bowed instrument called rebab, and even vocalists called sindhen. Gamelan is still commonly played in formal occasions and in many traditional Indonesian ceremonies.
