More info on Port Macquarie from Wikipedia:
Port Macquarie is a coastal town in the local government area of Port Macquarie-Hastings. It is located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, about 390 km (242 mi) north of Sydney, and 570 km (354 mi) south of Brisbane.
The town is located on the Tasman Sea coast, at the mouth of the Hastings River, and at the eastern end of the Oxley Highway (B56). The town with its suburbs had a population of 45,698 in June 2016.
The site of Port Macquarie was first visited by Europeans in 1818 when John Oxley reached the Pacific Ocean from the interior, after his journey to explore inland New South Wales. He named the location after the Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.
Oxley noted that the port abounds with fish, the sharks were larger and more numerous than I have ever before observed. The forest hills and rising grounds abounded with large kangaroos and the marshes afford shelter and support to innumerable wild fowl.
Independent of the Hastings River, the area is generally well watered, there is a fine spring at the very entrance to the Port.
In 1821, Port Macquarie was founded as a penal settlement, replacing Newcastle as the destination for convicts who had committed secondary crimes in New South Wales. Newcastle, which had fulfilled this role for the previous two decades, had lost the features required for a place for dumping irredeemable criminals, that being isolation, which was lost as the Hunter Region was opened up to farmers, and large amounts of hard labour, which had diminished as the cedar in the area ran out and the settlement grew in size.
Port Macquarie, however, with its thick bush, tough terrain and local aborigines that were keen to return escaping prisoners in return for tobacco and blankets, provided large amounts of both isolation and hard labour to keep the criminals in control.
Under its first commandant, Francis Allman, who was fond of flogging, the settlement became a hell, where the convicts had limited liberties, especially in regard to being in possession of letters and writing papers, which could get a convict up to 100 lashes.
The Penal settlement lasted from April 1820 to c. 15 August 1830.
The settlement peaked with 1500 convicts by 1825 but by 1828 this had fallen to 530. The commanders of the settlement were:
Francis Allman March 1821 – 1824
Captain Rolland succeeded Allman in April 1824
Lieutenant Carmac, 1824
Henry Gillman in January 1824–
Archibald Clunes Innes 1826–1827
Because of the lack of liberties of the settlement, Governor Ralph Darling quickly sent there many 'specials' or literate convicts with a decent education who had voiced negative views about him.
Later on in the settlement's history, in the 1830s, disabled convicts started to arrive. One-armed men would be grouped together and required to break stones, men with wooden legs would become delivery men, and the blind would often be given tasks during the night which they performed more skilfully than those with sight.
In 1823 the first sugar cane to be cultivated in Australia was planted there. The region was first opened to settlers in 1830 and later on in the decade the penal settlement was closed in favour of a new penal settlement at Moreton Bay. Settlers quickly took advantage of the area's good pastoral land, timber resources and fisheries.
St Thomas's Anglican Church is a Georgian building designed by Francis Greenway and built, under the supervision of military engineer Lieutenant T. Owen, by convicts from 1824 to 1828. This church is among the oldest in Australia and one of the few remaining convict-built churches. Inside there are red cedar box pews that were peculiar to that period in church architecture.
The Walker pipe organ is the only one of its type in the southern hemisphere. The castellated tower permits excellent views of the coastline, town and river. This church is now classified by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and has been registered on the National Estate heritage list.
In 1830 Major Archibald Clunes Innes built Lake Innes House which grew over the next decade into a luxurious establishment and attracted many notable visitors.
Hope you learnt something new mates catch you soon!
Port Macquarie - A brief Early History
Port Macquarie was settled as a convict settlement in 1821. There is still evidence of these early times in this beautifully situated city on the NSW coast.

hi folks welcome to another built. Today I'm looking at what could be the most intact Georgian town the british empire established anywhere in the world. I'm at Oatlands in the Australian state of Tasmania and I'm asking the question, is economic stagnation the best way to preserve old buildings.
In 1810 Lachlan Macquarie took up the position of Governor of New South Wales and only a year later was in Tasmania surveying the country. This is what he found - grassland and open forest that could be immediately populated with sheep.
By the 1830's Oatlands had been established on on the banks of Lake Dulverton and the ample supply of sandstone ensured that the town would be built out of it. In those early years the town received a large number of public facilities including a gaol, court house, churches etc
Whilst Oatlands is surrounded by some of the best fine merino country in Australia but it does not have a diverse production base. Thirty minutes up the road is Campbell Town the third of the towns recommended by Lachlan Macquaire. Its sits on the edge of some of the best broad acre river flat cropping country in Australia so the bulk of rural infrastructure was attracted there.
During the years from 1830 to 1876 Oatlands had been a main stop of the coaching route between Hobart and Launceston and it was during these years that many of the private sandstone buildings were built including a large number of inns and lodging houses. With the coming of the main train line this all stopped. The train line passed well to the east of Oatlands leaving the town quite and isolated. A branch line was built but not being on the main line meant a sluggish micro economy.
With the advent of the motor car Oatlands again become a stop for traffic between the north and south. But again the town was eventually bypassed and today the traffic races pass leaving the main street very quite.
So a combination of land that is predominatly sheep country the by passing of the railway and the bypassing of the road has resulted a slow economic history.
In the 1960's the town began to attract attention for its intact colonial Georgian architecture. Higher wages in the cities and an increase in leisure time meant middle class people were becoming more interested in their past. The 1970's saw a fascination with family histories and for the first time finding a convict in the family was something to be celebrated. The Scenery Preservation Board and later the National Trust took up the challenge to protect the built history.
With increased leisure time the tourism industry slowly become established. It was the tourist that offered a new opportunity for towns that progress had left behind. This occurred in most developed countries around the world.
In an irony it is the very lack of economic development that presents the opportunity for a new form of development.
But the new, lets call it restoration development was very as slow to happen. The fantastic operating flour mill Callington mill is the product of up to forty years of planing, reports, studies, conservation plans, funding applications, business plans, unrealized dreams, disappointment and only very recently realization.
Is economic decline the best method of preservation? have your say - make a comment. My next two posts are in production - one will look at what I believe is the most sustainable building material and the other will look at an ugly building. Raging bushfires in west Sydney, Australia
Emergency warnings have been issued in two areas of western Sydney as bushfires threaten to engulf homes and properties. Fast moving fires near Castlereagh and Windsor are being fanned by strong, warm northerly winds and temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius.
Aerial television footage showed fire fighters dropping water from helicopters to control the flames which have already burned several outbuildings. The University of Western Sydney has sent its students home because of power outages caused by the fires.
There have not been reports of any casualties. Report by Mark Morris.

Police raid in Australia finds arsenal of firearms, grenade launcher and mines
BREAKING NEWS — Online purchases of firearms-related items put a home in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, on police radar. Then Australian Border Force officers at the Sydney International Mail Gateway intercepted a number of mail items containing firearm parts. A search warrant was executed on Dec. 5, 2018. During the search, officers seized five long-arm firearms, including a working and loaded grenade launcher, two sound-and-flash grenades, one gas propelled anti-personal mine, seven gas-propelled grenade-type canisters, various calibres of ammunition, body armour and camouflage gear. A 49-year-old man was arrested and he was refused bail. Police are warning citizens to be careful and aware of what can and cannot be imported into Australia, even if it is ordered through an Australian company.
ABF Investigations Superintendent Garry Low said the detection highlights the commitment of the ABF and partner agencies. “We have significant intelligence capabilities to detect online purchases of firearms and accessories and through our investigations we have located a number,” Superintendent Low said. “People need to be aware of the regulations around importing these items into Australia and that the ABF will investigate and take action against anyone found to be illicitly bringing them into the country.”

EVP - Port Arthur, Tasmania 2016
Clear footage of a ghost EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) filmed on 30th September 2016 on a trip to the Port Arthur Historic Site.
My girlfriend and I were walking around on our own in the east building of the penitentiary and it was only that night we found this clear voice in the clip I had filmed earlier. The voice appears at around 0:21. We hear Davis. What do you think is said?
