Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Mura Venete
Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Mura Venete
The Venetian walls of Bergamo are an imposing architectural construction dating back to the sixteenth century , well preserved, not having undergone, in the centuries, no war event. This wall consists of 14 ramparts , 2 platforms, 32 garnis (of which only one has come down to us), 100 openings for guns, two dustbins, 4 doors ( Sant'Agostino , San Giacomo , undoubtedly the most beautiful and panoramic view, Sant'Alessandro and San Lorenzo , the latter also known as Porta Garibaldi). To all this there is to add a myriad of sorties and military passages of which, in part, the memory has been lost.
The ramparts, externally, give the city an aspect of impregnable fortress, but since they were built in the second half of the 500, the emergence of the cannon parabolic bomb bomb makes it in fact the song of the swan of this type of military buildings. The hills on which high Bergamo developed developed, since ancient times, a considerable strategic-military importance for its orographic conformation but especially because it is a crossroads between the eastern part of the Po Valley, particularly Friuli , and central Europe .
The construction of the fortress began in 1331 , on the hill of Sant'Eufemia, under the orders of Guglielmo di Castelbarco, vicar of Giovanni del Lussemburgo, was continued and completed by the Visconti when they succeeded him in the dominion over Bergamo.
The Visconti further fortified the fortress, aware of its strategic importance in the military arena that saw them as opposed to Venice . To increase their defensive function they built a new military complex on the San Giovanni hill , the Cittadella, according to a defensive project that saw the two works integrated into the same function and enclosed the old city in a fortified enclosure. The Cittadella was an imposing and vast work, including the part built on the San Giovanni hill, still accessible, even the area to the west, now occupied by the bishop's seminary .
The defensive system of the city of Bergamo was completed by the so-called Muraine , the walls built by the Visconti, lords of Milan, completed in the years around 1350 and expanded already by 1375, which descending from the hills where the old city is located with a wide path they defended the villages that had developed over the centuries along the lines that connected Bergamo to the towns and to the neighboring towns.
Venice in 1428 succeeded the Visconti in the dominion over Bergamo and proceeded to expand the defensive system of which the city was equipped. He enhanced the fortress by adding the tower, still existing, and completed its defensive function with the construction of a belt of ramparts , commonly known as the Venetian walls , 6200 meters long, which surrounded the upper city transforming it into a fortress. The walls were built by the Republic of Venice in the city of Bergamo from 1561 and completed in 1588 , when the orobic city represented the western end of the Venetian dominions on the mainland.
The structure, which over the years has undergone few changes, has a development of six kilometers and two hundred meters, outside of which was the so-called covered road , or a walkway protected by walls, used by patrols placed at guard. The height of the walls in some places reached fifty meters, below which there were ditches, not filled with water, placed to protect.
The walls are made up of 14 ramparts, 2 platforms, 32 garnis (of which only one has come down to us), 100 openings for guns, two powderpots, 4 doors Sant'Agostino , San Giacomo , Sant'Alessandro and San Lorenzo , now named after Giuseppe Garibaldi). To all this there is to add a myriad of sorties, underground rooms and military passages of which, in part, the memory is lost, connected to each other through an unknown number of tunnels.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Palazzo del Podesta
Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Palazzo del Podesta
The Palazzo del Podestà is a historic building in the city of Bergamo, is part of the network of the Museum of stories in Bergamo managed by the Bergamo Foundation in history. The building, for centuries called Hospitium potestatis , is located in Piazza Vecchia, former Piazza Nuova. The ancient staircase connects it to the great room of the Capriate of the Palazzo della Ragione ; the northernmost part of the façade opens onto Piazza Duomo in front of the Basilica of Sant'Alessandro . The palace includes the bell tower .
The history of the Palazzo del Podestà follows the history of Bergamo. Its position is divided between two squares: Piazza Vecchia, bureaucratic and administrative headquarters with the Palazzo della Ragione , and Piazza Duomo, the clerical seat with the church of San Vincenzo and Sant'Alessandro , the Congregation of Mercy Maggiore , makes it a significant part of the city.
It was built in the twelfth century by the Ghibelline faction family of Suardi, the notarial deeds named it as Palazzo ex Zentilino Suardo and used as a residential building. The bloody struggles between the faction or Guelph or Ghibelline town families, led the Suardi family to lose ownership of the palace that became the Hospitium potestatis , owned by the municipality and residence of the podestà up to the fourteenth century .
The building underwent a first fire in 1360 which required restoration. In a notarial deed of 1442, there was a change of ownership to the Avogadro brothers, who sold a part of it to the Congregation of Greater Mercy. After 1428 with the Venetian rule , it changed the appearance of the city and the destination of the different buildings. The building was enlarged, an entrance to the square was opened and the external staircase connected to the hall of the Capriate of the Palazzo della Ragione. and took the name of the palace of the Jurists , with this name the southern part of the civic tower is still identified .
In 2012, the historic interactive museum of the Venetian age was set up in the halls of the building, part of the Bergamo Foundation in non-profit history. Following a path that is divided into seven rooms, there is a historical period that since 1492 , the year of the discovery of America and its commercial development, leads to the knowledge of the Republic of Venice, its power and its trade.
In the interactive rooms we are transported in the Middle Ages, through a journey that leads from Venice to Bergamo, a visit that helps to interact in the sixteenth century, meeting the places and characters who made the history of Bergamo of those years. The city represented in the sixteenth century , accompanies the visitor to the construction of the Venetian walls and the destruction of churches and monasteries that were an obstacle to their construction, such as the church of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna and the monastery of Santo Stefano reaching up to Porta Sant ' Alexander , with the colors and sounds of the great fair that was outside the walls, and that came up to the walls.
