Ty's Great British Adventure - Portishead
Ty Pennington takes on the town's run-down swimming pool to give it an extreme-style makeover.
Responding to a plea for help from the townsfolk of Portishead, Ty rolls into town on a mission to rebuild the community's much-loved outdoor swimming pool. Devastated by the council's decision to close the pool, locals lobbied to get it re-opened and back to its former glory. The man to make that wish come true is Extreme Makeover's Mr Ty Pennington. But first, there's a heap of work to be done.
Ty, his crew and the local have only seven days to compelte this massive project to a very tight budget. The pool needs to be cleared of debris, the changing rooms transformed, a children's wet play area built, solar heating fitted, and the whole place redecorated, and eventually the pool will take a numbers of days to fill up and heat.
Can the community of Portishead come together to help Ty finish this mammoth task and restore their old swimming pool to its former glory?

Portishead Open Air Pool Refurbishment - Spring 2017
Our 55 year old lido was leaking and the tiles and scum channels badly needed repairing. The pool plant also dated back to the 1960s. Our major refurbishment this spring included skimmers to replace the scum channels, a new butyl tank liner, underwater lights, and new plant filters and pipework to meet current standards. The work was carried out by CP Pools and the plant room was refurbished by DG Pools. We recorded the transformation with two timelapse cameras and used them to create this film along with extra video clips. Special thanks to Ben Maliphant (benm.photo) who converted the timelapse into video clips, and Stuart Walsh (SASI films) who produced the finished video.
Portishead Open Air Pool 2017 Campaign
The Trustees and Volunteers are appealing to the local community to help secure funds for vital repair work to the swimming pool.
The total cost is in the region of £250,000.
Most of that money has already been saved from previous successful seasons and the target amount to raise is £25,000. If everyone in the community who values the pool were to give just a pound that target would be easily reached.
Portishead Open Air Pool in the 60s
Family home movie - kindly given to the pool by the Seeley family. Footage of Portishead Open Air Pool in the 1960s. It can be dated by the willow hurdle fencing which was replaced by a perimeter wall not long after the Pool opened in 1962. Notice the tanker delivering hot water from the Albright and Wilson factory - these deliveries also ceased in the 1960s and oil boilers installed at the pool. Right at the end is footage of the little girl running across the grass in front of the Lake Grounds cafe in its original location opposite the rowing boat sheds. If anyone can date the footage more accurately please let us know at info@portisheadopenairpool.org.uk
