Check out how to do Porto like a local! Eat traditional pastries, drink world famous wine and walk across the historic Dom Luis I bridge.
Definitely add this city to your travel list and throw in a stop to Douro Valley if you can!
We'd recommend spending 3-4 days here. Most activities in the city are within walking distance of the Sé neighborhood.

PORTO: Discover The Picturesque City | Portugal Trip Part 4
We’re here to take you through the most picturesque city of Porto! Watch for beautiful drone views of the colorful townhouses & turquoise river. We also share 3 honest impressions of Porto before we show you more drone footage!
We started the day by wandering through the narrow streets of the medieval Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located by the Douro river. Here we found some of the best things to see in Porto, including the most iconic 75-metre Clérigos Tower.
Next we walked across the famous Dom Luís I Bridge to the Vila Nova de Gaia, a city on the other side of the river and a home to the cellars where all the Port wine is stored and aged. Of course we did some tasting of the local product. It wasn’t just an ordinary wine tasting, but coupled with chocolate pairings!
We also tried one of the best Porto attractions, a cable car connecting Gaia riverside promenade to the upper deck of D. Luis I bridge, where you can find the best views of the Porto's old town.
Porto is definitely one of the top places to visit in Portugal. For more interesting places to visit in Portugal, check out our other travel vlogs:

Our visit Porto travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to Portuguese cuisine, top sightseeing tourist attractions including visiting churches, monasteries, parks, wineries, bridges, quirky neighborhoods and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Porto tourism brochure, Porto itinerary or Porto city tour also known as Oporto, Portuguesa.
10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.
That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

Porto Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting Porto Portugal including the 8 best things to do in Porto. Highlights include: Porto's Wine Lodges including Sandemann and Offley, Telerifico de Gaia, Porto's famous sandwich, Sao Bento Train Station, Clergios Church Tower, Lello Bookstore, Riverfront Ribeira quarter, and the Stock Exchange Palace.
Porto is Portugal's 2nd largest city and is famous for Port Wine. Porto is built along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary, and its historical center was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. Porto is not as well known as Portugal's capital Lisbon, but Porto is becoming a tourist destination of it's own. In fact, Porto was named by Forbes Magazine as The City To Visit This Year in 2017.
Don't forget the traditional sandwich called Francesinha, which literally translated means little French lady. Porto is just about the only place in the world where you can find it. Essentially the Francesinha is toast with layers of meat inside (beef, pork meat, ham...). The sandwich is then covered with cheese and a spicy sauce, with the option of including french fries on top. The Francesinha has been considered one of the 10 best sandwiches in the World.
One of the most famous lodges in Porto is the Sandeman lodge. This lodge has been here since the middle of the 18th century. It was originally founded by a Scottish man who wanted to import the wines from Portugal to Britain. The tours are 6 Euro, you can turn up and hope they have a tour in your language. We're here in the morning at 11, they said we'd just missed an English tour at 10.30 and the next one's at 2.45. Apparently Sandeman has two sister wine sellers and they'll let you know when those have English tours. So the next English tour for us is at Offley at 12 o'clock and there is another one, the Ferreira just a little further down the street. So if you don't find a tour at the one you're going to, check out one of the other lodges.
For a unique view of the wine lodges and the river front of Porto take the Teleferico de Gaia. The views are truly terrific on the Teleferico. Ba - dum - tish! It takes you from wine lodge country up to the top of the bridge near the Metro Station. Tickets one way cost 5 Euro or 8 Euro for a round trip.
Porto's main street through the historic center is a big wide avenue that has the City Hall on top flanked by two roads on either side, reminiscent of Wenceslas Square in Prague. Even if you're not taking a train into or out of Porto it's worth a trip to the Sao Bento Train Station. It's a very beautiful train station, actually I think one of the most beautiful on the inside that I've been to, the lobby area at least, because it was decorated with these blue Portuguese tiles from 1910 and they're showing the history of transportation from horses to oxen to boats and even battles over there. You'll find a number of historic churches dotted around the town with decorative Portuguese blue tiles inside and in this case, outside the church. That blue tile decoration outside occurs on more than just one church.
For some of the best views of Porto climb up to the top of the Clerigos church tower. The tower itself isn't actually that tall but it is on the highest point of Porto making it a place for unobstructed views. You know, I say it's not that tall because I haven't climbed it yet. The total number of stairs, 197 to be exact. And actually the stair climb isn't too bad. It's slightly narrow but it takes about 10 minutes to get to the top, maybe even five if you do it quickly.
After the tower stop by at the Livraria Lello, a bookstore that was founded in 1881 and it's where people thought J.K. Rowling was inspired to write Harry Potter. It has to be the most elaborately decorated and designed bookstore I've ever seen and the staircase looks like something out of an M.C. Escher drawing. Very curvy.
The street right along the river, the Ribeira, or as I like to think of it, the Riviera. I don't think that's really what it's called but I'm going to call it that for this video. It's a great place to dine, there's a lot of restaurants here.
To see an interesting kind of private Palace in Porto, visit the Palacio da Bolsa, or the Stock Exchange Palace. This palace was completed in 1910 to be the Porto and North of Portugal Stock Exchange, built and owned by the Oporto Commercial Association.

We have been spending some time in the city of Porto, Portugal and to be honest we have been blown away by what you can get in terms of food for 6€! You get a full meal with wine & desert & café in a local restaurant. Now it's not going to be ultra refined cuisine but it is exactly what you want to try when travelling to Porto in order to experience the local cuisine.
- The First restaurant is actually no where listed on Google Maps... it is located 2 mn walk from a café called Epoca (where we got the 2 cakes). For 6€ one person got: soup + fish & side + wine (0,25l) + café + fruit or desert of the day.
- Cakes café was called Epicure. They also make their own bread which supposely delicious!
- Wine tasting in Porto - we went to try Port Wine at Burmeister. Super friendly guide. 10€ per person for tour + 2 wines. 15€ for 4 wines.
- Diner time. Local restaurant serving fish. You can have bacalhau and many other local dishes. Make sure the bacalhau has soaked long enough in the water - the server will tell you. Our dinner for four people ended up being 28€. See name & local in blog post. (Trina has it)

Top Things To Do in Porto 2019 4k
Hey Must Do Travels Tribe! Today, we are hitting up Porto, a coastal city in Portugal that is known for its bridges, cobblestone roads and incredible porto wine. Let’s go check it out!
Luis I Bridge
This double-decker bridge is an icon of the city of Porto. It runs across the River Douro linking the Port wineries in Vila Nova de Gaia with the buzzing downtown of Porto. The granite pillars of the original bridge built in 1881 are still in place to this day.
Porto Cathedral
The Porto Cathedral is a must do sight in Porto for its historical significance as well as being an architectural landmark of the city at the same time. The cathedral was built between the 12th and 13th century and remains the largest place of worship in Porto.
Clerigos
The Clérigos Church is a stunning church in the city of Porto. Its tall bell tower can be seen from various points of the city and is one of its most characteristic symbols of all of Porto.
Capela Das Almas
This Chapel, which is called the Chapel of Souls in english, is famous for its picturesque exterior of blue & white tiles painted with scenes from the lives of saints.
Jardins Do Palacio De Cristal
This stunning botanical garden is one of Porto’s best kept secrets. Here, you can find a mosaic of gorgeous small gardens that open up little by little as you walk around. You can also find amazing views of the city and the river.
Liberdade Square
The Liberdade Square, also known as Freedom Square, is the most important square in all of Porto as it connects the old town with the modern part of the city.
Mercado Temporario do Bolhao
The centenary Market of Bolhão (MB) is the most symbolic market of the city of Porto and one of the most famous in Portugal. It has been in renovations since May 2018 and will be for the next 2 years. In the meantime, it is located in the Temporary Market of Bolhão, only two minutes away from the original market.
Praca Da Ribeira
Down by the River Douro, you will find narrow streets that open out onto a plaza surrounded by tiled townhouses overlooking the stunning river. From here you have beautiful views of the port-wine lodges across the river.

A Weekend in Porto, Portugal
Our quick weekend trip to Porto, Portugal from December 6-8, 2019. We experienced the must-sees (including a Fado show, river tour, and Port winery tour) and the must-eats (pastel de nata or Portuguese egg tart, Franceshina sandwich, and Porto-style tripe and white bean stew) and so much more.
