Your journey begins at Wappocomo Station, situated next to a charming homestead and a sprawling view of the mountains. Enjoy the sounds of vintage diesels as they lead you through beautiful pastures and farms dating back to the 1700s.
As you wind along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you’ll enter a visually striking gorge known as the Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, the Trough is home to American bald eagles.

The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad
The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad of Romney, West Virginia operates scenic train rides through a bald eagle sanctuary along a branch of the Potomac River. Operating over a total of 52.4 miles of former Baltimore & Ohio branchline, the Potomac Eagle primarily operates a 35-mile round trip from Romney through The Trough to Sycamore Bridge along the South Branch Valley of the Potomac River. These trips provide the closest land equivalent to whale watching, as each trip practically guarantees an eagle sighting.
Occasional all-day trips are run south to Petersburg, a 76-mile round trip through more winding river views past Moorefield, all the way to South Side Depot. Recently added to the railroad's schedule are trips to Green Spring, a shorter 25-mile round trip north.
This video features footage from both special trips, and also includes footage from a photo special on the Green Spring line, with leased B&O and C&O diesels being used to jointly operate freight and passenger trips through normally inaccessible locations. It's all here in one big video.
With impressive scenery in any season, a unique up-close look at America's national bird, and nicely restored diesels and passenger equipment, the Potomac Eagle is a one-of-a-kind operation.

Train Chases Cows on the Tracks - POTOMAC EAGLE SCENIC RAILROAD ROMNEY, WV
The cows come home during a run of the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. The cows had walked along the tracks nearly a mile from their home pasture and were on the ridge overlooking Wapocoma Campground near Romney, WV. The locomotive crew blew the horn several times to try to coax them off the tracks, but they continued running down the gauge as the train crept behind them. Recorded June 22, 2019.

Driving through Romney, West Virginia
Romney is a city in and the county seat of Hampshire County, West Virginia, USA.
Originally settled in 1725 by hunters and traders, Romney was known as Pearsall's Flats and was the site of the French and Indian War stockade Fort Pearsall. Named for the Cinque Ports town of Romney, Kent, England by Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, the town still bears place names and symbols from its colonial past such as its Marsham Street, named for Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney. It is also home to the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind and the nation's First Confederate Memorial in Indian Mound Cemetery.

Chasing Classic Cabs and Cowls 2: Potomac Eagle
A few years ago, I rode the Potomac Eagle Scenic railroad of Romney, West Virginia. The power was two classic F units, C&O 4018 and B&O 722. A delightful sunny afternoon excursion with good friends on the Potomac Eagle Train through the South Branch Potomac Trough, a 7-mile stretch of dramatically beautiful wilderness from the Trough General Store to the Sycamore Bridge, between Romney and Moorefield, WV. Saw lots of eagles overhead and on the river, but unfortunately couldn't capture any on video.

Driving up South Branch Mountain near Moorefield, WV
Filmed 10/22/2017 - A secluded, but dramatic mountain road, starting at about 900ft elevation at the bottom of the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac Valley and rising to the top of South Branch mountain in under 6 miles, with a rise of 2000ft. The road is narrow with very sharp turns. It is most difficult coming down because you need to put the vehicle in 1st or 2nd gears to prevent burning up the brakes.
