Prairie Wind Overlook, Badlands National Park, South Dakota (Trip 4 Vid 8) United States
Prairie Wind Overlook is different from other overlooks in Badlands National Park. It is just as important as the rest of the park. Far too many people pass this one by.
Not my best video, the memory card on the camera was almost full and I was paying too much attention to that instead of what I was trying to communicate causing me to say uh far too many times.
Badlands National Park, South Dakota - Prairie Wind Overlook (2019)
Badlands National Park (Lakota: Makȟóšiča) is an American national park located in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi; 982.4 km2) of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The National Park Service manages the park, with the South Unit being co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.
The Badlands Wilderness protects 64,144 acres (100.2 sq mi; 259.6 km2) of the park as a designated wilderness area, and is one site where the black-footed ferret, one of the most endangered mammals in the world, was reintroduced to the wild. The South Unit, or Stronghold District, includes sites of 1890s Ghost Dances, a former United States Air Force bomb and gunnery range, and Red Shirt Table, the park's highest point at 3,340 feet (1,020 m).
Authorized as Badlands National Monument on March 4, 1929, it was not established until January 25, 1939. Badlands was redesignated a national park on November 10, 1978. Under the Mission 66 plan, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center was constructed for the monument in 1957–58. The park also administers the nearby Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Movies such as Dances with Wolves (1990) and Thunderheart (1992) were partially filmed in Badlands National Park.
The Badlands of South Dakota in our RV
This is a travel experience by The Adventure Travelers.com. While we were passing through the state of South Dakota, we stumbled upon the Badlands National Park. Although the sun was setting, we entered into the park and found the very scary road to the campsite which was about 24 miles in the dark in our large Sunseeker RV. After finding a spot, we settled in for the night and returned to the ranger station in the morning to pay our fees. The campsites were very basic but had electric hook ups and were very flat. Most of the sites were a pull through (off the side) of the campground road. Because we were there in April, we enjoyed that it wasn't the tourist season yet and the campsites were very empty.
We took our Prius off of the EZE tow dolly and we were able to set out to explore more of the park. There are many obvious hiking trails created by the park, however there are places to explore that could be quite dangerous (off trail). There are steep cliffs, erosion and mud caves created by the wind weather and rain. If you want to explore more of the mud caves you should take a knowledgeable guide.
The wildlife was quite stunning as we saw bison, antelope, deer, snakes and prairie dogs. Of course you should never approach wildlife, and the prairie dogs in the Badlands National Park have plague, so as fun as it seems to get close, you should keep your distance.
The visitor center is very educational and actually has a spot for you to leave a postcard or a piece of mail.
There are many exhibits and signs that explore the geology of this area. It is against the law to take any shells, rocks or vegetation with you.
The flanking town of Wall is very small, however you must take a trip to Wall Drugs (trust me, you'll see the signs). We were able to explore Wall Drugs for several hours but I wish we could have spent more time there. It's a wonderful example of good old fashion Americana with stores, eateries and very authentic and local crafts.
You could easily explore and hike the Badlands for two or three days.

Badlands National Park in South Dakota is an amazing geological landscape of rugged beauty. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. The park's 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs live today.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota - Road Trip Vlog 8
Badlands National Park, South Dakota - We visit the Ben Reifel Visitor's Center and see the majestic beauty of the rock formations, landscape, and learn about the fossil remains of the prehistoric animals that lived there.. See it at:
There’s a timeless quality to the Badlands in South Dakota. The scenery is undeniably stark and desolate. It’s an unearthly-looking landscape whose origins are presented in the fossilized remains of mammals from the prehistoric Oligocene Period. We were mesmerized.
The park encompasses 242,726 acres (98,240 ha) which also includes some prairieland. Lex, Sar and I were looking forward to exploring the largely undisturbed National Park and explore the belly of its canyons and pinnacles.
But first, we visited the Ben Reifel Visitor’s Center to get a better understanding of its history.
The visitor’s center was named after Benjamin “Ben” Reifel (Born September 19, 1906 – Died January 2, 1990) also known as Lone Feather who had a career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was of Lakota Sioux and German American background. Ben Reifel was the first Lakota to be elected to the House of Representatives and served as a Republican United States Congressman for 5 terms.
The Badlands was established as a National Monument in 1939 and the Ben Reifel Visitor’s Center was built for the monument in 1958. Eventually, the Badlands was designated a National Park in 1978 and is managed by the National Park Service.
The exhibits at the center cover the park from the prehistoric times to a more recent history of the Native Americans that inhabited the area.....

We tent camped at Cedar Pass campground, which is on the east side of the Badlands, really close to the popular Notch Trail and the Door and Window trails. That's also where they do the night stars show. The campsite was great and had all the amenities we needed. Here's a link:
Also, get our tent because it's awesome:
On our second day, we drove west through the National Park and stopped at most of the overlooks to appreciate the beauty of this area.
