Goliad, Texas: Presidio La Bahia, Mission Espiritu Santo, Fannin Grave
We visited Goliad, Texas during our trip to the Gulf Coast last month. Goliad is important to Debra as she has both ancestral and professional connections to this area that she shares in this video. While in Goliad we visited the historic fort known as Presidio La Bahia, the historic Spanish mission known as Mission Espiritu Santo, and the grave of Colonel Fannin and his men. The Mission Espiritu Santo is located within Goliad State Park, while Presidio La Bahia and Colonel Fannin’s gravesite are just a short distance away. These sites are a few of the things to do in Goliad, the site of the Goliad, Texas massacre that played such an important role in the Texas Revolution.

We visit Presidio La Bahia in Goliad to explore the grounds where men died fighting for Texas Independence from Mexico. You can even stay the night at La Bahia, just as long as you aren’t afraid of what goes bump in the night! It’s a place that every Texan needs to visit, and hear the battle cry of Texas in soft South Texas breeze – Remember Goliad!

A total of 342 Texas Militia members, including Colonel James Fannin were executed on March 27th, 1836 by the Mexican Army. General Santa Anna ordered the slaughter. The mass killing helped to motivate the Texan drive for independence and was used as a rallying cry at San Jacinto where Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna.

For the first day of our visit to Goliad, Texas, we got set-up at the state park, grabbed a bite at the Empresario Restaurant, toured the Markethouse Museum, visited the memorials to Ignazio Zaragoza, the Angel of Goliad, and the Goliad Massacre victims. Then we spent the night at an old (and haunted?) Spanish colonial-era fort, Presidio la Bahia.

Take a Tour of Presidio La Bahia! The oldest standing fort west of the Mississippi River, still stands today in Goliad, Texas. Presidio La Bahia, built here in 1749, is so rich in Texas history, that you can feel that history as you walk its grounds.

Presidio La Bahia - Its Place in the History of Texas
Every new attempt to change the government in the Texas territory of New Spain meant the capture of Presidio La Bahia, now one of the best preserved Spanish Forts in America. Though established by Spain to protect the Texas Coast, it was moved to its present location in Goliad in 1749. It was restored in the 1960's and stands today as a monument to the battles fought, and the lives lost in the Texas Revolution.
The capture of Presidio La Bahia from Mexico on the night of October 9, 1835 was one of the first offensive actions against a Mexican military installation in the Texas Revolution. The first Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in the chapel at Presidio La Bahia. Goliad is also the site where Colonel James W. Fannin and 341 of his men were executed in 1836 on orders from Mexican General Santa Anna.
This 54 minute video includes dramatic re-enactments, historical documents and photos and interviews with renowned historians to bring to life the rich saga of Presidio La Bahia and its important place in the history of Texas.

Originally built in 1749 to protect the Mission and the frontier, it later played a major role in the Texas Revolution. Here, Colonel Fannin and his ill-fated men were held prior to being executed at Santa Anna's order, an act of infamy later recalled at the Battle of San Jacinto with the cry, Remember Goliad! Remember the Alamo!
Goliad is one of the few places in North America where you can visit both an 18th-century Spanish-Colonial mission and presidio (fort) complex, to understand the roles of the Catholic Church and the Spanish military in settling the New World.
Near the Presidio is the Fannin Memorial Monument. After the defeat of the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto, as General Rusk and the Texas army was following the Mexican army out of Texas, when they arrived at Goliad, they gathered up the remains of Fannin and his men and buried them at a site to the southeast of Presidio La Bahia.
Introducing the Goliad Doppelbock
Within Goliad resides the historic Spanish religious sites of Mission Espiritu Santo, Presidio La Bahia, and Mission Rosario.
To celebrate Lenten and other occasions that required fasting, monks from the old world developed a lager that would be heartwarming and sustain them through the day. They were known to sell a little extra on the side without government permission which occasionally caused civil disorder to suddenly breakout around the monastery.
The Doppelbock or double bock (sometimes thought of as liquid bread), was a means to cleanse the soul after a hard day of castigating themselves over extended periods without food. These monks would feel welcome in the familiar historical and beautiful setting of Goliad, Texas.
Now it is possible to visit Goliad and discover the reason the monks were so willing to suffer for their beliefs!
Spend a weekend with us and explore the history surrounding Mission Espiritu Santo in Goliad State Park and the Fortress, Presidio La Bahia along with the Fannin Battleground or float the river. All are open to the public along with the Goliad Brewing Beer Garden. Kids and dogs are welcome.
After a hard day of self flagellation and fasting, slip out of the coarse robes and unwind on your stone floor while enjoying a soothing Doppelbock. You know you have it too good.
Listen to live music, tour the brewery, play horseshoes or washers and have a very relaxing afternoon with us. If all your friends happen to be monks, bring them along. Just remember to Please Castigate Responsibly. Remember Goliad!
