Diving Ishigaki Japan
In April we were fortunate to take a quick one hour direct flight from Taipei to Ishigaki, and the weather held for us to make it to Manta point. We managed to get one of our bucket list encounters in on our second diving day. Manta rays at a cleaning station! The trip couldn't have been more perfect. Thanks to Diving School Umicoza and Viking Scuba Kabria for taking us on great dives for English speakers!

Ishigaki and Yaeyama Manta Points

Ishigaki (石垣島 Ishigaki-jima?, Yaeyama and Okinawan: Ishigachi) is a Japanese island west of Okinawa Hontō and the second-largest island of the Yaeyama Island group. It is within the City of Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture. The city functions as the business and transport center of the archipelago. The island is served by New Ishigaki Airport, the largest airport in the Yaeyamas.
Much of the island and surrounding waters including Mount Omoto and Kabira Bay are protected as part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park.[1]
Ishigaki Island, like the rest of Okinawa, is culturally influenced by both Japan and Taiwan due to its location, about 300 km off the north eastern coast of Taiwan (Republic Of China).
A tsunami of record height hit Ishigaki Island in 1771.[2]
The island provided the scene for the arrest of one of the perpetrators of Aum Shinrikyo's sarin gas attack, Yasuo Hayashi, 21 months after and 2000 km away from where the crime took place.
Ishigaki Port will be expanded so that five large Japanese coast guard patrol boats can be stationed there.[3] The JSDF is also considering deploying short range anti-ship missiles[4] (possibly the Type 96 Multi-Purpose Missile System) on the island.
These reinforcements are mostly in relation to the Japanese uninhabited Senkaku Islands, which lie 170 km north of Ishigaki and are under the control of the mayor of Ishigaki, which has been given civic authority over the territory since the Senkaku Islands reverted from the US to the Japanese government control in 1972. China (People's Republic of China) and Taiwan (Republic Of China) have challenged Japan's sovereignty over these Senkaku Islands since 1972, with more intensity since 2012.Unruly stalks brushed against the windows of the white Suzuki minivan as it bumped down an unmarked dirt road through a field of sugar cane. When the road abruptly ended, we continued on foot down a barely perceptible path through thick tropical foliage, fighting through branches and brush.
And then there it was: a tiny secluded cove with smooth white sand spread between rocky outcroppings and the Pacific Ocean’s million shades of blue.
“There are many secret beaches on Ishigaki, but this one is my favorite,” said Haruna Miyaji, a local music teacher and my unofficial tour guide for the day, as we stood on the deserted beach, admiring the scene.
It was early January when my husband and I made the journey to Ishigaki, a beautiful Japanese island over 1,200 miles southwest of Tokyo. At the tail end of a string of volcanic islands that stretches southwest toward Taiwan, Ishigaki is the main hub of the remote Yaeyama Islands.
The population of about 50,000 is concentrated in the town of Ishigaki, a decidedly unattractive urban pocket on the island’s southern edge that is home to many restaurants, bars, shops and hotels, as well as a small port from which ferries depart for nearby islands. But the rest of Ishigaki, which covers about the same area as Martha’s Vineyard, is a wonderland of nature rightfully revered among the Japanese: unspoiled beaches, coral reefs in dazzlingly clear waters, palm tree forests, pineapple plantations and tropical vistas that are rarely associated with Japan. Ishigaki-jima Island is the main island in the Yae-yama archipelago, which is about 420 kilometers southwest of Naha on Okinawa Main Island. Ishigaki-jima Island is 90 kilometers around, and covered with mountains, including Mt. Omoto-dake, rising 526 meters above sea level, the highest in Okinawa.
The coral reef sea there is famous throughout the world and there are many scenic marine spots on the island, such as Shiraho, noted for a variety of colored coral that can be seen covering the bottom below the transparent waters, and Kabira Bay where the ocean's blueness is said to be the brightest in Okinawa.
In the suburbs of the city of Ishigaki spread the sugarcane fields, beyond which are the lush green mountain areas where Mt. Omoto-dake is found. The jungles of tropical plants, such as mangroves, are quite valuable, as well as the stands of Yae-yama palm trees that are truly unique, growing wild only on the Yae-yama Islands.
There are a number of sightseeing spots where you can relax and enjoy beautiful scenery, like the Tamatorizaki Observatory, and the scenic Hirakubo and Ugan capes, accessible by a rental car or bike.
Ships are the main mode of transportation from Ishigaki-jima Island to the surrounding islands, such as Taketomi-jima, Iriomote-jima, Kuro-shima and Kohama-jima, and with frequent departures offered, it makes the islands great day-trip destinations.

20 September 2019 - Day 29 - Ishigaki Island I
VLOG 291
We wake up to a rainy morning and just like the streets of Ishigaki, our hopes of scuba diving are washed out for the day. Looks like we have picked the perfect time to come to this island as a typhoon is on its way for the next few days. Just our luck!! ????????????????
Shizu and I have known each other for more than a year now and we gotten questions over that time if we are anything official or if we ever will be. It’s certainly a funny situation because though we really get along, we both know it’s not for the long run. A year is a considerable amount of time knowing things won’t eventuate, usually only a couple of months probation is warranted until a commitment is requested, otherwise it’s sayonara after that. ????????♀️????????♀️
But I guess everyone’s case is different, and in ours we never viewed it as a waste of time. We both enjoyed each other’s company, we’re not looking for anything too serious and both had long term solo trips planned. Also, had we not continued then we both would not have made it to this point travelling japan together on this awesome adventure!! ????????⛰????
I think the most important thing is to be honest and transparent about your intentions, so that each of you can make the best decision for yourselves in that particular point in time. After all, all things do come to an end, for better or worse our story does have it’s ending in a few days so might as well make the most of it!! ????????????????
