Day Tour of Tuscany | San Gimignano, Chianti, Siena |
Today, I decided it was time to try something new. I went on a guided tour to 3 different cities/towns in the region of Tuscany. We visited San Gimignano, Chianti, and Siena. We did some walking, sightseeing, and even some wine tasting! I must say, all 3 places are filled with architectural beauty and I recommend anyone to pay them a visit! Enjoy :)

Electronic music by Adel Karanov private guide - Monteriggioni Day private tour from Rome or Florence
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, located on a natural hillock, built by the Sienese in 1214–19 as a front line in their wars against Florence, by assuming command of the Via Cassia running through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west.
During the conflicts between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defensive fortification. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the forces of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1554 the Sienese were able to place control of the town's garrison to Giovannino Zeti, who had been exiled from Florence. In 1554, in an act of reconciliation with the Medicis, Zeti simply handed the keys of the town over to the Medicean forces— considered a great betrayal by the town's people.

Tuscan Truffle Hunting Tour in San Miniato details:
- The pickup time was at 10 am in front of the National Library which was an easy 15 min walk from our AirBNB.
- I booked the excursion online. The excursion costs 350 euros for two people.
- Came with a 3 course lunch with truffles and wine tasting
- If you have a car and just want to join the truffle hunting, you can do that. There was a couple in our tour that drove here themselves. They said they found them online and booked it on their own. - I also read that leaving from the San Miniato train station takes about a 15 minute taxi ride that costs €25 each way. It takes about 30 minutes to take the train from Florence.
- DO BORROW their boots because the forest is often muddy.
- October and November has the best climate for truffle hunting. Although I'm here in October, today wasn't the best climate for truffle hunting because it wasn't cold and wet enough.
Truffle Hunting Dog Details!
In Italy, the use of pigs has been prohibited since 1985. The pigs dig into the ground looking for truffles and harms the entire truffle ecosystem in the process. With dogs, they can smell the truffle and alert their owners. The owner then carefully digs up the truffle and then closes the hole back up for future truffles to grow back. Dogs like Choco cost up to $10,000 US!
Next stop: wine tasting!
This winery started in 1535. They not only produce wines - they also produce olives. They breed Cinta Senese to produce salami and prosciutto. Cinta Senese is a breed of Italian pig from the province of Siena, in Tuscany. They also produce honey and produce and everything is organic!
The big barrels can be reused for 15 to 16 years. These barrels are huge! The big barrow gives the wine a freshness and fruitier taste. The small barrels are only used for 3 years. After 3 years the barrel absorbs too much wine to be reused.
The green glass on top of the barrel allows the gas created by fermentation to escape while not allowing air back in. This cool contraption was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci.
After the tour we got to taste their wines along with some salami and prosciutto. They add fennel seeds into the salami. It was very good!
Why does Florence, Italy bread have no salt?
The bread made in this region of Italy has no salt added. I didn't know that as it was my first time trying saltless bread. I'll have to admit I like my bread with some sodium. Bread from Tuscany and Florentine and maybe some other places near by don't add salt to their bread. There are many reasons for this: I don't know which one is true. But here goes: salt used to be heavily taxed so to save some money they stopped adding salt to their bread. Another reason is during war between Pisa and Florence the Pisan army set up a blockade on the Arno River to prevent salt shipments from reaching Florence. Without salt, bakers just continued baking their bread without the salt. Last reason is Tuscan cuisine tend to be on the saltier side so the bread is to help eat the salty food.
Final STOP: Plaza Michelangelo. He was willing to drop us off there instead so we can catch the sunset.
It was nice because this place was on my list to visit and it saved me a hike up the hill to get there.
The view up here is amazing! You can see the entire city of Florence from here. It was a bit cloudy to see the sunset, but it was still very nice.

Traveling in Tuscany: The Best Wine Tasting & Wine Tours - Wine Oh TV
Wine Oh TV's Monique Soltani is Traveling in Tuscany and shows us the Best Wine Tasting and Wine Tours in the Italian Wine Region.
This is the second video of a three part video series I'm producing which highlights my recent trip to Tuscany. In my first video, Traveling in Tuscany: Uncorking Chianti Classico, we learned what Chianti Classico IS. Now it's time to introduce you to some of the amazing men and women behind the bottle. Traveling in Tuscany: Wine Tasting & Tours gets up close and personal with the kings and queens of wine country who roll out the ruby red wine carpet in our honor.
If the royal treatment wets your appetite, then meeting the Marquis of Tuscany should make you salivate. We get a taste of their intoxicating blends as we hold court at the new Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Cellar, go off-roading at Castello d'Albola and wine with Conte Sebastiano Capponi of Villa Calcinaia and Francesco Mazzei of Marchesi Mazzei.

WINE TASTING IN TUSCANY ITALY
WINE TASTING IN TUSCANY ITALY
We had a brilliant day doing a wine tasting tour from Florence into the beautiful countryside of Tuscany, Italy
Our first stop in Tuscany was the Chianti region where we tried 4 different Chianti wines. We then had around 40 minutes to explore a small Tuscany village. The second Vineyard was our favourite, set in the stunning hills of the Siena region of Tuscany, hills and vineyards as far as the eye could see and we got to watch the beautiful sunset.
It was a truly magical experience and we had the best day doing wine tasting in Tuscany, Italy
Siena walking tour in historic center
The historic center of Siena is an ideal place to take a walk. See more Siena movies in our playlist: Siena is a very livable city. It's built to a human scale covering about a square kilometer which makes it small enough that you can easily walk from one end of town to the other in a single day and see almost all of the sites in between. There's an endless variety of interesting things to see along your way. A small city, but crisscrossed by dozens of little lanes that provide many miles of picturesque strolling opportunities for the ambitious trekker. It's fun to just wander around and get a little bit lost, up and down the back alleys and then find your way back to the main lane and the major landmarks. Siena is divided in three districts corresponding to the three ridges it sits on, North, West and East, with the Campo in the middle, the main piazza. At the north end of the main shopping lane, via Banchi di Sopra, there is a pretty little square, Piazza Salimbeni, with Europe's oldest bank founded in 1472. Facing that is Siena's five-star grand Hotel Continental. It's been here over 100 years, a former palace – nice spot for a break. The next square is Piazza Tolomei, whose palazzo is the oldest private residence in town dating from the early 13th century. The piazza's a popular place for locals to hang out and watch the passing parade. This main shopping street is worth walking from one end to the other, perhaps stopping for a bite at one of the attractive little restaurants along the way. And narrow side alleys will attract you with their charms. This street was once part of Europe's most important medieval route, like an agent superhighway called via Francigena, which united northern Europe with Rome, always busy with pilgrims heading for the sacred city. Via Banchi di Sopra soon ends at the beautiful Loggia Mercanzia. Built in the early 1400s the loggia had been commercial Court of Justice and a money exchange house. This is the central intersection, the heart of downtown were Siena's three main pedestrian streets come together: via Banchi di Sopra comes in from the north, then branches off to the east becoming via Banchi di Sotto, and to the west as via di Citta. The latter two, Citta and Sotto are really one street the changes name, then change again at the fringes of town. They run along tops of the three low hills that divide Siena into its three sections. At this poi nt all three districts are joined. These three streets of the widest and busiest of the pedestrian lanes in the historic center and have many buildings from the 13th through the 15th century – palaces, churches and old civic structures. Of course you will find varying kinds of find shops and restaurants throughout their lengths, which total less than one mile altogether. This is the neighborhood for easy strolling and watching the locals in action, although it does get quite full of tourists during the busy summer season. Escape the crowds by ducking into the side alleys as we will be showing you here. You'll find that when you get off the beaten track these little lanes are a lot more residential, you're not going to see a lot of shops or restaurants but you will notice the beautiful architecture, the old brick, the arches across the alley ways. Simple sites like local out walking her dog can be pretty entertaining when you just stop and take a look and wait for something to happen. Walking on the steep hills can be a challenge for anybody, especially if you have a dog who's pulling you in the opposite direction. If you're walking down you're going to be having to turn around eventually and walk back up a hill, after all this is one of the Tuscan hill towns.
