Senate Impeachment Trial Of President Trump - Day 9 | NBC News (Live Stream)
Little People Legend
For years, stories have persisted about Cherokee little people. As legend tells it, they lived underground.
Local author, Mary Joyce, has a written a new book about them called, Cherokee Little People Were Real, and says there is evidence to prove it. Others aren't so sure.
Joyce started collecting notes more than a decade ago about legends of little people in our western mountains. She says they were here before the Cherokee.
She says the Cherokee came from the Great Lakes region thousands of years ago, arriving in Western North Carolina to find little people who lived underground. They would tend their gardens at night time, by the moonlight. And originally the Cherokee called them moon people, she says, adding the Cherokee adopted them.
Joyce bases much of her book on the recollections of two men who grew up hearing little people stories, claiming to have seen evidence, including tunnels near older buildings at Western Carolina University, like the McKee building built in the 1930s. And these tunnels I guess were like a network.
I don't doubt that they're telling the truth. But I just haven't seen any evidence myself, says Jane Eastman, Associate Professor and Director of Cherokee Studies at WCU. She works in the McKee building, and ran excavations near the building between 2003 and 2005. She says she found evidence of Cherokee homes, but no signs of tunnels. I don't have any reasons to doubt other people's beliefs and understandings, she says however.
Freeman Owle is a lecturer of Cherokee culture and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. He lectured to Eastman's classes about the little people and the belief of many Cherokee in them. And they do really believe that these things do exist and they're only about 2 feet tall when fully grown, he says.
He says he does not discount their existence in a culture spanning thousands of years. Pretty well developed the belief in these little people just like people develop a belief in God, says Owle.
Mary Joyce will talk about her book and the Cherokee little people, at City Lights in Sylva Friday night at 6:30.

Is the House GOP Putting Reelection Before Border Security?
WASHINGTON DC | Long-awaited immigration-reform principles were finally revealed when House Republicans concluded their annual retreat in Cambridge, Maryland late last week.
The document is dividing the GOP. But political fears threaten to slow the pace of crucial border-security reforms.
Simply put, some House Republicans foresee a primary backlash from voters over the immigration issue.
The GOP blueprint places strong emphasis on interior security and border enforcement. Those Republicans with a more hardline view claim say these enforcement measures must take priority over legalization measures.
According to the Beltway journal Roll Call: Republicans do not favor a 'special pathway' to citizenship for anyone who illegally traversed the border into the United States.
However, the House document does contain options for the 12 million illegal aliens living in the country. The apparent goal is legal residency, not full-blown citizenship.
The document states: These persons could live legally and without fear in the U.S., but only if they were willing to admit their culpability, pass rigorous background checks, pay significant fines and back taxes, develop proficiency in English and American civics, and be able to support themselves and their families . . .
Criminal aliens, gang members, sex offenders and others who do not meet the requirements will not be eligible for residency.
Furthermore, the document provides a chance for legal residency and also citizenship for those who were brought to this country as children through no fault of their own.
In that respect, the GOP plan generally resembles President Obama's DREAM Act. The DREAM Act sought a pathway to citizenship and college for qualifying immigrants who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children.
At the Republican retreat, House Speaker John Boehner repeated his opposition to the Senate's monolithic bill passed last summer. While the House has opted for a piecemeal approach to immigration reform, Boehner is now claiming that these GOP principles won't be compromised.
Boehner stated: The safety and security of our nation depends on our ability to secure our border, enforce our laws, improve channels for legal entry to the country, and identify who is here illegally.
California Democrat Nancy Pelosi responded: These standards are as far as we are willing to go.
Boehner and Rep. Paul Ryan argued for immigration reform now. But Reps. Lamar Smith of Texas and Rep. Tom Price of Georgia were among several influential Republicans who said reform can wait.
Real principles are unwavering ideas, grounded in basic truths, which withstand the test of time. But two words explain the GOP's creative view of principles: Reelection fears.
Several House members worry that a floor vote on the touchy immigration issue will intensify primary election challenges. States hold their primaries throughout the year. That makes it impossible for the House leadership to wait out every potential challenge. Texas primaries are held in early March. In Florida, party voters do not choose their nominees to fill House seats until August.
Furthermore, President Obama, in his State of the Union speech, swore he'd bypass Congress whenever possible with executive orders, including on immigration reform. If Congress allows Obama to do that, then all this legislative debate could end up providing cover for Obama's exercise of power—beyond constitutional confines.
Therefore, border security may be forced to take a back seat to House members who are more worried about their seat in Congress than the safety of Americans. Given the fact that dangerous drug cartels operate on both sides of the U.S. border with Mexico, many citizens may rightly see this as a slap in the face.

In The Blind
In the Blind, a powerful new documentary that traces the unique traditions and rich culture of waterfowl hunting in Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise and explores the sport’s relevance in a global conservation effort to preserve and restore waterfowl populations, migratory flyways and fragile habitat of this imperiled region.
In the Blind transports audiences across Louisiana from coastal marshes to flooded forests to trace the history of some of the region’s most famous hunting clubs and public land hunting spots, along with the traditions and cuisine that make up this unique, renowned culture. The program features an immersive, “day in the life” of the sport’s most passionate participants, from the hunters and guides, to the card players, storytellers, cooks, decoy carvers, call-makers, wildlife conservationists, land managers and environmental journalists.
For this documentary, LPB partnered with New Orleans-based filmmaker Emma Lou Reid, producer, writer and director of In the Blind. For three years, Reid - a Minnesota native and Louisiana transplant - immersed herself in the culture, politics and landscape of duck hunting. Prior to working on In The Blind, Reid co-produced the National Telly Award winning documentary, Finding Common Ground.
LPB’s President and CEO, Beth Courtney, will interview Reid about the project during the statewide premiere of In the Blind, Thursday, December 12 at 7PM on LPB. The film will also be steaming live at lpb.org/live and on the LPB App (LPB broadcast encore Sunday, December 15 at 6:30PM). Viewers will be offered exclusive opportunities during the LPB broadcast, including a hunting camp excursion, a kayak/birdwatching tour of Bayou Manchac led by Reid, and other unique duck hunting items.
In the Blind will also air on WYES in New Orleans on Wednesday, December 18 at 8PM (encore Saturday, December 21 at 3PM).
Major funding for In the Blind is generously provided by Lipsey's, Acadian Ambulance Service and Mr. & Mrs. W. Clinton Rasberry Jr. and W. Clinton Rasberry III.

The Origin of That Old-Timey Accent in Classic Movies
In the 1920s and into the 1950s, Hollywood had a particular way of talking. It was called the Midatlantic or the Transatlantic accent. But we don't speak like that anymore. The accent was acquired, so there's no line tracing it back through history — but we gave it a try.
