Inside Russia's propaganda machine
For years, the Kremlin and the media it controls have waged a multifaceted information (and disinformation) campaign inside Russia and against its perceived adversaries, including the U.S. As part of our week-long series Inside Putin's Russia, special correspondent Nick Schifrin and producer Zach Fannin report on the information wars, in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Moscow Prepares Counter-Sanctions on US Propaganda Operating in Russia

Restricting the work of the RT television channel, the US violate their own laws and freedom of speech principles, Maria Zakharova said at a meeting of the working group of the Federation Council. It discussed the attempts of the American media to intervene in Russia's affairs. Anton Podkovenko is reporting on the measures that might follow in response to the oppression of RT. The US action towards the Russian media on US territory is a whole chain of glaring facts, with new ones emerging. America puts pressure on Russia Today TV channel and Sputnik news agency. Following the meeting in the Federation Council, the working group gave special recommendations.

Top-5 Russian propaganda methods
State-controlled Russian TV creates a centralized, easily manageable environment, used by the Kremlin to set and promote informational agenda it deems favorable. In promotion of such agenda, aimed at creating a sense of hostility coming from the West, justification of aggressive Russian policy and glorification of authoritarian rules, a wide set of methods is employed.
We at HWA Group analyzed 5 of the most popular ones:
- accusations of “Russophobia”;
- promotion of conspiracy theories;
- creating and spreading pure fakes;
- manipulating historical narratives;
- mixing different narratives.
All these methods are typically tailored to fit a specific goal and used in combination for a more powerful effect. For example, to develop and strengthen Kremlin’s stance on the Skripal poisoning case, British government is accused of “Russophobia”, a tremendous amount of mutually exclusive and confusing narratives (138 as estimated by EU vs Disinformation) is promoted, several of which fit the framework of a conspiracy theory, according to which assassination of S.Skripal is actually in the interest of the UK.
Further example of these methods being instrumental in creating specific agenda beneficial for the government is the fact that mentions of “Russophobia” in Russian media started growing rapidly in 2014 (evidenced by DFRLab). It was an aggressive defense mechanism against international reaction to the occupation of Crimea and war in eastern Ukraine.
Systematic application of this toolkit further demonstrates the existence of carefully crafted and supervised propaganda machinery, serving distinct political goals set by the Kremlin

Watch Part 2:
Despite sanctions, a plummeting economy, and isolation from the world as a result of its actions in Ukraine, a wave of patriotic fervor is spreading across Russia. Thousands of Russians have attended rallies in support of President Vladimir Putin, whose popularity ratings remain sky-high, while voices of the opposition are increasingly stifled.
On the streets and in the media, the Kremlin has tightened its grip on power. State-controlled television channels spin facts to bolster the government line, whipping up anti-Western sentiment and paranoia about internal enemies. Independent broadcasters are struggling to make themselves heard as the country grows more dangerous for journalists and popular figures who are critical of the authorities.
In part one of our two-part series, VICE News travels to Siberia to meet Noize MC, the outspoken Russian rapper whose anti-government views have drawn the close attention of the Kremlin, while in Moscow we get inside access to Project Network, a pro-Kremlin youth group dedicated to molding the next generation of Russians in the image of their president.

In the concluding part of our two-part series, VICE News investigates how the Kremlin uses state-controlled television to manipulate public opinion and whip up anti-Western sentiment, giving rise to a far-right nationalist movement, while narrowing the media landscape, and silencing — sometimes violently — dissenting points of view.

Russia: EP 'propaganda' resolution hails degradation of Western democracy - Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin hit out at the European Parliament's (EP) adoption of a draft resolution intended to counteract so-called anti-EU propaganda, on Wednesday in Moscow, describing the decision as a sign of the degradation of the idea of democracy in Western society.
The report, which sites Russian news channel RT and Sputnik news agency as some of the most dangerous tools of Russian propaganda, claims that Moscow aims to incite fear and divide Europe. It goes on to imply that Moscow provides financial support to opposition parties in Europe in a bid to destabilise the EU.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): You know, I have not heard yet about this. I know that there was a discussion on this issue, this is the first time I hear this news on its adoption. So what can I say. Recently - and the attempts are still in progress - we were being taught democracy by everyone. And we have always heard from these teachers that the most vicious way to deal with opponents is to prohibit something. This is not consistent with the principles and norms of democracy. And the best way is an open discussion and presentation of striking and convincing arguments to defend one's point of view in this debate. If what you say is true and this decision is taken, this means that we are seeing, and it is clear, some degradation of the idea of democracy in Western society in the political sense of the word, in this case at the level of the European Parliament. However, I very much hope that common sense will prevail and we will not really see any restrictions. And I want to congratulate our media representatives, journalists, which prompted representatives of the European authority to make such decisions, with the fact that they apparently do their work very actively, productively and with talent.
