More about Parishscapes:
Okehampton Castle Devon.
Okehampton Castle is a medieval motte and bailey castle in Devon, England. It was built between 1068 and 1086 by Baldwin FitzGilbert following a revolt in Devon against Norman rule, and formed the centre of the Honour of Okehampton, guarding a crossing point across the West Okement River. It continued in use as a fortification until the late 13th century, when its owners, the de Courtenays, became the Earls of Devon. With their new wealth, they redeveloped the castle as a luxurious hunting lodge, building a new deer park that stretched out south from the castle, and constructing fashionable lodgings that exploited the views across the landscape. The de Courtenays prospered and the castle was further expanded to accommodate their growing household.
The de Courtenays were heavily involved in the 15th century Wars of the Roses and Okehampton Castle was frequently confiscated. By the early 16th century the castle was still in good condition, but after Henry Courtenay was executed by Henry VIII the property was abandoned and left to decay, while the park was rented out by the Crown. Parts of the castle were reused as a bakery in the 17th century, but by the 19th century it was completely ruined and became popular with Picturesque painters, including J. M. W. Turner. Renovation work began properly in the 20th century, first under private ownership and then, more extensively, after the castle was acquired by the state. In the 21st century it is controlled by English Heritage and operated as a tourist attraction.

Dartmoor Way - a recreational circular cycling route around Dartmoor National Park
dartmoorway.co.uk
The Dartmoor Way is a 95 mile-long circular cycling route around Dartmoor linking hamlets, villages and towns. It is signed with brightly coloured waymarkers and is suitable for cyclists of all abilities from families to cycling enthusiasts. Passing through or near Bovey Tracey, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Ivybridge, Yelverton, Tavistock, Okehampton, Chagford and Moretonhampstead to name a few, the route takes in a variety of stunning views and beautiful Devon scenery -- with plenty of places to stay, eat and drink along the way. It is mainly on quiet roads or hard ground, so no off-road or specialist equipment is required.
The new route enables visitors to leave their cars behind and explore the beautiful national park by bike, whether for a day trip or longer. In addition to the main circular route there is a 27-mile long High Moorland Link trail, which cuts across Dartmoor via Princetown, creating two shorter circular routes or adding an extra challenge for those who wish to cycle the entire trail in a figure of eight.

Hole Station Adults Only Woodland Camping in Devon, UK | An Aerial View
Please note: Permission to fly was granted by the owner. Always seek permission from the landowner before launching your drone on private property.
Playlist of our stay at Hole Station
Camping at Hole Station is unique, pitches are sited in private clearings located in a natural deciduous woodland - it's about as far from camping in a field as you can get. The peace, quiet and privacy you enjoy here is quite the eye opener for those who have previously only camped on sites that are 'open plan'.
You'll no longer be tripping over next doors' guylines, or experiencing the joys of their kids playing football at 6am. You won't have to suffer the delights of car doors slamming all day and night and headlights providing that illumination in your tent that you so crave, others who are convinced their choice in music is what you want to hear 24 hours, or finding out what some shouty faux cockney is up to on Eastenders.
There are 24 pitches in 23 acres of woodland so at night, sat by your campfire with a glass of plonk close to hand, gazing up at the stars (no light pollution here) you could be forgiven for thinking you have the place all to yourselves.
Hole Station is also one of those rare places when mums and dads can have some grown up time together - no under 18's ( Adult only doesn't mean naturism. It just means no kids).
Hole Station offer two styles of camping.
The first is BYO which means you bring all your own gear. Every BYO pitch has it's own kitchen shelter, simple bench and campfire pit. No two pitches are the same, and it's self selection so on arrival the first thing you do is have a wander and choose from those available. We charge per person which means you can put up awnings, hammocks, multiple tents etc. without being hit with a bill for extras.
The second is Rent-A-Tent. All you need to bring is your bedding, torches, matches and a toiletry kit. Everything else is provided including a large, fully equipped wooden open fronted kitchen/dining shelter and of course a tent. Your tent has plenty of stand up headroom with a wood floor, two bedrooms and airbeds included. Although you have gas cooking facilities provided, if you really don't want to cook then don't - we have an on site cafe for breakfasts and plenty of local pubs serving good food.
Rules
18+ only, no children.
No dogs ( we have free range chickens, there were incidents in the past.....)
Quiet time from 11pm - keep it right down, others are trying to sleep
No foraging for wood
No radios, no musical instruments - at any time
Do not bring your own firewood

Sourton Cross Travelodge. Clean. Polite friendly staff. Even though by a busy A road there good sound proofing. 4 electric sockets. 1 digital TV with Freeview. 30 minutes of free WIFi. There is strong 4g and weak 4g on the O2 network. Electric heater you can control the temperature nice and warm. There is a bath with shower. The water is easy to control and very warm. In my room there was a double bed and single bed. I even had bit of a view of sourton tor from the window. There is a burger king, Subway, Greg's and Waitrose right next to it. It is a motel but I arrived by foot and was not to hard to get to. I used as a base while doing some winter hiking and camping in Dartmoor. My stay was £25 per night.

Places to see in ( Westward Ho - UK )
Westward Ho! is a seaside village near Bideford in Devon, England. The A39 road provides access from the towns of Barnstaple, Bideford and Bude. Westward Ho lies at the south end of Northam Burrows and faces westward into Bideford Bay, opposite Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows. There is an electoral ward with the same name.
Westward Ho is known for its surfing seas and the long expanse of clean sand backed by a pebble ridge and grasslands which extends for about three miles. Westward Ho has two churches, Westward Ho! Baptist Church and Holy Trinity Church. The seaward part of the village of Westward Ho lies within the North Devon Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
The rocks on the coastline of Westward Ho! are of Upper Carboniferous age. The rocks were tilted during the Variscan Orogeny; in the present day they dip at 50-70 degrees north and south. The wave-cut platform is an example of a multi-scale fault system, with the phases of tectonic activity exposed at low tide.
Stagecoach services run right through the day at 30 minute intervals, 2 buses an hour overall. National Express Coaches also serve Westward Ho!. A railway served Westward Ho! from 1901 to 1917. The Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway was a standard gauge railway which ran between these places, but had no connection with the rest of the railway system, though there was a pedestrian ferry link from Appledore to Instow which was connected to the rest of the rail network of Britain. A section of the trackbed is used as part of the South West Coast Path.
( Westward Ho - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Westward Ho . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Westward Ho - UK

High Willhays Circular - Dartmoor Hike and Wild Camp - FULL VIDEO
This Dartmoor circular hike and wild camp starts at Okehampton Camp, takes in the beautiful views over Meldon Reservoir, the eerie but wonderful Black-A-Tor-Copse, then after what seems an endless climb to reach Dartmoor's highest Tor, High Wilhays, with amazing panoramic views of Yes Tor. before setting in the shadow of West Mill Tor for a wildcamp and a look at the military railway.
Trev tries out some astro photography and timelapses with his DSLR, NAth goes under the tarp once again, and Moby comes along for the long haul. So a crammed pack video of views, wilderness and banter as Summit Or Nothing visit Dartmoors North moor.
We have some new gear to test out - we've both purchased Jet Boil Zip's for one thing ( ), so will be trying out some boil in the bag meals.
Plus Trev has a new back pack (Vango Sherpa ),
his new tent (Vango Banshee 200 )
and Nath has purchased a water filtration unit - the handy sized MSR Trail Shot .
OS Explorer MAP (Dartmoor) -
Thanks to Andrew Ross for suggesting this walk, below is his route as we received it, maybe you can copy, paste and would like to try it yourself!
And thanks to Mike from Cornish Knives and Camping for the tent - check out his channel here
Whilst some (fat people) may consider some sections hard going, they are short and as it is a circular walk, you are never that far from your car (or the station, if you have arrived by train in the Summer). The only bit of kit that you will definitely need are decent pair of boots - as you know by now, this part of Dartmoor is rocky, with lots of clitter (stop laughing at the back) and bogs (I won't tell your again - stop laughing!). Hilarious jokes aside, the boggy areas catch some people out - there's a section between Black Tor and High Willhays that is boggy three quarters of the way up, even in Summer! You probably know this already but if you find yourself having to walk through such an area, simply look for cotton grass and walk on the turfs, which are firmer, in the same way that you would use stepping stones in a stream.
Anyway, using OS28, here we go. Being a country bumpkin, I don't normally waste my time with grid references and simply read the the map, but the starting grid is 9258.
1. Park near Okehampton Camp - people use the road, by the Camp, before the Ford.
2. Once parked up, cross the Ford, immediately turn right and head onto Black Down. As you'll note, this is a deadly dull part of Dartmoor, however the scenery quickly changes.
3. Head towards the R of the Red-a-ven Brook on your map. You may want to spend a few minutes exploring here and taking some photos. If I remember correctly, there is a mineshaft there. A very odd area - beautiful until you turn and look in the direction of the quarry!
4. Next skirt around Longstone and Homerton Hill (or spend sometime on them if you want to photograph Meldon Reservoir) and head towards Black Tor.
5. I always spend some time at Black Tor. The valley is very photogenic. At this point you can head to Lints Tor, but to keep this walk in order, head towards High Willhays, by walking via Fordlands Ledge. This area can be surprisingly boggy, particularly on the higher ground after it has rained.
6. From High Willhays, you can head to Yes Tor. I then go down into the valley and up West Mill Tor. This valley is also boggy, as you would expect with a stream in it! Every Summer I watch tourists whining about getting their wet feet here!
7. From West Mill I recommend that you head to the military firing range minature railway loop - see Ray Mears' programme about Dartmoor, I'll send you a link in a moment. I walk directly to it, but until you know this area well take care, as it is deceptively boggy - you will do a lot of cotton grass hopping here!
8. From the railway, head toward Rowtor, via the firing range.
9. From Rowtor it is a short walk back to the car, or roughly a mile to Okehampton Station.
Like I said, this is a pleasant afternoon walk/hike that has great potential for a long hike. If you are going to go camping in this area, I would suggest that you use the car park by New Bridge (9059).
