Provand's Lordship, Glasgow
At Provand's Lordship you can step back into Glasgow's past in the only house to survive from the medieval city. Provand's Lordship has been extensively restored to give a real flavour of life in medieval Glasgow. This film aims to give you a flavour of this unique building and its contents.
The house was built in 1471 as part of St Nicholas's Hospital by Andrew Muirhead, Bishop of Glasgow. You can still see the bishop's coat of arms on the eastern side of the south gable. It later became the town residence of one of the canons of the cathedral chapter. This clergyman is thought to have drawn his income from the rents and taxes of Balernock, and was known as the 'Lord of the Prebend of Balernock', later corrupted to 'Lord of Provan'. The house takes its name from this title.
All the other medieval buildings that once surrounded the cathedral had been demolished by the beginning of the twentieth century. It was only through the work of the Provand's Lordship Society that the house was saved from the same fate.
The building was offered to the City of Glasgow District Council by the Provand's Lordship Society in 1978. Thanks to the donation of a fine collection of seventeenth-century Scottish furniture by Sir William Burrell, you can experience what a domestic interior of around 1700 would have looked like, as well as admiring the medieval fabric of the building.
A room on the first floor contains a display about Cuthbert Simson, a priest who lived in the house in the early sixteenth century century. Provand's Lordship stands opposite Glasgow cathedral and St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art.
Behind the house is the St Nicholas garden, a medical herb garden built in 1997. The garden contains medicinal plants in use in the fifteenth century, and is designed to reflect the original purpose of the house.

Right outside was the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, built 1990 on the site of the old Bishop's Castle. Shows how different religions handle rites of passage. There were displays showing how different religions dealt with birth, marriage and death. It was actually interesting comparing the rituals!

Walking Around The Glasgow Necropolis in Scotland
Hi! This video is of the very famous Glasgow landmark, the Glasgow Necropolis. It is situated very near to the Royal Infirmary, as well as the Glasgow Cathedral. Nobody, I believe, gets buried there these days. Some of the graves are over 100 years old.

Old Photographs Of Parkhead Glasgow Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Parkhead, a district in the East End of Glasgow. Its name comes from a small weaving hamlet at the meeting place of the Great Eastern Road, now the Gallowgate and Tollcross Road, and Westmuir Street. Duke Street and Springfield Road also meet there, to form a turreted Edwardian five way junction at Parkhead Cross. Glasgow's Eastern Necropolis was laid out in 1847 beside the Gallowgate. The area flourished with the discovery of coal in 1837 and grew into an industrial centre. In 1897 William Beardmore and Company became famous with the production of high grade steel and castings at the local Parkhead Forge, founded about 1837 and extended between 1884 and 1914. After years of decline, the massive plant was closed in 1976. Quarry Brae School in Parkhead was designed by Ninian Macwhannell and John Rogerson. It was opened on Tuesday, 16 August, 1904, in Baird Street, now called Crail Street. Ninian Macwhannell was born in Hutchesontown on 15 October 1860, son of John Macwhannell, Treasurer and later Secretary of the Glasgow School Board, and Elizabeth Parker. He was educated at Glasgow High School and was articled to Alexander Petrie in 1877, remaining as assistant until 1884 and latterly studying at Glasgow School of Art from 1881 to 1884. His partner John Rogerson was born about 1862, the son of Provost David Rogerson of Dumbarton and Mary Roy, and was principally responsible for the designs of the partnership. Macwhannell died at 1366 Pollokshaws Road on 23 December 1939. Parkhead is best known as the home of Celtic Football Club, Celtic Park, which opened in 1892 after the club moved across the road from their old ground which they had been playing on for their first three years. Parkhead railway station was opened as Parkhead, by the North British Railway on 1 February 1871. It was renamed Parkhead North on 30 June 1952 by British Railways. This was to differentiate it from the nearby ex Caledonian Railway Parkhead station on the former Glasgow Central Railway. The station was closed to passengers on 19 September 1955.

Places to see in ( Glasgow - UK )
Glasgow is a port city on the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands. It's famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Today it's a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and third largest in the United Kingdom. Historically part of Lanarkshire, it is now one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. Inhabitants of the city are referred to as Glaswegians.
Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become the largest seaport in Britain. Expanding from the medieval bishopric and royal burgh, and the later establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, Glasgow became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. From the 18th century the city also grew as one of Great Britain's main hubs of transatlantic trade with North America and the West Indies.
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the population and economy of Glasgow and the surrounding region expanded rapidly to become one of the world's pre-eminent centres of chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry, which produced many innovative and famous vessels. Glasgow was the Second City of the British Empire for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period, although many cities argue the title was theirs.
Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games and is also well known in the sporting world for the football rivalry of the Old Firm between Celtic and Rangers. Glasgow is also known for Glasgow patter, a distinct dialect that is noted for being difficult to understand by those from outside the city.
Glasgow has a large urban transport system, mostly managed by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). The city has many bus services; since bus deregulation almost all are provided by private operators though SPT part-funds some services. The principal bus operators within the city are: First Glasgow, McGill's Buses, Stagecoach West Scotland and Glasgow Citybus. The main bus terminal in the city is Buchanan bus station.
Glasgow has the most extensive urban rail network in the UK outside of London with rail services travelling to a large part of the West of Scotland.

Scottish Bagpipes Music Cathedral Square Glasgow Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of a Scottish piper playing Scottish bagpipes music in the Cathedral Square on visit to the city centre of Glasgow. There are many ancient legends and stories about bagpipes which were passed down through minstrels and oral tradition, whose origins are now lost. However evidence for Scottish bagpipes is more definite in 1396, when records of the Battle of the North Inch in Perth, Perthshire, mentions warpipes being carried into battle. Cathedral Square is a public square in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Cathedral Square and precinct is situated adjacent to Glasgow Cathedral on High Street/Castle Street at John Knox Street. Nearby are many famous Glasgow Landmarks such as Provand's Lordship, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Necropolis, the ceremonial Barony Hall of Strathclyde University, and the Glasgow Evangelical Church at the Square. It is one of six public squares and precincts in the city centre.
