A walk in the rain through the Hawthorne District in Southeast Portland, Oregon showing various streets from 47th to 11th Ave highlighting many of the restaurants, bars and quirky shops in probably the most popular strip to visit in Southeast Portland.
This was taken on a Sunday morning at about 8 AM. Recorded with binaural audio, though there isn't much to listen to except passing cars. Hawthorne Blvd is a busy street where people commute through everyday to get towards Central Eastside and Downtown.

The Hawthorne District in Portland, Oregon, is an area of Southeast Portland on SE Hawthorne Blvd. that runs from 12th to 60th Avenues[1], with the primary core of businesses between 30th and 50th Avenues. The area has numerous retail stores, including clothing shops, restaurants, bars, brewpubs and microbreweries.[2]
The Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association serves local businesses on the boulevard from SE 12th Ave. through SE 60th Ave.[5] While many Business Districts are intrinsically involved with their Neighborhood Association, this stretch of SE Hawthorne Blvd. is tangent to or a boundary of four neighborhoods Buckman, Hosford-Abernethy, Sunnyside, Richmond, and passes into a fifth, Mount Tabor. Portland to Bend, the wild way
What’s a better way to celebrate recovery than a trip through the woods on roads you’ve never seen? That’s actually a bit of a trick question, because I cannot imagine another way to do it. Plus, it gave me an actual goal to work towards.
Let’s ride from Portland-ish to Bend on gravel and Forest Service roads. There, I said it. Who’s in?
Thanks to Ritchey, Schwalbe and The Athletic.

IBTV Inside Peek: Old Sugar Distillery Madison, WI
This week IBTV visits the Old Sugar Distillery on Madison's near east side. Named after an old sugar factory on Madison's east side, the distillery has created a range of small-batch spirits distilled and flavored with Wisconsin ingredients. Products include Americanaki Ouzo, Grappa, Cane & Abe Freshwater Rum, Queen Jennie Whiskey, and Old Sugar Factory Honey Liqueur. The distillery is capitalizing on new state laws that allow the company to have a retail location at its distillery on Main Street. You can visit the distillery for a taste test, tour of the site, and to enjoy a wide range of unique cocktails created with its products. You can also find its products at liquor stores, bars, and restaurants throughout Wisconsin and elsewhere in the United States. The distillery is one of a growing number of craft distilleries in the country, including Wisconsin's five craft distillers, which have recently joined together to form the Wisconsin Distillers Association.

Portland's Iconic Old Town Chinatown Is Overflowing with Human Shit
A few weeks ago, Lucille McAleese was opening her beloved Kells, an Irish-themed pub and restaurant in Portland's Old Town Chinatown. Mornings can make or break your day, and that morning, someone took a big shit right in front of Kells' front door. Lucille's retching and gagging soon turned to anger, so she called the local news, and camera crews swooped in.
Almost everyone who lives, works, or ventures into Old Town Chinatown has stories of routinely having to avoid stepping in coils of human shit. Lucille says that during the summer she finds poop in the parking lot behind Kells almost every night.
Cleaning it up is something you can't ask the staff to do. My husband, Gerard, usually has to do it, Lucille told me. When I see it, I want to throw up. It's a very visceral reaction.
Flanked by the pseudo-cultured Pearl district to the west, Downtown to the south, and the broad Willamette River to the east, Old Town Chinatown houses some of the most iconic parts of the city.
Whenever tourists visit, most of them need to see the White Stag sign, Union Station, and the remnants of the underground tunnels that were used for Shanghaiing unwitting sailors, according to legend.
Ten years ago, Portland was nothing more than the second-biggest city in the drab Pacific Northwest, but it seems like every day some national publication has it atop some internet click-through best-of list. Many out-of-town visitors I talked to in Old Town said they were shocked by the state of the district. Few imagined that waiting in line for a doughnut, or taking a picture under the neon Portland sign, would mean tiptoeing over turds on skid row.
Most of the city's social services are on or around West Burnside Street, the main artery cutting through Old Town Chinatown. With shelters, missions, and soup kitchens come areas of vagrancy, drug use, and overall shadiness. Everybody poops, but not everybody has a private place to slink away and drop a deuce, so the human shit piles up in alleyways, under bridges, and in public parks.

Bayocean, the town that fell into the sea, stands as a warning to the hubris of our ever-spreading society.

How to Select a Real Estate Appraiser - A Quality Appraisal - 503.781.5646
Homeowners typically cannot choose the appraiser when buying a house or refinancing; that task is usually the responsibility of the lender or an appraisal management company. However, when obtaining an appraisal for setting a list price for your property, when purchasing a property from a friend, in the event of a divorce or a death in the family, or for any reason other than a loan, homeowners must select the appraiser. Here is a list of ways to narrow the search for a home appraiser.
1. Experience in the property type and location of the home being appraised is important. I recommend asking prospective appraisers the following three questions. “How often do you appraise in my neighborhood?” “How long have you appraised in my neighborhood?” “Have you appraised any properties similar to mine?”
2. Active involvement in or designation from professional organizations like the Appraisal Institute or National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers are good indicators of appraisers who hold themselves to high standards in their profession. Less than half of all real estate appraisers belong to a professional organization. Searching for an appraiser from the website of these organizations is a good way to begin your search for an appraiser.
3. Distance traveled to the subject property can be a good indicator of competence. Appraisers who must travel a long distance might be qualified, but these appraisers would likely have to work harder to maintain competency than an appraiser who lives in or near your community.
4. Appraisers are accustomed to providing work samples to prospective clients and typically have work samples on hand that they have permission to disclose or have blacked out any private information to satisfy appraiser confidentiality rules. You may not be an expert at recognizing a less than credible appraisal, but comparing work samples from appraisers can show the level professionalism and care that is put into the product.
Check to make sure that your appraiser is licensed or certified and does not have any disciplinary actions. Your state appraiser licensing board can help, or you can search the Appraisal Subcommittee National Registry. Note that not all disciplinary actions will show on the Appraisal Subcommittee site, so it is a good idea to check with your state.
