4K グラバー園 長崎市 Glover Garden Nagasaki Kyushu JAPAN
Glover Garden グラバー園 is a park in Nagasaki, Japan built for Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant who contributed to the modernization of Japan in shipbuilding, coal mining, and other fields. In it stands the Glover Residence, the oldest Western style house surviving in Japan and Nagasaki's foremost tourist attraction.
It is located on the Minamiyamate hillside overlooking Nagasaki harbor. It was built by Hidenoshin Koyama of Amakusa island and completed in 1863. It has been designated as an Important Cultural Asset. As the house and its surroundings are reminiscent of Puccini's opera, it is also known as the Madame Butterfly House. Statues of Puccini and diva Miura Tamaki, famed for her role as Cio-Cio-san, stand in the park near the house. This house was also the venue of Glover's meetings with rebel samurai particularly from the Chōshū and Satsuma domains.
Commanding a stunning view of Nagasaki Harbour from its position on top of the hill of Minami-Yamate, this romantic area retains the atmosphere of a foreign settlement.

Far East 2012 - 07.1 Nagasaki
Friday 12 October - Nagasaki, Japan
Nagasaki, like Hiroshima, is a symbol of the horrors of war. On the island of Kyushu, it also offers charm. Hills surround the bay. Diamond Princess was built here and the city is the setting for Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly.
The ship docked just below Glover Mansion & Gardens, the former home of the Scottish founder of Mitsubishi
We had visited Nagasaki in 2008 when we saw the Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Museum and many of the other attractions including Glover Gardens, Oura Catholic Church, Shimabara, and Arita.
The port is in walking distance of the city and is well served by trams. We caught a tram, then another before alighting in search of Mt Inasa – an 1,100 feet high vantage point to the west of the port. It is reached by cable car once you get to the bottom station, or you can drive to the top.
Les was our guide today and, after alighting from the tram, we turned left confident that the station was not that far away. Wrong - the map needed to be turned 180 degrees!
So we walked up gently sloping hills and stairs past neighbourhood houses, and shrines in search of the river we needed to cross before we were told/realised that we were on the wrong hill/side of the main road!
Nevertheless the walk was very interesting and the bonus was that we saw the site of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan.
We were not that far from the main road so we jaywalked across the road (causing two trams either side of us to slow!), off on a side road, across rail tracks (causing a train to slow because of our presence!), across the river and up to the base station of the cable car. At the top there were magnicient views of the harbour, the sea and Nagasaki itself. We pinpointed Glover Gardens (eventually) and the Peace Statue & Museum.
Down again to re-cross the river and rail tracks near Urakami railway station. We decided to catch another tram downtown and alighted. We paused to get our bearings and were approached by a man seeking to help. We said we were OK but then asked him about restaurants. He led us to a restaurant in the next street which we entered up the stairs. The waitress could not speak much English and the menu was only in Japanese, so her husband/chef/owner appeared to explain and we sat down to a lovely meal of grilled fish on rice, accompanied by pickles, pods of peas and other delicacies. The tea was gone in no time and the meal was delicious.
We obtained directions for shopping and the owner came downstairs with us to point the way. Across the road and a block away was the canal with coy/carp and turtles and we set off to walk down five bridges. The second one was the Spectacles Bridge. A school class walked by saying ‘hello’ in English. At another we were approached by two lots of school children and asked to take their photos. At another, two local ladies approached and we chatted. It turned out they were Jehovah’s Witness Bible students and sure enough not far away were two Japanese men on bicycles distinctively JW.
A block away from the canal was a gigantic mall running in four directions. We inspected three of the wings and then re-boarded the tram to the dock using our all day pass. We took it to the terminus and back one stop to walk back to the ship. Joy spied another store and made some purchases. Then at the dock there were tourist stalls – and free Wi-Fi ! Strangely, the ship’s satellite internet is not accessible or turned off when in Japanese waters due to local regulations.
Back on board, we were entertained by a local high school brass band and dancers as we eventually sailed away.

Madama Butterfly (Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts (originally two acts) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Puccini based his opera in part on the short story Madame Butterfly (1898) by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco. Puccini also based it on the novel Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti. According to one scholar, the opera was based on events that actually occurred in Nagasaki in the early 1890s.
The original version of the opera, in two acts, premiered on February 17, 1904, at La Scala in Milan. It was very poorly received despite the presence of such notable singers as soprano Rosina Storchio, tenor Giovanni Zenatello and baritone Giuseppe De Luca in the lead roles. This was due in large part to the late completion and inadequate time for rehearsals. Puccini revised the opera, splitting the second act into two acts and making other changes. On May 28, 1904, this version was performed in Brescia and was a huge success.
The opera is set in the city of Nagasaki. Japan's best-known opera singer Tamaki Miura won international fame for her performances as Cio-Cio San; her statue, along with that of Puccini, can be found in Nagasaki's Glover Garden.
Butterfly is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire for companies around the world and it is the most-performed opera in the United States, where it ranks as Number 1 in Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

The photos of Nagasaki are taken at the place most likely to be connected with the story, Glover Hill in Nagasaki, the only area in the treaty port of Nagasaki, where foreigners and Japanese were allowed to interact. The old house of Glover was recently designated as the Madame Butterfly House by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce. A bronze statue of Cio Cio san and Puccini are also on display. Glover was a Scottish merchant back in the 1890s, and what he shares with the Puccini opera is only a similar life story, which contrary to the opera had a happy ending. Glover´s Japanese wife was finally integrated into the family.

Oh Mio Babbino Caro
O mio babbino caro (Oh My Beloved Father) is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918), by Giacomo Puccini, to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides a contrasting interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and single-hearted love in the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing and feuding in medieval Florence of Puccini's only comedy, and it provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.
Florence Easton as Lauretta at the world premiere of Gianni Schicchi, 14 December 1918.The aria was first performed at the premiere of Gianni Schicci on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York by the popular Victorian English soprano Florence Easton. It has been sung subsequently by many sopranos. Dame Joan Hammond won a Gold Record in 1969 for 1 million sold copies of this aria.[1]
The aria is frequently performed in concerts and as an encore in recitals by many popular and crossover singers; it is used in films and several bands cover the aria in their own style.

On May 28 of that year, a revised version was performed in Brescia. The revision split the disproportionately long second act in two and included some other minor changes. In its new form, Puccini's opera was a huge success; it crossed the Atlantic to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1907.
The opera is set in the city of Nagasaki and, according to American scholar Arthur Groos, was based on events that actually occurred there in the early 1890s. Today, the opera is enjoyed in two acts in Italy, while in America the three-act version is more popular. As a staple of the standard operatic repertoire, it appears at Number 1 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

Madame Butterfly

Fatemi sapere!
Buon ascolto e alla prossima lettura!
