Puente Viejo, Ronda (Málaga)
Su primera referencia histórica es la reconstrucción tras la reconquista de Ronda por los Reyes Católicos a finales del siglo quince, pero su origen es discutido. Para unos es romano y reconstruido por los árabes, aunque para la mayoría de autores es de construcción musulmana. Se asienta sobre el conglomerado rocoso del lecho del río y consta de un solo arco de 10 metros de diámetro y 31 de alto. Daba entrada a la ciudad por la antigua Puerta de la Puente y la comunicaba con el barrio del Mercadillo.

These are the two older adjoining bridges that are further down below the more prominent Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) which connects old Ronda with the more modern area. The newer bridge affords more spectacular, sweeping views, as well. But, these two more ancient bridges are still unique and fascinating in their own way, boasting a very rich history: they are the original Old Bridge (Puente Viejo), then the later-built Puente Arabe (or Old Arab Bridge). All 3 bridges span the magnificent El Tajo Gorge and Guadalevin River.

Discover Ronda Spain and the Famous Puente Nueva Bridge : 80+ Countries w/3 Kids
Who doesn’t know the famous image of the old bridge of Ronda? It is iconic of the pueblos blancos (the white villages) of southern Spain and seeing this bridge is on the bucket list of many travelers.
The Puente Nueva Bridge (New Bridge) was built in 1793 AD and connects Ronda from Moorish times with the more modern village of Ronda. Both parts of Ronda are divided by the El Tajo Canyon and the river Guadalevín. The New Bridge is one of three bridges in Ronda. You can also find the Roman Bridge (Puente Romano or Puente San Miguel) and the Old Bridge (Puente Árabe or Arab Bridge).

Ronda is a city in the Spanish province of Málaga. It is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of the city of Málaga, within the autonomous community of Andalusia. Its population is approximately 35,000 inhabitants.
Ronda is situated in a very mountainous area. The Guadalevín River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100 plus meters deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches.Three bridges, Puente Romano, Puente Viejo and Puente Nuevo span the canyon.
American artists Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles spent many summers in Ronda as part-time residents of Ronda's old town quarter called La Ciudad.

Spain Trip: Day 8 Ronda & Granada
Day 8. We are still in Arcos de la Frontera, and visiting the Puente Viejo during the morning this time around. After a short visit at the old bridge, we made our way to Ronda.
The reason for the shortness of this video, is that it was about a 3-hour drive. Include little pit stops, and reducing our speeds (we did get a speeding ticket), you blow the majority of the day.
Driving in Granada is pretty hard. If you are not a resident of Granada, there are many places that you are not allowed to drive. This made for a round about way to get to the area that had the tickets we needed for Alhambra.
After picking up the tickets, grabbing a late lunch and checking out the cathedral, we then made our way to our hostel. The hostel was conveniently located a 10 minute walk away from Alhambra, but this made it really hard to get to from the city below.
The night is finished with a quick trip over to a vista point of Alhambra, and then dinner at a Michelin recommended restaurant (La Milagrosa).

Ronda è un comune spagnolo di 36.827 abitanti situato nella comunità autonoma dell'Andalusia.
È una delle più antiche e belle cittadine andaluse che, in parte, conserva la sua antica struttura araba. È situata su un pianoro a strapiombo verso occidente elevato a 200 metri sulla sottostante pianura nella regione detta Serrania. Una profonda impressionante spaccatura (tajo) su una larghezza di 60-80 metri e con uno strapiombo di 160 metri sul torrente Guadalevín divide la città in due parti unite dal Puente Nuevo costruito nel 1784-88. Altri due ponti sono: uno di costruzione romana (Puente de San Miguel) e uno di origine araba (Puente Viejo) ricostruito.
La città confina ad est con il parco naturale della Sierra de las Nieves, a sud con la Valle del Genal, ad ovest con la Sierra de Grazalema ed a nord con delle pianure nella direzione di Campillos. Le comunicazioni con i territori confinanti è garantita da una rete stradale che attraversa numerosi valichi di montagna offrendo alla vista dei viaggiatori un meraviglioso paesaggio. Il trasporto su rotaia è effettuato con i treni Talgo che vanno verso Algeciras e Madrid.
La città antica conserva gli edifici di origine araba con strade strette e tortuose. La città è anche nota per avere la più antica Plaza de toros di Spagna per lo spettacolo della corrida, famosa anche per la sua rinomata scuola di equitazione.

Ronda is situated in a very mountainous area about 750 m above mean sea level. The Guadalevín River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100 plus meters deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches. The Spanish Fir (Abies pinsapo) is endemic to the mountains surrounding Ronda.

Three bridges, Puente Romano (Roman Bridge, also known as the Puente San Miguel), Puente Viejo (Old Bridge, also known as the Puente Árabe or Arab Bridge) and Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), span the canyon. The term nuevo is a bit of a misnomer, as the building of this bridge commenced in 1751 and took until 1793 to complete. The Puente Nuevo is the tallest of the bridges, towering 120 metres (390 ft) above the canyon floor, and all three serve as some of the city's most impressive features. The former town hall, which sits next to the Puente Nuevo, is the site of a parador, and has a view of the Tajo canyon.
The ‘Corrida Goyesca’ is a unique and historical bullfight that takes place once a year in Ronda in the Plaza de toros de Ronda, the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain.[4] It was built in 1784 in the Neoclassical style by the architect José Martin de Aldehuela, who also designed the Puente Nuevo.
The partially intact Baños árabes (Arab baths) are found below the city and date back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

The current Ronda (Andalusia) is of Roman origins, having been founded as a fortified post in the Second Punic War. Ronda was part of the Visigoth reign until 713, when it fell to the Arabs.During this period Ronda received most of its Islamic architectural heritage. The Islamic domination ended in 1485, when it was conquered by the Spanish. Subsequently, mostly of the city's old walls, gates. mosques and public buildings were renewed or adapted to Christian roles, while numerous others were built in newly-created quarters such as Mercadillo and San Francisco. Three bridges, Puente Romano, Puente Viejo and Puente Nuevo, span the canyon. EN: The Puente Nuevo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpwente ˈnweβo], New Bridge) is the newest and largest of three bridges that span the 120-metre (390 ft)-deep chasm that carries the Guadalevín River and divides the city of Ronda, in southern Spain. The architect was José Martin de Aldehuela, who died in Málaga in 1802. The chief builder was Juan Antonio Díaz Machuca.
The construction was started in 1751 and took 42 years to build. Fifty workers were killed during its construction. There is a chamber above the central arch that was used for a variety of purposes, including as a prison. During the 1936-1939 civil war both sides allegedly used the prison as a torture chamber for captured opponents, killing some by throwing them from the windows to the rocks at the bottom of the El Tajo gorge. The chamber is entered through a square building that was once the guard-house. It now contains an exhibition describing the bridge's history and construction.

Ronda, Spain - El Tajo Gorge & Puente Nuevo Bridge
The Puente Nuevo Bridge is also called the New Bridge since it is the newer of the 3 bridges that span the El Tajo Gorge (and Guadalevín River). It is a stunning piece of work and the views from it are spectacular, as are the views below looking up toward the bridge. We spent 3 wonderful days in Ronda and this was definitely one of the major highlights of the trip.
