44. Punkaharju Esker Nature Reserve, Finland
This seven-kilometer esker, or sand ridge, was formed during the Ice Age and has been an important trade route in eastern Finland for millennia. Calm lakes lie on either side and tall pines provide shade for moss, toadstools and blueberries -- easy to see how fairy tales are born. You expect a frog with a crown to hop off the nearest giant mushroom, or a mystical hand to reach out of the lake.

When the frozen Lake Saimaa and the beautiful Punkaharju ridge, Finland's national landscape, turned into natures own skating playground January 2016. Follow us in Facebook:
Every winter our resort makes a 15km long tour skating route in these ponds and lake Pihlajavesi you see on the film. About once in 15 years though, you get this kind of skating conditions in the first few days of winter. Enjoy. :)

Punkaharju Resort
Punkaharju Resort sijaitsee Saimaan rannalla, 27 km päässä Savonlinnan keskustasta, Suomen yhdellä kauneimmista alueista. Punkaharju Resort on avoinna vieraille läpi vuoden. Saimaan upea järviluonto tarjoaa poikkeuksellisen hyvät mahdollisuudet ulkoiluun ja rentoutumiseen kaikkina vuodenaikoina.
Kesällä Punkaharjulla veneillään, pyöräillään, melotaan ja nautitaan elämästä. Talvella hiihdetään, retkiluistellaan ja lumikenkäillään. Tarvittavat varusteet voi tuoda mukanaan tai vuokrata alueelta. Hiihto-, luistelu- ja moottorikelkkareitit alkavat Punkaharju Resortin pihapiiristä. Vain muutaman sadan metrin päässä Resortin alueelta alkaa Punkaharjun luonnonsuojelualue sekä luonnonvarakeskuksen tutkimus- ja puulajipuisto.

Punkaharju Museotie
Harju on vanha kulkureitti, jota ovat käyttäneet niin eläimet kuin ihmisetkin. Entisaikojen eränkävijöille harju tarjosi luontaisen kulkureitin vesistöjen poikki. Ensimmäisen maantien rakensivat harjulle venäläiset jo 1700-luvulla. Punkaharjun kautta kulki tieyhteys Savonlinnasta Viipuriin. Tätä reittiä käyttivät monet sotajoukotkin. Tie kulki paikoitellen kapean ja jyrkkärinteisen harjun laella ja sitä pidettiin varsin vaarallisena. Tämä saattoikin olla yksi syy, miksi Venäjän keisari Aleksanteri I antoi jo vuonna 1803 määräyksen säästää harjumetsät hakkaamiselta; tiheään kasvavat harjumännyt muodostivat luonnollisen suojan tieltä suistumista vastaan. Harjutie sai päällysteen 1950-luvulla ja 1976 valmistui ohikulkutie, joka ohjaa osan liikenteestä pois harjulta. Pätkä alkuperäistä, päällystämätöntä harjutietä on säilynyt Valtionhotellin eteläpuolella ja siihen voi tutustua jalkaisin.
