Set in the center of Ubud Bali with traditional art market just in front of it, Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren) is an artistic cultural life center. The existence of Ubud palace is equipped by a Wantilan/auditorium that is a large building of meeting room and a banyan tree as shelter place at the daytime.

Royal Palace Puri Saren Agung in Ubud, dating back to sixteenth century (Bali Indonesia)
The palace of the ancient kings of Ubud is located in the center of the town. Build in the sixteenth century. In the 30s of the last century, even before the Indonesian independence, the monarchy was abolished. The palace is now on display largely free, but still live at the back of the royal family descendants. The grandeur of Ubuds royal palace dating back to the 1890s, the time of warlord Cokorda Gede Sukawati. The current walls and elegant gates are predominantly the work of the master I Gusti Nyoman Lempad. The puri (palace) remains influential and gives lot of money to local ceremonies. There are regular dance performances given in the palace.

The palace was the official residence of the royal family of Ubud. It was on his travels that Rsi Markaneya received a divine revelation that in Bali he was to bury five precious metals on a mountain slope where the mother temple of Besakih now stands today. Along with a group of followers, Rsi Markaneya was magnetically attracted to a destination located in the central foothills of the island that radiated light and energy. This place was Campuhan in Ubud at a junction in the Wos River and it was here that he felt compelled to build a temple by the name of Pura Gunung Lebah.

Ubud Royal Palace History
During the time of Majapahit Kingdom collapsed which is in the 15th century, there was a massive migration from Javanese nobles from Java to Bali island. Then the Javanese noble creates the Gelgel Kingdom in Klungkung district, a small district located in the southeastern part of Bali island.
In the 17th century, Gelgel kingdom spread the power and regional expansion to other places in Bali and created small royal palace, one of them is Sukawati royal palace.
The Gelgel Kingdom sent their prince to the village area of Sukawati. To build a royal palace with incredible architectural beauty to be intended for power in the Gianyar region. During the Sukawati royal palace construction, many Balinese artists sent to the Sukawati area, to assist the castle construction. After the building of the castle in Sukawati completed, many of the artists chose to stay in Sukawati. Therefore, until now, Sukawati area became the center of beautiful art in Bali. Such as dance, painting, sculpture, Balinese art music.
Sukawati Kingdom
After succeeding in building a Sukawati palace at the end of the 17th century. Sukawati King sent his warriors, lead by his two brothers to secure Ubud’s area from constant conflict. The conflict that occurred in Ubud at the end of the 17th century is between two cousins. One in the area of Padang Tegal Ubud. The other one is in the Ubud Park area, which is located in the north area Padang Tegal Ubud.
Sukawati King brother his name is Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan, who sent to Peliatan area of Ubud. Another brother who is Tjokorde Tangkeban sent to Sambahan Ubud.
The two brothers of the King Sukawati then built the palace in their respective destination with the aim of securing the area of Ubud. After Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan who established the kingdom in Peliatan Ubud, then Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan with the help of King Mengwi, fills the area of Ubud with residents. With the growing number of residents in Ubud, the Ubud economy began to grow.
Dutch Colonial
In the 19th century, the Dutch colonial began to enter the island of Bali. Some kingdoms, for example, the kingdom of Mengwi, feel unhappy about the Dutch presence in their area. Dutch ingenuity capable of provoking old enemies of the realm of Mengwi, to make alliances to attack the kingdom of Mengwi. Because many enemies attacked the kingdom of Mengwi, the Mengwi Empire suffered a lethargic fatigue, which caused their territory to be divided by the royal alliance kingdom.
Finally, the Dutch government began to interfere in Bali political affairs in the early 19th century. By attacking the kingdoms of Badung, the kingdom of Buleleng and the kingdom of Klungkung. The great battle ensued, this war in Bali better known by the name Puputan.
In the early 21st century under the rule of Tjokorde Gede Raka Sukawati. The area of Ubud became the branch area of Sukawati. In 1981, Ubud became a sub district of Gianyar regency. By enclosing the areas of Tegallalang, Peliatan, Mas and Kedewatan villages.
Ubud Tourism History
In the early 1930s, many foreign tourists came to Bali, mainly visiting the area of Ubud. Why only in Ubud? Due to the language ability of Tjokorde Gede Agung Sukawati who ruled Ubud (Raja Sukawati’s brother – Tjokorde Gede Raka Sukawati) in English and Dutch. King Sukawati (brother of Ubud King) have a significant role in Ubud tourism development. King Sukawati invited Walter Spiers (painter) to live in Ubud.
Walter Spiers create a trend and influence other foreign artists to stay in Ubud through his painting. During arts exhibition abroad, the paintings reimagined depicts life in Ubud. Therefore, Ubud becomes famous worldwide.
Tjokorde Gede Agung (king of Ubud), Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet create a painting Association. As well with the help of as several local artists named Pita Maha. The aim of this painting Association is to unite Balinese artists and to teach arts painting to young people in the Ubud area. Therefore, until now, Ubud Bali became the center the art museum in Bali.
Entrance Fee, Opening Hour & Dress Code.
So how much is the entrance fee to Ubud Royal Palace? All visitor are welcome to enter the Ubud Royal Palace without an entrance fee, so it is free entry. How about the dress code? Most visitors are wearing short and sandal when entering the palace ground. Therefore there is no specific dress code. If you want to wear a sarong, it is also fine. For the opening hours from 09:00 – 18:00.

The Balinese village of Ubud can trace its roots to as far back as the 8th century. The 2 sisters are high trained in the Balinesian dance. One of the sisters has travled around the world to perform in a Balinesian dance show. In their work their are verry serious, But if you talk to both of them their are verry frendly. Specially the girl in whit the ponytail.

The Ubud Art Market, locally referred to as 'Pasar Seni Ubud' is located opposite the the Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace and is open daily. Here you can find beautiful silk scarves, lightweight shirts, handmade woven bags, baskets or hats; statues, kites and many other hand-crafted goods.
Most of the goods found at the Ubud Market are made in the neighbouring villages of Pengosekan, Tegallalang, Payangan and Peliatan. The location of the Ubud Art Market which is centred among the art producing villages, and being just opposite the royal palace which is a centre point to Ubud itself, make it a strategic shopping place for Balinese handicrafts and souvenirs.
The Ubud market also serves as a setting for the Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, which shows a scene where actress Julia Roberts opposite a male character strolling through the stalls which are frequently visited by foreign and domestic visitors in real life. Naturally, bargaining is essential.
