A. S. Pushkin Museum Preserve
Pushkin’s poetical motherland is considered to be Zakharovo and Viazemy estates near Moscow as he spent his childhood here. At these very places Pushkin saw the beauty of Russian nature, peasants’ ritual dances, heard folk songs, saw the life of rich and province upper class people for the first time. Here he formed his life outlook, began to write his first poems. It is the place of his formation as a national poet. Pushkin came back to these places at the most difficult periods of his life.
Nowadays there is the State historical and literary museum preserve of A.S. Pushkin at the territory of two estates. Coming to these places you can wander the ancient parks paths where the great poet walked as well as breathe this magic air and touch the dumb witnesses of the poet’s childhood – marvellous architecture monuments which are united in a whole XVI—XIX centuries palace and park ensemble: the Transfiguration church, belfry dated the end of XVI century, palace and two wings dated the XVIII century, household outbuildings, parks, ponds of the XVI—XIX centuries. In total there are more than 20 historical and cultural monuments on the territory of Viazemy.
These places are related to the key events if the Russian history: the Time of Troubles, Peter’s transformations, 1812 Patriotic War, Civil War and Great patriotic War. Boris Godunov, Lzhedmitriy I, Petr I, Pavel I, Kutuzov, Napoleon, Bagration, N.V. Gogol, L.N. Tolstoy, M. Tsvetaeva, A. Akhmatova and many other world known people came here.

Walking through the halls of the Winter Palace
The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Today, the restored palace forms part of a complex of buildings housing the Hermitage Museum. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 as depicted in Soviet paintings and Eisenstein's 1927 film October became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.
The palace was constructed on a monumental scale that was intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. From the palace, the Tsar ruled over 22,400,000 square kilometers (8,600,000 sq mi) (almost 1/6 of the Earth's landmass) and over 125 million subjects by the end of the 19th century. It was designed by many architects, most notably Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style. The green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle, and its principal façade is 250 meters (820 ft) long and 30 m (98 ft) high. The Winter Palace has been calculated to contain 1,786 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms, and 117 staircases. Following a serious fire, the palace's rebuilding of 1837 left the exterior unchanged, but large parts of the interior were redesigned in a variety of tastes and styles, leading the palace to be described as a 19th-century palace inspired by a model in Rococo style.
In 1905, the Bloody Sunday massacre occurred when demonstrators marched toward the Winter Palace, but by this time the Imperial Family had chosen to live in the more secure and secluded Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo and returned to the Winter Palace only for formal and state occasions. Following the February Revolution of 1917, the palace was for a short time the seat of the Russian Provisional Government, led by Alexander Kerensky. Later that same year, the palace was stormed by a detachment of Red Army soldiers and sailors—a defining moment in the birth of the Soviet state.

PUSHKIN MUSEUM 100 YEAR'S OLD
(29 May 2012) LEADIN
Moscow's Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art is marking its hundreth anniversary.
It houses world renowned art and artefacts from antiquity to the modern day.
STORYLINE
Jacques-Louis David's painting - the Portrait of Alphonse Leroy shows his subject as a writer, a thinker and someone who had his finger on the pulse of society in 1783.
It's one of several world famous paintings that adorn the walls of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art in the Russian capital.
Also on show: the Portrait of Prince Baltasar Carlos on horseback by Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velasquez, bearing a staff of command and wearing a general's sash.
Plus there's Happy Family by Louise Le Nain, dated 1642.
For one hundred years the museum has educated and entertained Muscovites and visitors to the city.
An historical retrospective of the museum's life is now on show pointing out the highlights of the museum's past 100 years.
The centenary exhibition includes photos, films and historical documents.
It charts the social and political changes the museum has undergone since it opened in 1912.
Head of the Manuscript Department at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art Margarita Aksenenko says preparing the centenary exhibition was a huge task.
100 years is a date with round figures and as with any institution it's worth celebrating and telling the story of our history. We faced many difficulties preparing this exhibition that our history. It (the history of the museum) is massive, dramatic and with many levels and to put it in an exhibition format was very difficult. This exhibition is a summary, a condensed version. Nevertheless here are present the main periods and events that explains all parts of this long 100 years story.
Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art Irina Antonova says the museum has pieces from around the world.
This is a museum of global artistic culture. It's peculiarity is that here we have art from around the world, foreign art, but also large collections of Russian art especially graphics, Numismatics (the study or collection of currency), and, if you include the museum's private collections, painting as well. The main theme of museum is the dialogue of cultures.
Head of Art and Archaeology of the Ancient World Vladimir Tolstikov says he is very proud of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art.
Our museum has contributed to the nation's science, art, museum management studies and to the enlightenment of our nation. That's has happened since the beginning of it's existence in 1912 until today.
Director of the Liechtenstein collection in Vienna, Austria Johan Kreftnann, says over the years the museum has provided the Russian people with a valuable resource.
Here (in Russia) people couldn't travel so much in that period, so people could come to this place and study things. It's a unique situation for students, for children here to go and to see world objects on one place, connected. Especially what's in the Renaissance gallery for instance, also in the Antique Gallery here. What's here collected in one place, you can compare things as you can never do except the exhibitions in other foreign places so it really make sense what happens.
The largest museum of European art in Moscow looks set to continue its success well into the future.

Puškin syntyi Moskovassa. Isänsä puolelta hän kuului Venäjän aateliin. Hänen äidinpuoleisen isoisänsä isä oli Etiopian seudulta vuonna 1701 Konstantinopoliin tuotu afrikkalainen orja Ibrahim Petrovitš Gannibal, jonka Venäjän Turkin-suurlähettiläs Savva Raguzinski adoptoi vuonna 1704. as born into Russian nobility in Moscow. He published his first poem at the age of 15, and was widely recognized by the literary establishment by the time of his graduation from the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. Upon graduation from the Lycee, Pushkin recited his controversial poem Ode to Liberty, one of several that led to his being exiled by Tsar Alexander the First. While under the strict surveillance of the Tsar's political police and unable to publish, Pushkin wrote his most famous play, the drama Boris Godunov. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, was serialized between 1825 and 1832. ärineb Puškinite tituleerimata aadlisuguvõsast, mis genealoogilise legendi järgi pärineb ausast mehest Ratšast (мужу честну Ратше). Pushkin's statue on Pushkin Square, Moscow.
A S Pushkin is widely considered to be the most magnificent poet in the Russian language. I made one mistake in this video. Pushkin was born in Moscow but he spent most of his life in St Petersburg. Some of his juvenilia was risque. His later work was more uplifting.

Saint Petersburg is the most paper book reading city of Russia, according to the amount of bookstores per capita. No wonder though. Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Gogol, Dovlatov and Brodsky is just a short-list of world-famous writers who lived in St Petersburg.
The largest chain of bookstores in St. Petersburg, called Bukvoed what literally means Letter Eater. 143 bookstores in the city and Leningrad region.
In the historical city center they seem like everywhere. I came to one of them located right in front of the Guest Yard (Gostiny Dvor) at Nevsky Prospect.

USA: WASHINGTON: ALEXANDER PUSHKIN STATUE
Eng/Russ/Nat
A bronze statue of Alexander Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet, was dedicated Wednesday in a ceremony attended by U-S and Russian officials.
The nearly 10-foot tall statue is a gift from the city of Moscow.
The statue depicts the 19th century poet standing next to a pillar upon which sits a brightly gilded image of Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology that long has been regarded as the source of poetic inspiration.
Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot said the event was a small but important symbol of the cooperation of the United States and Russia in the wake of the Cold War.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There are obviously lots of tough issues between the United States and Russia. That's because there are lots of tough problems in the world today for which there are no easy or automatic answers. Secretary Albright, foreign minister Ivanov have based their work together on a very simple principal, which is that we are more likely to find the solutions to those problems if we work together.
SUPER CAPTION: Strobe Talbot, Deputy Secretary of State
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov presented the monument in a ceremony on the George Washington University campus near the White House that ended with champagne toasts after a blessing and the sprinkling of holy water by a Russian Orthodox priest.
Ivanov said Pushkin's poetry long has been a symbol of the Russian national spirit.
Two centuries after the poet's birth, he said, it is becoming an organic part of the global spiritual heritage.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
His art is a national treasure of Russia, but also, far beyond the borders of my country, millions of people value this great poet for his unwavering fidelity to the ideals of beauty, freedom, patriotism and morals.
SUPER CAPTION: Igor Ivanov, Russian Foreign Minister
Pushkin, who was born in 1799, was a political reformist who admired George Washington and the American revolution.
Pushkin died in 1837 of wounds suffered in a duel.
