Quanzhou marionettes continue to entertain with the help of the youth
Hong Jindiao, a young artist from Quanzhou Puppet Troupe, broke into a sweet smile when he recalled his journey to mastering Quanzhou marionettes. At that time, there were vacancies in the marionette class, and it was still recruiting students. The school principal asked if I would like to join, and I said ‘Yes.' From then on, I have been studying it for 11 years,” Hong said.

This was my entry for the World Nomads Travel Scholarship.
(Note: While this video didn't win the contest, it got shortlisted, which is kind of cool. My first time doing a documentary, trying to get better, so please comment if you have any ideas on how this video could have been better.
For example, after seeing the winners, I think I could have used some music, and maybe had more b-roll of the area around the market. Also need to work on my sound recording. Any other ideas?)

City farms on rooftops gain momentum in China, helping to bring rural traditions to cities
Living in cities and surrounded by skyscrapers, rural landscapes may have faded from many people’s memories. But in Chengdu city of southwest China’s Sichuan, a man has been trying to bring a little bit of the countryside to the urban environment. Crops, vegetables, and even animals…Not in the countryside, but on rooftops. Liu Bo, the founder of the city farms, says he wants to pass on the Chinese agricultural traditions to the younger generation who live in the cities.

EP4: The Successors of Nanyin
While succession planning remains an uphill challenge in the traditional Chinese music scene, Siong Leng Musical Association stands out as one of the few organisations that is predominantly managed by a younger generation of practitioners. Despite the uncertain future of traditional Chinese music in Singapore, the younger members of Siong Leng valiantly continue to find ways of sharing their passion for Nanyin with their peers.

About The Forefathers Project:
The Forefathers Project was initiated by TENG in 2016 to uncover and explore the music of Singapore’s early Chinese migrants. Over the course of four years, TENG interviewed, documented and learnt from a community of first-generation masters, luthiers, instrument dealers and proteges from local Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew and Hakka traditions to shed light on the lesser-known elements of Singapore’s Chinese music heritage.
--
About The TENG Ensemble:
The TENG Ensemble is a critically acclaimed Singaporean Chinese fusion music group that bridges between cultures East and West, boasting musical influences from both the traditional and the contemporary.
As a collective of music educators, scholars and award-winning instrumentalists, the Ensemble’s performances have been a staple in Singapore’s arts scene since 2009. At the 2015 National Day Rally, The TENG Ensemble was described by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as ‘creating something uniquely Singapore’.
The group has performed at events such as the ASEAN Tourism Forum, TEDxPetaling Street, Youth Olympic Games, Shanghai World Expo, Singapore Day in Melbourne, George Town Festival and Singapore International Jazz Festival.
The Ensemble’s two full-length albums were both rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by The Straits Times and their second album ‘Stories from an Island City’ peaked at #1 on Hong Kong’s iTunes World Music Chart. In 2018, the group was awarded the CHT International Award for Musical Performance and Education.

Demolition Day
This is it! Demolition of the old garage. The City of Richmond has been a great supporter of our efforts over the years. In addition to our free lease in Terra Nova Rural Park, office space, and incalculable additional in-kind support; we were able to use the garage for several years when our operations began to grow.
How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance--and Why They Fall
Chua was born in Champaign, Illinois, to ethnic Chinese parents with Hoklo ancestry who emigrated from the Philippines. Her parents raised her speaking Hokkien.[2] Her father, Leon O. Chua, is an electrical engineering and computer sciences professor at the University of California, Berkeley.[3] His ancestral hometown is Quanzhou, Fujian.[4] Chua's mother was born in China in 1936, before relocating to the Philippines at the age of 2.[2] She subsequently converted to Catholicism in high school and graduated from the University of Santo Tomas, with a degree in chemical engineering, magna cum laude.[2] Chua's parents lived in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation in World War II and were liberated by Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his troops.[5]
Chua was raised as a Roman Catholic and lived in West Lafayette, Indiana.[6] When she was 8 years old, her family moved to Berkeley, California.
Chua described herself as an ugly kid during her school days; she was bullied in school for her foreign accent (which she has since lost) and was the target of racial slurs from several classmates.[7] Chua went to El Cerrito High School and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with an A.B. in economics in 1984 from Harvard College, where she was named an Elizabeth Cary Agassiz Scholar and a John Harvard Scholar. She obtained her J.D. cum laude in 1987 from Harvard Law School,[8] where she was the first Asian American officer of the Harvard Law Review, serving as executive editor.[9][10] After law school, Chua clerked for Chief Judge Patricia M. Wald on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Washington, D.C.
Chua has written four books: two studies of international affairs, a parenting memoir, and her most recent on ethnic-American culture and its correlation with socio-economic success within the United States.
Her first book, World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability (2003), explores the ethnic conflict caused in many societies by disproportionate economic and political influence of market dominant minorities and the resulting resentment in the less affluent majority. World on Fire, which was a New York Times bestseller, selected by The Economist as one of the Best Books of 2003,[11] and named by Tony Giddens in The Guardian as one of the Top Political Reads of 2003,[12] examines how globalization and democratization since 1989 have affected the relationship between market-dominant minorities and the wider population.
Her second book, Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance—and Why They Fall (2007), examines seven major empires and posits that their success depended on their tolerance of minorities.
Chua's third book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, published in January 2011, is a memoir about her parenting journey using strict Confucianist child rearing techniques, which she describes as being typical for Chinese immigrant parents.[13] Although the book is often portrayed as a how-to manual for parenting, Chua herself describes it as a complex account of how children can become rebellious and alienated when one-size-fits-all education philosophies are applied, regardless of their personality or aptitudes.[14] The book was an international bestseller in the United States, South Korea, Poland, Israel, Germany, United Kingdom, and China, and has been translated into 30 languages.[15][16] The book also received a huge backlash and media attention and ignited global debate about different parenting techniques and cultural attitudes that foster such techniques.[17] Furthermore, the book provoked uproar after the release where Chua received death threats, racial slurs, and calls for her arrest on child-abuse charges.[7] The book continues to be highly influential. In January 2016, David Cameron praised Tiger Mothers, stating It is what the Tiger Mothers' battle hymn is all about: work, try hard, believe you can succeed, get up and try again.
