UK Queen leaves Sandringham church service
(8 Jan 2017) UK QUEEN LEAVES SANDRINGHAM CHURCH SERVICE
Queen Elizabeth II attended church near her rural Sandringham estate Sunday (8 JAN. 2016), having missed the previous two Sundays due to ill health.
The 90-year-old British monarch was applauded by well-wishers as she arrived by car at St. Mary Magdalene Church.
It was her first public appearance in several weeks.
The queen is a regular churchgoer, but missed the Christmas Day service for the first time in decades due to what Buckingham Palace said was a heavy cold.
She also did not attend on New Year's Day as she continued to recover.

Old Photographs Anniesland Glasgow Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Anniesland, Scottish Gaelic: Fearann Anna, a district in the West End of the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde, and centres on the junction of the Great Western Road and Crow Road; also known as Anniesland Cross. Originally a farm owned by the Jordanhill estate, it was slowly sold off during the late Victorian era as Glasgow quickly expanded. Barr & Stroud Limited on Crow Road in Anniesland was a pioneering Glasgow optical engineering firm. They played a leading role in the development of modern optics, including rangefinders, for the Royal Navy and for other branches of British Armed Forces during the 20th century. Archibald Barr and William Stroud had been associated from as early as 1888 when the two men were professors of, respectively, engineering and physics at the Yorkshire College, now the University of Leeds in England. In 1891 they were approached by the Admiralty to submit a design for a short base rangefinder for trial. By this time, Barr had returned to Scotland and taken the post of Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Glasgow. Although apart, Barr and Stroud kept in close touch and in 1892 they were awarded with a contract for six of their rangefinders. In 1895, Barr & Stroud's Patents Ltd was renting workshop space near the university, at 250 Byres Road, Glasgow, but demand for the product soon necessitated a move to larger premises in Ashton Lane, Glasgow. By 1904, 100 men were working for the company in a new purpose built factory in Anniesland, Glasgow designed by Campbell Douglas. Shortly thereafter, in 1909, Stroud resigned his chair at University of Leeds and moved to Glasgow to work for the company full time. Barr, in spite of a distinguished teaching career at Glasgow University, followed his example in 1913. Together they formed Barr & Stroud Limited that year. Temple Parish Church united with Anniesland to form Temple Anniesland in 1984 and the original buildings are now demolished.

The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building of Glasgow City Chambers was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 square metres. In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the Glasgow City Chambers complex to some 14,000 square metres.
The new City Chambers initially housed Glasgow Town Council from 1888 to 1895, when it was replaced by Glasgow Corporation. It remained the Corporation's headquarters until it was replaced by Glasgow District Council under the wider Strathclyde Regional Council in May 1975. The City Chambers has been the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since April 1996, when it replaced the District Council with the abolition of the Strathclyde Region.

Queen dons vibrant coat as she gets Gaelic welcome at Scottish school
The Queen, 93, put on a colourful display as she visited Greenfaulds high school in Cumbernauld on Friday. Her Majesty donned a lemon outfit and matching hat, and accessorised with pearls. During her visit, the royal will be invited to view an exhibition and the headteacher, together with local historians, will explain the school's history. She will be treated to a Gaelic song by the students and will then present awards to pupils and staff before receiving a posy and unveiling a plaque to mark the visit.

Pope welcomes Charles and Camila to the Vatican
Pope Benedict welcomed the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to the Vatican together for the first time. The visit is part of a two day tour of Italy as Charles campaigns for environmental reforms.
Their visit to the Vatican comes after Prime Minister Gordon Browns recent announcement of his intention to address an antiquated law in the United Kingdom that prohibits a Catholic from ascending to the throne.

Professor Phillip Goyret says that the United Kingdom has come a long way in the last century with regards to civil rights and Catholics.
And though he says this law is a form of religious discrimination, he admits getting rid of it is a lot more complicated than it seems.

With respect to Catholics and the crown of England, the problem is not simple because the queen or king of England is at the same time the head of the Church of England. So if a Catholic becomes king or Queen he would be also the head of the Church of England. Which is strange.
Though there seems to be no quick solution to the hindering law, Goyret hopes the U.K can start dissecting the issue from different angles.

Maybe then what has to change is this policy, no? Why the head of the Church of England has to be the king or the queen? I think thats the area and the matters that should be studied better.
The law, called the 1701 Act of Settlement, was designed to ensure Protestant ascension to the throne in the United Kingdom. Today its harshly criticised by Catholics who label it religious discrimination.
The Pope will probably visit England in the spring of 2010 at the invitation of Prime Minister Gordon Brown. There are wide expectations that he will beatify Cardinal John Newman while on his visit.

Hamilton is a town in South Lanarkshire, in the central Lowlands of Scotland. Hamilton serves as the main administrative centre of the South Lanarkshire council area. Hamilton is the fourth-biggest town in Scotland.
Hamilton sits 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Glasgow, 35 miles (56 km) south-west of Edinburgh and 74 miles (120 km) north of Carlisle, Cumbria. Hamilton is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water. Hamilton is the later county town of Lanarkshire which was preceded anciently by Lanark.
The Hamiltons constructed many landmark buildings in the area including the Hamilton Mausoleum in Strathclyde Park, which has the longest echo of any building in the world. The Hamilton family are major land-owners in the area to this day. Hamilton Palace was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton until the early-twentieth century.
Other historic buildings in the area include Hamilton Old Parish Church, a Georgian era building completed in 1734 and the only church to have been built by William Adam. The graveyard of the old parish church contains some Covenanter remains. The former Edwardian Town Hall now houses the library and concert hall. The Townhouse complex underwent a sympathetic modernization in 2002 and opened to the public in summer 2004. The ruins of Cadzow Castle also lie in Chatelherault Country Park, 2 miles (3 km) from the town centre.
Hamilton Palace was the largest non-royal residence in the Western world, located in the north-east of the town. A former seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, it was built in 1695, subsequently much enlarged, and demolished in 1921 due to ground subsidence. It is widely acknowledged as having been one of the grandest houses in Scotland, was visited and admired by Queen Victoria, and was written about by Daniel Defoe.
Hamilton Barracks was formerly the Depot of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and the home of the 1st Battalion of the Regiment. The Regimental Museum is part of the Low Parks Museum. The Low Parks Museum is housed in what was a 16th-century inn and a staging post for journeys between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Recently refurbished, it is the oldest building in Hamilton and is to the north of the Palace Grounds.
By road the town is to the west of the M74 motorway, the main southerly link to England, which joins the M6 just north of Carlisle. The main route from Edinburgh is the M8, leaving at junctions 6 or 7.

Hamilton has three railway stations, Hamilton Central, Hamilton West and Chatelherault on the Argyle Line's Hamilton Circle. Hamilton Central is 22 minutes from Glasgow on the limited stop Larkhall-Dalmuir service. It was once served by the North British Railway, which had three stations in the area. Hamilton (NBR), Peacock Cross railway station and Burnbank. Beside Hamilton Central lies Hamilton bus station, providing links to surrounding towns and cities, also offering an express bus to Glasgow and also some parts of England.
