Queen Califia's Magical Circle
Most state names are derived from a Native American word or as a homage to English royalty. California, however, got its name from an early 16th-century Spanish romance novel by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo called Las Sergas de Esplandián in which California is described as an island east of the Asian mainland ruled by Queen Calafia and populated only by beautiful Amazonian women wielding gold weapons. The weapons were made exclusively of gold because that was the only metal available on the island. Before the Spanish started exploring the Pacific coast, the name California was already on the maps. When they came across the Baja Peninsula, they mistook it for an island, and the name just stuck.

Calafia, also called Califia, has been depicted as the Spirit of California, and has been the subject of modern-day sculpture, paintings, stories and films; she often figures in the myth of California’s origin, symbolizing an untamed and bountiful land prior to Europeans taking the land by force.

I apologize once again for the quality of the video. My movie editing software has a mind of its own and I never know what the end result is no matter how many times I try to fix the errors. Soon I will get a new program that works. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

Queen Califia Magical Circle | Date with Stranger I met| Rock Garden #queencalifiamagicalcircle
Hidden Place is San Diego was one of my goals when I moved there for 1 year. After being there for 2 weeks, I found Queen Califia's Magical Garden (blog post attached below for my details), and as I was there I asked a guy to take a picture of me and he invited me out for Vegan food (same day), he took me to a hidden rock garden (blog post below), and then to moonlight state beach. I typically say no to going out with a stranger I just met randomly at a garden, but I was new to San Diego and decided that I needed to meet new people, so I said yes to his offer and we drove our separate cars to the location. It was one of the best adventures out in San Diego for me.

One Ancestor a Day - Queen Calafia
California may have been mentioned for the first time in The Adventures of Esplandian, a novel published in Toledo, Spain around 1516. It was noted as an island paradise wealthy in gold, silver and precious stones and ruled by powerful and majestic Black women. A noteworthy section of the novel reads, There ruled on an island called California a queen great of body, very beautiful for her race, at a flourishing age, desirous in her thoughts of achieving great things, valiant in strength, cunning in her brave heart, more than any other who had ruled that kingdom before her--Queen Calafia.
Queen Califa's Magical Circle
Niki de Saint Phalle's Queen Califia's Magical Circle -- is the only American sculpture garden and the last major international project created by Sculptress Niki de Saint Phalle (born France, 1930-2002). Inspired by California's mythic, historic and cultural roots, the garden consists of nine large-scale sculptures, a circular snake wall and maze entryway, sculpturally integrated bench seating, and native shrubs and trees planted within the interior plaza and along the outer perimeter. The garden bears the brilliant, unique mosaic ornamentation that is an unmistakable part of Saint Phalle's later work.
Queen Califia's Magical Circle is situated within a 12-acre natural habitat in the Iris Sankey Arboretum in Kit Carson Park on a parcel of land donated by the City of Escondido. The park's entrance is located five minutes from I-15 (Via Rancho Parkway Exit) at the corner of Bear Valley Parkway and Mary Lane.
The sculpture garden's key architectural features are an undulating circular wall measuring 400 feet in length (with varying heights from 4 to 9 feet) that surrounds the garden. Monumental playful serpents, decorated in colorfully patterned mosaics, slither along the top of the wall, their curved bodies forming a pattern of solids and voids that allows visitors to see landscape vistas beyond the garden. The snake wall opens into a maze whose walls and floors are covered with black, white, and mirrored tiles. Once through the maze, visitors enter into the central courtyard.
There are nine freestanding sculptures in the garden. The imposing mosaic sculpture of Queen Califia standing on the back of a five-legged eagle commands the center of the garden. Eight large totemic sculptures surround Queen Califia. They are covered with symbols and forms freely drawn from Native American, Pre-Columbian, and Mexican art as well as the artist's own fantastic imagery. See video also on RonsMusicBox.com blog.

California, the land of the ever-living #MuurishEmpressCalafia/Califia. Calafia was the title of each empress. California was her land. She was known to be black of skin, of the muurish nationality, and ruled over Islands and Islands of black people, from California, Baja, to Hawaii.
A #muurishIsland, ruled by women. It was first mentioned in the records of the western European christians in the seventh century, and retold “The #SeongofRoland” where a passing mention of a place called #Califerne, was made perhaps because it was the caliph’s domain. See (Putnam, Ruth (1917). Herbert Ingram Priestley. ed. California: the name. Berkeley: University of California)
#Spanishconquistadors told stories about a mystical #blackmuurishqueen that ruled a State of California, situated in the same location as the present day California. The modern state of State California continues the legacy and the memory of this great black Queendom and its Queens.
(#Califia, Queen of California painting by #ArthurWright)
The Muurs and Calafia
#Khalifa means God’s ruler (in Muurish Arabic).
The #storyofCalafia was later re-narrated in the book The Adventures of #Esplandián, a book written in 1500, probably based on stories gleaned from the old Muurish seamen of Spain, Portugal, Holland, Belgium and England.
Calafia is introduced as “… a #regalMuurishblackwoman, courageous, #strongoflimb and large in person, full in the bloom of womanhood, the most beautiful of a long line of queens who ruled over the mythical realm of California.”
She supposedly commanded a fleet of ships with which she ruled and maintained peace in the surrounding lands, and islands including Baja and Hawaii. She reportedly kept an aerial defense force of “#griffins”, and other fabulous animals which were native to California, trained to defend the land against invanders.
She was so powerful she could project her imperial power over the seas of the mediteranean at will. The #Esplandian narrates that Calafia maintained cultural and trading contacts with the Muurs of Africa. It told of her wars in the mediterranean seas, in Anatolia, the #Byzantineempire and in southern Europe.

Art installation | The Circle of Time | Phil Akashi
ARTIST: Phil Akashi
INSTALLATION: “The Circle of Time” (2016)
MEDIUM: Ink on fine art paper, bamboo, hemp rope, leather, and metal
SIZE: 4 x 4 x 3,35 m (base x depth x height)
The installation “The Circle of Time” (2016) is part of the Yin Yang Handover series (2013, ongoing) in which Phil Akashi investigates the politics of power and democracy. Using a metaphor to compare the handover of Hong Kong to China with one of the hallmarks of the traditional Chinese philosophy, the theory of the Five Elements* (五行), Phil Akashi engages the viewers in a meditative experience about the global crisis of democracy.
The heart of the installation is a traditional Chinese circle fan representing the harmonious and gradual integration of Hong Kong with the motherland. The fan is composed of five hundred thousand seal imprints with Chinese characters relative to the five seasons of the Five Elements*. In his own language, the artist observes and tries to understand how a “one country, two systems” should become a “one country, one system”, in a cyclic and harmonious transition, just as one season transitions into the next.
By hanging an empty bamboo sandglass representing 50 years of time, tied with BDSM leather and rope, on top of the circle fan, the artist infuses a sense of fragility and ephemerality to the political promises, creating a poetic and symbolic sense of emptiness. Since the British handover in 1997, the constitutional principle formulated by Deng Xiaoping, ”One country, two systems guarantees that Hong Kong's economic and political systems will not be changed for 50 years. For many observers, the reality is far more uncertain as the due date of 2047 seems to come ahead of schedule.
By presenting this poetic yet provocative installation, I hope to both challenge the fragile state of democracy in the world as well as to bring awareness about the importance of freedom of speech and active participation, as citizens, in politics and civic life.” Phil Akashi
* The Five Elements, which are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal, represent the tangible activities of Yin and Yang as manifested in the cyclic changes of nature, which regulate life on earth. These elements correspond to energy, also known as Qi (气) in each season. Water dominates in winter (冬) and nourishes plants and trees (wood) in spring (春); wood makes fire in summer (夏) which burns into ashes to form earth in late summer (中); late summer is the fifth season and is seen as a transitional time (中); earth is the source of metal in autumn (秋); metal can be melted into liquid or condensed to water. This is the cyclic and natural order.
