Vladimir Putin's highs and lows of 2014 - in 60 seconds
It has been a year of contrasts for Russia's 'Man of the Year' Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been named the nation's Man of the Year for the 15th time - but while his popularity holds strong at home, it has been in freefall overseas.
The year started with Russia's triumphant performance at the Winter Olympics, hosted at a cost of billions of dollars in Sochi, where Russia topped the medal table.
But the celebrations did not last long. Shortly after, the pro-Moscow regime in neighbouring Ukraine collapsed, dividing the country and prompting Mr Putin to annex Crimea from the country in March. His action marked the first growth of Russia’s dominions since the fall of the Soviet Union - a popular move at home but one that saw him expelled from the G8 group of nations.
International relations worsened after Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, an act widely blamed on pro-Russian militias. Nearly 300 people - dozens of them children - were killed.
In November, the West brought in further international sanctions against Russia at a G20 summit.
A sharp drop in the price of oil - the country’s most valuable assets - has caused inflation to spike. The rouble has lost 50 per cent of its value against the dollar since the start of the year.

A memorial service for the Russian stage actor and director Yuri Lyubimov was held at the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow on Wednesday. Large queues formed as the theatre world gathered to pay their respects to the late and famed director.
Lyubimov was best known for his association with the famous Taganka Theatre which he helped found. Some of his most successful productions were 'Hamlet' and his 1977 adaptation of the once banned novel 'The Master and the Margarita.'
Lyubimov suffered heart-failure and was admitted to the Botkin Clinic in the Russian capital where he died at the age of 97 on Sunday.

UK: Scottish court to rule on bid to stop Johnson's new Brexit deal
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
A legal bid to stop UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson from passing his proposed Brexit agreement will be decided on Friday by a judge at Scotland highest civil court in Edimburgh.
Campaigner Jo Maugham QC hoped the Court of Session would suspend the deal between the EU and the UK as it will result in Northern Ireland becoming part of a separate customs territory to the rest of the country.
We will watch what happens going forward and if the Government's actions are not consistent with the constitution then, you know, we may take further action, said Maugham, who lodged the petition at the court on Thursday and who believes the new agreement contravenes a current law stipulating it is unlawful for Her Majesty's Government to enter into arrangements under which Northern Ireland forms part of a separate customs territory to Great Britain.
On Thursday, the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced that a deal on Brexit had been reached with Johnson. Now both the UK and the European Parliament need to vote on the deal for it to go in force.
Whether Johnson has the votes required for the deal to be approved is uncertain, as his government lacks a majority in the House of Commons and with the Democratic Unionist Party, which is in a confidence-and-supply agreement with Johnson's Conservatives, refusing to back the deal.
