Olds Transportation Museum. And finally we ended our day with Impression 5 Science Center for some hands-on science.

CONTRARY to the prediction of many prominent people in the bicycle trade, Madison Square Garden was, last evening, again thrown open to the public with a most cordial invitation to come and witness the grandest show, both of bicycles and automobiles, that has ever been held in this and perhaps in any other country.

On October 30, 1900 the first modern automotive show opens at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This was neither the first auto show in the United States nor the first at Madison Square Garden, but it was the beginning of car shows as we know them today. It was a week long event sponsored by the newly formed Automobile Club of America. The price of admission to the show was 50¢. Thirty-one vehicles were exhibited by sixty-six exhibitors. Among them were Ford, King, Winton, Olds, Daimler, McKay, Chrysler, Riker, and the long forgotten Werton. Included in the exhibition space were accessories and working displays which showed acceleration and braking, as well as a ramp to show hill climbing abilities. Many of the cars at the show were electric or steam powered. Gas fueled vehicles would have to wait until 1901 when new oil fields in Texas would make liquid fuel affordable.
Ransom Eli Olds was the first to operate assembly line production of an automobile called the ''Runabout.'' Between 1897 and 1901 the Olds Motor Company of Lansing, Michigan produced 425 automobiles. Between 1901 and 1907 the Runabout, also known as the ''Curved Dash'' sold for $650. Oldsmobile was sold to General Motors in 1908.

It is mostly in Ingham County, although portions of the city extend west into Eaton County and north into Clinton County. The 2010 Census placed the city's population at 114,297,[7] making it the fifth largest city in Michigan. The Lansing Metropolitan Area, colloquially referred to as Mid-Michigan, is an important center for educational, cultural, governmental, commercial, and industrial functions. The area is home to two medical schools, one veterinary school, two nursing schools, two law schools—including Western Michigan University Cooley Law School and Michigan State University College of Law, a Big Ten Conference university - (Michigan State University), the Michigan State Capitol, the state Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, a federal court, the Library of Michigan and Historical Center, and headquarters of four national insurance companies.
Lansing is the only U.S. state capital (among the 47 located in counties) that is not also a county seat. The seat of government of Ingham County is Mason,[8] but the county maintains some offices in LansingFarmers' markets[edit]

Lansing has several farmers' markets throughout the city in the summer months. These markets include the Allen Street Farmer's Market[95] on the city's eastside, the Westside Farmers' Market, the Old Town Farmer's Market, the South Lansing Farmer's Market,[96] and the year-round historic Lansing City Market[48] located near downtown. The Lansing City Market has built a brand new $1.6 million facility on the riverfront in downtown Lansing where it will continue its year round operations providing specialty items in addition to regular groceries from over 30 vendors.
Libraries[edit]
The Library of Michigan and Historical Center is a highly regarded state library and research center. The library is one of the top five genealogical research facilities in the United States. The Capital Area District Library has 13 branches within Ingham County, some of these include: The Main library downtown, the Foster Library on the east side, and the South Lansing Library on the south side.
Lansing Art Gallery[edit]
The Lansing Art Gallery, founded in 1965, is Lansing's oldest art gallery and a non-profit membership organization. Showcasing the works of Michigan artists, the gallery is committed to providing cultural enhancement opportunities for Michigan residents. The museum is open to the public with free admission.

The Impression 5 Science Center[97] is a children's science center located in a historic wagon works factory on the Grand River.
The Michigan Library and Historical Center contains one of the 10 largest genealogy collections in the nation, has a museum dedicated to Michigan's history among other attractions.[98]
The Michigan Women's Hall of Fame is a museum dedicated to the historical accomplishments and achievements of Michigan women. The house is located directly south of downtown in the 1903-built Cooley-Haze House. The museum is surrounded by Cooley Gardens.[99]
The R. E. Olds Transportation Museum is dedicated to the education of Lansing's role in the development of transportation, particularly the automobile.
The Turner-Dodge House[100] is a museum dedicated to Lansing's early pioneers. The museum sits in the Classical Revival-styled Turner-Dodge Mansion, built in 1858 for James and Marion Turner, and later by their daughter and her husband. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Theatre[edit]
The Riverwalk Theatre,[101] (formerly the Okemos Barn Theatre), the Lansing Civic Players,[102] and the now defunct BoarsHead Theater[103] are or were all located in downtown.
Peppermint Creek Theatre Company[104] is a well established new award-winning theater company.
Happendance, Michigan's longest-running professional modern dance company, has been based in Greater Lansing since 1976.[105]
The Greater Lansing Ballet Company is an award-winning ballet and dance company.
The Creole Gallery[106] brings in various musicians and hosts the Icarus Falling Theater group.

Oldsmobile was a brand of American automobile produced for most of its existence by General Motors. It was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In its 107-year history, it produced 35.2 million cars, including at least 14 million built at its Lansing, Michigan factory. When it was phased out in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler and Peugeot. The closing of the Oldsmobile division presaged a larger consolidation of GM brands and discontinuation of models during the company's 2009 bankruptcy reorganization.
Oldsmobiles were first manufactured by the Olds Motor Works in Lansing, Michigan, a company founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In 1901, the company produced 425 cars, making it the first high-volume gasoline-powered automobile manufacturer. Oldsmobile became the top selling car company in the United States for a few years. Ransom Olds left the company in financial difficulties and formed the REO Motor Car Company. The last Curved Dash Oldsmobile was made in 1907. General Motors purchased the company in 1908.
The 1901 to 1904 Oldsmobile Curved Dash was the first mass-produced car[citation needed], made from the first automotive assembly line, an invention that is often miscredited to Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. (Ford was the first to manufacture cars on a moving assembly line.) After Olds sold the company in 1899, it was renamed Olds Motor Works and moved to a new plant in Detroit. By March 1901, the company had a whole line of models ready for mass production. Unfortunately, a mistake by a worker caused the factory to catch fire, and it burned to the ground, with all of the prototypes destroyed. The only car that survived the fire was a Curved Dash prototype, which was wheeled out of the factory by two workers while escaping the fire. A new factory was built, and production of the Curved Dash commenced.
Officially, the cars were called Oldsmobile automobiles, colloquially referred to as Oldsmobiles. It was this moniker, as applied especially to the Oldsmobile Curved Dash, that was popularized in the lyrics and title of the 1905 hit song In My Merry Oldsmobile.
The 1910 Limited Touring was a high point for the company. Riding atop 42-inch wheels, and equipped with factory white tires, the Limited was the prestige model in Oldsmobile's two model lineup. The Limited retailed for US$4,600, an amount greater than the purchase of a new, no-frills three bedroom house. Buyers received goatskin upholstery, a 60 hp (45 kW) 707 CID (11.6 L) straight-6 engine, Bosch Magneto starter, running boards and room for five. Options included a speedometer, clock, and a full glass windshield. A limousine version was priced at $5,800. While Oldsmobile only sold 725 Limiteds in its three years of production, the car is best remembered for winning a race against the famed 20th Century Limited train, an event immortalized in the painting Setting the Pace by William Hardner Foster. In 1926, the Oldsmobile Six came in 5 body styles.
In 1929, as part of General Motors' companion make program, Oldsmobile introduced the higher standard Viking brand, marketed through the Oldsmobile dealers network. Viking was discontinued already at the end of the 1930 model year although an additional 353 cars were marketed as 1931 models.
In 1937, Oldsmobile was a pioneer in introducing a four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the Automatic Safety Transmission, although this accessory was actually built by Buick, which would offer it in its own cars in 1938. This transmission featured a conventional clutch pedal, which the driver pressed before selecting either low or high range. In low, the car shifted between first and second gears. In high, the car shifted between first, third and fourth gears...

Funny Turkey in the Road - Everyday this turkey comes out from the nearby nature center and stands in the middle of the road stopping traffic. When a car moves, the turkey runs to stand in front of it to stop you. For weeks authorities have tried to remove this turkey from the area - but she escapes them every time.

Lansing Neighborhoods: REO Town
REO Town is an up and coming neighborhood located just South of Downtown Lansing on Washington Avenue. It is easily marked by the large, artistic letters and gears that spell out the area's name.
Art galleries, diners and numerous small businesses are nestled within this tight-knit community. With its easy access to Lansing's River Trail, you can easily find yourself walking or biking to nearby Potter Park Zoo or Impression 5 with your family. The REO Motor Car Company was a Lansing, Michigan-based company that produced automobiles and trucks from 1905 to 1975. At one point the company also manufactured buses on its truck platforms.
Ransom E. Olds was an entrepreneur who founded multiple companies in the automobile industry. In 1897 Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company, makers of Oldsmobile (later to become a part of General Motors). In 1905 Olds left Oldsmobile and established a new company, REO Motor Car Company, in Lansing, Michigan. Olds had 52 percent of the stock and the titles of president and general manager. To ensure a reliable supply of parts, he organized a number of subsidiary firms like the National Coil Company, the Michigan Screw Company, and the Atlas Drop Forge Company.
Originally the company was to be called R. E. Olds Motor Car Company, but the owner of Olds' previous company, then called Olds Motor Works, objected and threatened legal action on the grounds of likely confusion of names by consumers.
Olds then changed the name to his initials. Olds Motor Works soon adopted the popular name of its vehicles, Oldsmobile (which, along with Buick and Cadillac, became a founding division of General Motors Corporation).
The company's name was spelled alternately in all capitals REO or with only an initial capital as Reo, and the company's own literature was inconsistent in this regard, with early advertising using all capitals and later advertising using the Reo capitalization. The pronunciation, however, was as a single word. Lansing is home to the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum.
