ANZAC Day Observed In Rabaul
While Anzac Day is being observed all over the word, in the volcanic town of Rabaul, the occasion recalled some of the worst military defeats of the allied forces.
At the Rabaul Cenotaph, a dawn service was held this morning to commemorate the day.
And to celebrate the existence of Rabaul town, a former Japanese military base that dictated the course of the second world war fought on Papua New Guinea's soil.

This morning, the Australian Prime Minister was given an elaborate tour of the Bomana War Cemetery, ahead of commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the Kokoda Trail World War II campaign.

Japanese prisoners arrive at Rabaul
Under the supervision of Provost Marshal, NX77304 (N5002) Colonel Keith Charles Fleming Harris, Land Headquarters, the first batch of Japanese war criminals were placed in the POW compound at Rabaul. The prisoners were searched prior to entering the compound and all medical supplies and bandages together with knives, scissors, cord, etc confiscated.
Solider Dies and Properties Destroyed
One PNG Defence Force soldier is dead; another is in a stable condition while the other two are in Military Police Custody.
Initial police reports suggest that the soldiers were assaulted after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a resident at Port Moresby’s Hohola suburban.

Silent Warriors: When Waer Threatened Australia
In Papua New Guinea and the Solomons there are many sunken WWII ships, Japanese and Allied, that are stark reminders of how close war came to Australia. Ben Cropp visits the location of these shipwrecks; his underwater HD camera glides over the deadly cargo they carried. The ammunition and guns that now litter their silent decks, provide new habitation for schools of tropical fish.
The jungle also shrouds the relics of war. You can stumble on a crashed plane with dense foliage hiding it from sight, or a gun emplacement covered in jungle growth. Sixty years of time stands still, each relic a memorial, a museum housed in a jungle, a hidden reminder of the threat on Australias doorstep.

Dumping of Japanese ammunition in Blanche Bay, Rabaul
Japanese troops, under the direction of Australian forces, dump ammunition into Blanche Bay in accordance with the surrender terms. Film shows hand grenades, 4.5 shells, one hundred pound bombs and .303 ammo being dumped. Japanese barges were used for the dumping.
