Stolac and Radimlja Necropolis in Bosnia & Herzegovina

In this episode we visit Stolac, one of the oldest inhabited areas in the Balkans, dating back to 12,000 B.C.. The main attraction is the old fortified town of Stari Grad with the castle ruins. These lands were once owned by Queen Katerina of Bosnia, later her son Herzeg inherited the land and built this castle. Stolac is in the heart of Herzegovina, which in translation means the land of Herzeg.
On the way from Mostar to Stolac is a medieval necropolis called Radimlja. Throughout the country you can find over 60,000 medieval tombstones and with some dating back to the 12 century. The tombstones at Radimlja date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Each tombstone depicts the vocation of each person, whether it was a warrior, farmer or noble. The tombstones at Radimlja have all been restored. They now resemble how they originally looked.

Radimlja is a stećak necropolis located near Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in Vidovo polje, 3 km west of Stolac, on the Čapljina-Stolac road. The Radimlja necropolis is one of the most valuable monuments of the mediaeval period in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Currently the necropolis numbers 133 stećci. When the Čapljina-Stolac road was built during the Austro-Hungarian period in 1882, it ran through the necropolis and destroyed at least 15-20 tombstones in the process. Out of nine type of stećci, there 36 slab, 1 slab with pedestal, 27 chest, 24 chest with pedestal, 4 tall chest, 5 tall chest with pedestal, 2 sarcophagus (i.e. ridge/gable), 31 sarcophagus with pedestal, and 3 of cruciform.
The core of the necropolis was built in the end of the 14th century, when were made three big chests, of which two are richly decorated with motifs in bas relief. The next phase include simple chests (sanduk) and ridges (sljemenaci) with flower crosses on the front and borders acanthus leaves. The last phase with circa 20 separate stećci of high quality and diverse forms indicates to be cemetery of Miloradović-Stjepanović family, attested in epitaphs on five tombstones.
Due to several Illyrian burial mounds near the necropolis it seems the location was used from earlier times as resting place for the dead, and the population of Batnoge continued this ancient tradition. During the 1960s excavation, on the depth of 120–135 cm were found nine graves, indicating that were destroyed up to 50 specimens. Analysis of the bodies showed the people were of high growth with well-developed thorax.

There are almost 60 000 tombstones (megaliths) like these in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Less than 10% of them all have reliefs, like the ones in this video, which are in Radimlja 3 km near Stolac. Many of them are located on high altitudes and in forests.

Necropolis Radimlja is one of the most valuable monuments of medieval time in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is situated in the Vidovo polje (field), 3 kilometres west from Stolac. It was put on a list of imperilled monuments. There are 133 standing thumb stones of which 63 are decorated with different ornaments, the most often in the shape of stylized crosses. The most standing thumb-stones come from 15th and 16th century. Among all motives, probably the most famous one is the shape of man′ s figure with raised arm.

Under One Roof
Staff and students describe life at ethnically segregated Bosnian school.
This film depicts life at the Stolac High School in Bosnia and Hercegovina, where Croat and Bosniak students are taught separately, the former attending class in the morning and the latter in the afternoon.
The international community introduced the two schools under one roof system a decade ago to encourage children to attend schools in areas where their ethnic group was a minority.
In April 2012, however, the municipal court in the southern Bosnian city of Mostar ruled that the practice at schools in the towns of Stolac and Capljina was discriminatory, and ordered them to merge their classes by September.
In this film, Nadina Pirija describes how she and fellow-students of both ethnicities have learned to work around the system.
They forced [the system] on us a long time ago, but we socialise with each other regardless, she says.
Despite the system, pupils of both ethnicities work together on a school newspaper and council, while others play together in a brass band, student Nives Raguz said.
I really think the situation is improving, that more and more projects are being implemented to improve the situation and to have Bosniaks and Croats socialise as much as possible, Raguz said.
